On Abe Lucas

A third round selection last year, Abe has started all but last week's game this year. In mid-October I read that in 186 snaps he had only one sack.

So today I elected to key on him in today's Seahawk game, running plays over again to spotlight his play.

Run blocking -- did an effective job throughtout the afternoon. On the few trap plays he was successful. Surprisngly only ran his holes once today, and that was at the end of the game for a beauty that kept them in it. He didn't move any defenders, but neutralized them. I did not see a play where he was tasked with sealing linebackers. I also didn't see a wide split or a pull so can't evaluate those.

Pass blocking -- competant quickness; not overpowered or beaten the entire game. Held his ground well and not once did anyone get around him. Strong enough not to be moved around or driven back. He was quick and agile enough to succesfuly pull off 45 degree sets, and was not defeated in his vertical sets. Zero pressures and and zero sacks.

He held his blocks. Only saw one hold. Not penalized in this game.

I can't comment on techniques as I don't know enough about those criteria.

No way to know how he graded today, but he looked like he belonged as a starter.

You don’t appreciate how big Abe is until you see him up close. I sat behind the WSU sideline when they played Houston and that guy is enormous. I remember when WSU recruited him, he looked pretty skinny.

It is interesting the Seahawks real trouble area for the last six years has been both tackles . Both tackles have ties to Mike Leach….

I coached a flag football team last spring and Abe was one of the Seahawks who visited. Two anecdotes from that:

First, he took a picture with my team, and I ended up next to him. It’s a sobering shot, finding that I’m closer in size to the 10-year olds than to him.

Second, he (of course) signed autographs, but the signing session was officially over by the time my game ended and I got my kids over. My daughter was just a few steps away when the PR guy came to shut it down and hustle him back to the bus. Abe started to turn away and then saw my kid & stopped. He told the PR guy ‘she’s got a Coug hat…of course I’m going to sign it.’ And he did.

I wonder what our training staff was feeding that guy. he was like 250 when he signed and he left at 322 pounds running a 4.9 forty.

he and Joe Dahl were basketball players in high school, probably a pretty good rule of thumb when recruiting O lineman, good Feet.

I'm going to predict that Lucas will go down as one of the most decorated NFL Cougs ever. He's going to make Pro Bowls, All Pros, and before the 2025 season sign a deal close to $100M.

Might want to keep that in mind for defensive linemen as well. Examples include Rien Long and Mkristo Bruce.

"Quandre Diggs, Abe Lucas post highest PFF grades for Seahawks in Week 18

The 2022 rookie class also put in a strong game, with several rookies posting high grades. On offense, right tackle Abe Lucas led the way with an 82.9 grade after missing the previous game due to injury."

He was pretty skinny then.
