As the charter member of the JDL fan club, I want to provide his doubters with a space to seek penance. :)

This kid is electric, and the best part is he’s just starting his ascent. Did he make even the slightest mistake or ill advised decision last night? He read exactly what UW was trying to do early by dropping into coverage and contesting the middle routes, so he dissected them with our outside WRs. Then he started pulling the ball and running with it occasionally, and man, it was lights out from there.

The most encouraging moment though happened early on when he rolled left to the pylon in an almost identical situation to where he fumbled against Oregon. This time though, he not only didn’t reach the ball, but he tucked it. It showed me that not only did the coaches work with him on it, but more importantly, that he’s coachable and humble enough to listen to them.

I want my #4 jersey NOW! In Crimson, Anthracite, and White.

Great post.

And Leach gets credit. He wouldn't be here if it wasn't for CML, and almost all of our roster.

I don't regret calling out JDL as terrible in the OSU game. I figure my criticism was exactly the catalyst that he needed to quit sucking. ;p

In all seriousness, JDL is everything that is great about college football. He's got mediocre mechanics, he's too small and he makes terrible throws at times. Despite his limitations, he's a total baller who puts it all on the line and holds nothing back. You can tell his teammates love him and as mentioned above, he knows that he's a work in progress and he's working hard to be better and learn from his mistakes.

I'm looking forward to see him continue to grow as a QB and a leader for our team.

Oh Father Patrol for I have sinned…. Say five hail JDL’s and all is forgiven.

They needed someone like JDL for this game. The moment wasn’t too big. Just a kid who went outside with friends to play a game .

What I perceive as his shortcomings were not exposed this year, and that his flare, his infection among the players carried the day and the season . While some people bailed on this team, mostly adults, a 19 year old kid stood up and said not me I am in.

But i will never admit I was wrong 😜

Jayden got a lot better as the season went on. I'm not sure if it was a case of getting on the same page as his receivers or if he made some minor mechanical adjustments but the accuracy improved. He made much better decisions as the season wore on. And he's always been a gamer.

I figured the offense had enough talent that a game manager type who wouldn't screw things up would be best. But Jayden elevated the play of his teammates like Gesser or Minshew. Glad to see the team playing well.

Everything you say is true, but his swagger/ emotion is also his biggest liability. We've seen him play when he didn't have his BD energy going and it is not pretty.

He played well last night. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty wasn’t his best move, but I give him a pass because he was having fun and he waited until the game was pretty well in the bag.

Criticisms of him earlier in the season were valid. He still doesn’t respond well when pressured consistently, or when trailing. We saw that just 2 weeks ago at Oregon. He’s played really well against teams that can’t get to him - which we’ve seen the last 2 weeks.

There’s no doubt that he’s our guy next year. But Before he makes the list of the greats, he needs to be able to make good decisions under pressure, and avoid mistakes when we’re behind.

Im not apologizing for shit. He played poorly at times. He played well at times. His accuracy is still an issue. He threw balls last night that were bad. He threw some that were good too.

What I didn’t see a lot of last night was bad decisions to throw into bad spots. Not many throws into double coverage. Not throwing balls up for grabs down field. I didnt see much of the turn head and spin out of the pass rush.

He played much better. The game was called much better too.

Also, he has work to do. It’s a 7-5 team. It isn’t a 11-1 team. He isn’t above criticism. There is plenty to improve on.

Having one less cook in the kitchen paid off. I know Smith got a bad rap early, but it was unclear as to who doing what. The play calling for the majority of the game made a great of sense and alleviated a great number of earlier mistakes. Maybe there should be a Smith apology thread or maybe a Rogers thread. Rogers used to catch hell by some posters.😌

He's obviously not perfect, but he's learning how to refine his game to maximize his abilities, as are the coaches. We don't need him to become a pure pocket passer who clicks through 4 reads like Tom Brady, but he needs to be on time with his throws and make good decisions. That's what he did a great job with last night. Drop back, set your feet and fire. When he does that, he's very accurate and his arm strength is outstanding. If the first 2 reads aren't there, pull the ball and go. What he didn't do, and what got him in trouble in some previous games, was drift in the pocket and throw late downfield.

I hope he keeps maturing on and off the field, because he's super fun to watch. He energizes the entire program. He's also the kind of person who can be a huge recruiting tool. Get someone like Biggs on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal who says "who are you gonna play for, a program with an old geezer coaching staff and a QB who sucks, or our young coaching staff and the best QB in the P12? We run the ball, we pass the ball, we do it all." :)

It would be a better pitch than that.

I was thinking the same thing last night. I like the way Smith has been calling plays over the past several weeks. I also love the way he called out Jimmy Lake on social media. Dude deserves a bonus for that alone.

Brian Smith calls out Lake

JDL is a young QB and he was going to make mistakes along the way.
Question was : when would he have his "IT GAME", when he puts things together both in his ability to throw and run; and his ability to stick to a game plan and execute.
Well it appears to have happened last night.
No silly throws with a high chance to get picked off
Not taking sacks after standing in the pocket too long
Pin point passes seemed to be the norm
Running a few times - just enough to keep the defense honest.

If last night was the real JDL, then WOW.

His motion seemed to be improved as well.

I did. It’s amazing what happens to a defense that drops 8 when you run the ball. Also, it’s amazing what happens when Max gets 20+ carries.
You have to admit there were a few runs including the TD simply by uw’s alignment it meant at least a ten yard gain. It reminded me when we played air force. We were going to give up 19 yards by alignment alone

Yes.

I have been critical of him, he had been inconsistent in his accuracy, forces throws, and at times makes bad decisions, last night was different. Hopefully the Apple Cup was a turning point for JDL, last night was by far his best game up to this point in his college career. His accuracy, decision making was almost flawless. He had a lot of time so needless to say that helps, and he didn’t throw deep, simply took what the defense gave him, he showed patience and maturity we have seen up to this point. Smith called a great game had the UW off balance the whole game. He showed a lot of maturity after the Rolo dismissal,Also I have to think that Dan Morrison coming on board with the regime change has help. He seems to have improved more quickly in the past 5 games, than in his first 7. Some is experience, but it appears to me Morrison has had a positive influence on his development. One thing I give JDL a lot of credit for is the kid is leader, and a baller, and I am happy as hell he’s a Coug

A question I want to throw out, not JDL related, but don't want to start a new thread.

Do you think both Rolovich and Lake were at home watching our game? You wonder if they would watch it....kind of a curious....but if you had to guess, do you think they watched the game?

No to both.

I hope that they met up in Moses Lake for their own version of the Apple Cup. A wrestling match in the I-90 median. And nobody even stops to watch.

Kind of OT, but it feels like almost 3 seasons ago that Guarantano was named the starter. What a roller coaster of a season.
Tennessee fans were right, Guarantano was f'ing terrible. Shocker, no idea what Rolo was thinking.

Crapping your pants in big events doesn't show up in the stats or on CNN apparently
5 star coach killers often kill coaches by shining in practice when stuff is routine and scripted. It's only when the game is live that you see what you have. At least we had another option. That Tennessee didn't is their problem

I don’t know that he even could have stood in the pocket too long. UWs DL got no pressure whatsoever. Quite shocking to see after years of Danny Sheltons & Vita Veas.

I fondly recall the prediction that de Laura would never go 7 for 10....

It's also amazing to see what happens when there is no Shelton, Qualls, Vea or Levi what's his name.

Agreed, but I was also thinking of previous games where the pocket started to collapse and he didn't make the right decision. He seemed to be vary aware of how much time he had and used it to the maximum.
