I just can't get my arms around it. $25, $50 million a year? How the F does that pencil out? I mean F, we have homeless people, we have the federal minimum wage at $7.25 (hello Idaho), but we pay these guys millions and millions of dollars? How the F do they afford it?

I rarely watch MLB, even though I'm an old BB pitcher. Never watch the NBA. Watch pro FB when they get to the playoffs. So where do they get all this money? Baffles me.

Two things. 1. Supply and demand. You can only put 5, 9, 11 guys on the court/field. There’s a limited supply of Lebrons, Mahomes and Shohei’s. Simple supply and demand of labor. That’s why RBs get F’d. Relative to their counterparts playing other positions there’s an abundance of good ones. Where do the best athletes in peewee football-HS play? RB. That’s why some UFA from Missouri State can come in and run for 1K yards, and why the giants won’t pay Saquon $20M.

2nd thing. You think these players are making good money (they are) go look at the P&Ls of the shittiest franchises in these sports. Owners are PRINTING money for doing nothing. The Washington Commanders have arguably been one of the worst franchises in sports over the last decade. They just sold for the largest amount of any US sports franchise. Ever. $6B. Snyder who was horrible like 7 X’d his investment in 15 years.

Add those two things up, most of these players earn every penny. Some of them are underpaid.

Added to post. Had no idea hockey players were making this kind of scratch though!! 👀

I don’t think it’s the cash they are generating that’s creating the value for the franchises. It’s the fact there are a limited number of the in the world and more and more billionaires that want one. I consider them a piece of art or a rare car collection they own and can show off to their billionaire buddies.

For sure. If you could go start a franchise and enter the league with enough money the teams would be worth a lot less. While most of these leagues and franchises do print money, the return on investment is mostly tied up in the value of the franchise itself. Some MLB franchises are in the red operationally, but their franchise values still go up exponentially.

Here are some things that contribute to the problem:
1. Cities, counties, states, etc contributing to the building of stadiums and arenas. Thus taxpayers subsidize.
2. Businesses are able to write off entertaining their clients and employees. Thus taxpayers subsidize.
3. Sports fans unable to control themselves and paying outrageous prices for tickets, jerseys, hats, shirts, beer as well as watching way too many sports competitions on TV/streaming. Give the owners your money and they will spend it on their play toy (franchise).

That’s a shit ton of oil! If you have a rig that gets less than 10 m/gal you should get a free Mbappe jersey!
Unf-ing believable. For Soccer. I absolutely have no interest in soccer. Bunch of guys running up and down the field chasing a ball. Boring.

Now the Cougar women I would watch. For a reason unrelated to the game itself. :)

I've never understood complaints over player salaries. Complaining about how many millions players are making off of billionaire owners is lame. Our spending on sports (as a society) isn't sustainable over the long term, but if we are going to throw billions (and billions) at entertainment I'd much rather the athletes get compensated for the revenues they generate.

Simply put. If you or I can do something at a level that only a handful of people in the world can do AND collectively that creates $billions in profits and/or increased business value…we’re commanding and making 10s of millions as well.

Item #3 is the biggest problem. I was talking to a friend who went to the MLB All Star game and he said authentic jerseys were over $300. They are probably actually worth $50 if not for the name on them.

In terms of supporting their teams, it is nauseating to see the money that people will pay to watch some teams. My wife is a lifelong KU fan, but we've never watched a Big 12 conference game in Allen Fieldhouse because I'm not willing to spend $300 per ticket to go.

NBA, MLB and NFL are even dumber.
