With Washington, LSU, USC, and Florida all having openings for head coaches, as well as rumors of other big time programs looking to replace their coaches (Miami, UCLA, Texas) and only so many "big" names available; I'm sure the salaries are going to be through the roof. If they all want the same guy the deepest pockets are going to get him. Look at Tucker at MSU; huge money in only his second year. The dominos are going to be falling like no year before.

I understand that UW really isn't in the same sentence as USC, LSU, and Florida as the those three have recent national titles; but their fans think they are. That's what is driving so much of this: the unrealistic expectations of some fan bases. There is only one National title winner each year....

If I was a top high school recruit, I would not sign on the early signing date. Who knows if the coach you are signing with will be there given all the dominos that are going to fall. It will be an interesting month or two in college football.

And over at Liberty, they just gave Hugh Freeze a raise to $4.0M a year. That's the highest salary for an Independent, non-Power 5 in the country.

I think "interesting month or two" is probably an understatement... I also think that the current situation where coach demand outweighs coach supply is going to save a few coaches jobs this year. There are a lot of ADs out there that have to be looking at this coaching merry-go-round and thinking "no thanks"...

Surprised nobody is talking about the OC at BYU Roderick. He was really good at Utah as well. I think he is one of the best offensive minds out west. He is def one of the best So Cal and Utah recruiters out there.

There isnt a shortage of good coaches. There is a shortage of admin that know what they’re doing when they hire. There’s a shortage of training assistant coaches how to be head coaches. Being a head coach is running an organization. It isn’t always about coaching drills or calling plays. It can be a very different job.

Vertical movement in football is a problem. The most innovative, talented guy on the staff could be the GA. He was told to make coffee and wait his turn for 25-30 years. Guys that put together winning programs in high school or small college rarely get bumped up. Hiring from a pool of coordinators that have never been a head coach presents its own set of problems. You have some guys that have done an incredible job at a school that genuinely doesn’t give two shits if the kids win or lose, they never get a look cause a great season for them is 4-5 wins.

You know who has the best college program on the West Coast? Linfield College. 65 straight winning seasons. 7 national titles game appearances, winning 4 of them. The consistency in coaching, recruiting, developing players and decision making is tip top. Which of their coaches have moved up to be head coaches? Jay Locey and Joe Smith know what they’re doing.

The pattern is to recycle retreads vs looking for guys like this. I agree Biggs there’s probably HS coaches out there right now that could win a CFB title but may never get a look past small college (which some high schools in TX for example pay more than) because these programs are too scared to go outside the box. I’d rather take a chance on a guy like Dickert than shuffle in a Jeff Tedford who I think has a 50% chance of being mediocre, a 45% of being the football equivalent of Earnie Kent, and a 5% chance of doing anything special.

Tedford runs circles around Dickert. Kids literally won’t speak to Dickert if given the choice between him and Tedford.

If you removed the names from the resumes, Dickert’s is in the trash. He would be nowhere near the conversation of this job when stacked against Tedford.
