Apparently there is change in the wind. CoachWayne Hunter appears to have replaced Coach Plank.

Well go to the official site and you will see Plank is no longer on it. My guess is Portland. Also if you are on Twitter then see who the Coach is that is now following most WSU players, coaches, etc. Then you can google Caoch Hunter and see the connection to UCR, St. Marys which is all part of the Smith Tree.

On the Official site look at 20 and then 21 to see where Plank disappears.

I thought I heard Plank went to USF. Could be wrong though and no idea why he decided to leave.

So, are we at consensus that this is unrelated to recruiting this year. I realize it may be a reach, but wondering if it has anything to do with scholarship management this recruiting cycle??

As anticipated Coach Hunter tweets this morning that he has left UCR and is coming to the Cougs.

From UCR site.

Coach Wayne Hunter was UCR Director of Basketball Operations in 2019-20 season and was elevated to assistant coach for the 2020-21 year. Hunter, a former standout at Saint Mary's College. Served as the California recruiter.

Hunter played four seasons in Moraga and led the Gaels to two NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen his senior year following an upset of Villanova.

A native of Sacramento, Hunter played in 96 games at SMC and averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as a senior. After graduating with a degree in communications in 2010, he spent a year as the head JV coach and varsity assistant at Richmond High School, He then went on spend two years as the JV head coach and varsity assistant at Oakland Technical High School. Hunter then became the Head Varsity Basketball Coach in 2016 at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif..

Hunter dabbled in professional basketball from 2012-2014, with the likes of former Saint Mary’s teammate Diamon Simpson in various professional training camps. From 2015-2019 he coached and co-directed the West Coast Elite Basketball program based out of Northern California. Hunter coached a fifth ranked (Under Armour) West Coast Elite 16UAA team in the Spring of 2019, their best ranking in program history.

This is what I remember as well. He left to be an assistant at USF. It makes sense. The head coach is a former assistant of Coach Smith at USF. So, if Plank wanted to get back on court, going to USF is a good move.

So, Hunter played at Saint Mary's when Coach Smith was an assistant. They know each other well then. So far Smith has been good at hiring coaches at WSU. So, unless he proves otherwise, this is probably going to be fine and he will do a good job.
