New strength coach

Like his background. Played OL at Boise State on Chris Peterson's best teams. Coached at LSU and Pitt before landing the S&C gig at Akron. Looks like he was also at Wyoming for a season, so perhaps that where Dickert crossed paths with him.

Time will tell, but looks like our type of guy. Likes rural jobs.

I listened to a Yogi Roth podcast yesterday where he interviewed Chris Peterson. Coach made a point that everyone is focused on strength coaches, and that this focus is a bit misplaced. Peterson said schools should start focusing on performance psychologists. Too many kids have shitty parents/coaches who promise them that their football experience will go a certain way (i.e. you'll be the star.... because, well your my little boy and all the coaches have been whispering in you ear since you were 8 that you are the best). We all know the parent: "I can't wait for little Johnny to get 'us' into the league!" When that inevitably doesn't work out the kid bails to a greener pasture. Peterson insists everyone's college football experience is not going to be what they expected. The players that thrive are resilient and mature enough to understand that you need to keep grinding, trust your coaches, and the process. We need at least 50 "resilient" players like Jackson, Stone, Pole, Gomness, Victor, Fa'amo, Hicks, Edson, and Watson. Can Dickert get talented player and turn them into resilient players? Anybody can grind in the weight room. That's only the half the battle. How many can grind mentally without wandering eyes because some salesman from a bigger school is promising them the world. Time to hire a psychologist, Coach Dickert. We need an outside the box coach!

This dude has a good coaching resume. He had a long run at LSU, and they don't hire chumps. He earned his Master's degree in Kinesiology. Look at the programs and coaches he's worked for. Hell, you can argue his background is stronger than Dickert's, which is a good sign.

Well.... that used to be the coach's job.

I suppose that with most coaches gone before a single 4 year recruiting cycle it's hard to speak with any authority from that position.

I remember well what the O line kids at BSU looked like during their best years. He knows first hand what it is to buy in and put in the time and effort.

I'm not convinced about this. I think it gets back to the basic character of the players you recruit.

It also requires good communication from the beginning to the recruits about the reality they will face.

Set expectations early. Bring in kids with solid character.
