I have to hand it to OSU's new coach.....no surprise that he got a verbal from his son Tres, a top 50 in the nation recruit. But he also picked up 4-star shooting guard Stephen Thompson Jr. (son of an assistant OSU coach) and 3-star point guard Derrick Bruce, to go along with big man Drew Eubanks. That's a nice group of freshmen next year coming into that program and I can't help but think that Tinkle is a much better bench coach than Craig Robinson was. Beavers probably made a good hire.

No doubt a good start. If Tinkle can generate wins from that class down the road he could really have a good thing going.

If Tinkle starts out recruiting EK, there will be one less team for WSU to battle for the basement.

I think that Kent has hired a good coaching staff. The team will benefit from the improved coaching. The only coach i questioned was the retention of the recruiter. So far,he has not proved his worth to me. Most of the posters here screamed that he be retained. I wonder if they are now questioning that stance? It would not surprise me if he is replaced after this year.

There is only one recruiter on staff? That's news to me. The head coach is also a recruiter and, in fact, that is reportedly EK's specialty. Hopefully, he gets it going in the next couple of years but I have to say right now, on paper, Wayne Tinkle has lined up a better batch of recruits.

i am glad to clarify things for you. There usually is a coach who is primarily responsible for intiating and being the point man for possible recruits. He is constantly on the road and his abilities lead to establishing the coug program with the recruit and his family. The WSU list would probably look different if the guy OSU hired(Thompson ) had been hired. The guys who are" recruiters" are indeed prized for their abilities There are usually coaches who are responsible for the defense and/or offense and they spend most of their time coaching..I hope that this helps to clarify the different roles the coaches play in the respective programs. The good"recruiters" have established contacts with coaches throughout the land and this gets them in the front door which may be a log jam with the better recruits. it helps to have the high school coaches on your side.

All assistants are recruiters. The head coach is the responsible party gets all the credit and all the blame. So far EK is a bust in the recruiting department.

The head coach is the closer and so far EK hasn't closed any of any note. He currently has the #300 recruiting class for 2015.

Pure nonsense. I like the first group of recruits which Kent lined up on short notice. These guys will replace many of the current group of players and they will all receive large amounts of playing time. , This will happen much to the chargrin of fans who want the local kids to play. I like the one 2015 recruit,Pollard, who will have a long and productive career as a coug.Sour grapes are surfacing by the disgruntled fans who wanted the past coach to have another four years to totally demolosh the basketball program.

I guess ElC was responding to you. He can't follow the string for some reason. Anyway when I saw your post I knew he would straighten you out.

I really like Pollard in 2015 but this years recruits are basically the same as the previous coach was landing. We have to give EK a break on this year because of the late start, but Tinkle got a later start and has done pretty good. Sorry to say it but I would be very suprised if any of these recruits from this year make much of a impact anytime soon.

Heh heh, you don't seem to know much about recruiting at all. The 2014 group has not a single player that is even rated for heaven's sake. The JC player is the best and possibly there is one player Dunbar but he was actually under consideration long before Ernie even arrived.

As to the 2015 single recruit he is also not even rated. Might be servicable and might not but certainly not a gem recruit. Even Longrus and Boese were 3-star recruits by the previous regime.

Get over your hatred of the former coach and be at least realistic in your analysis of recruiting. Ernie and his three assistants did get some warm bodies for 2014 on short notice but have at this point none nothing in 2015. They have a bunch of visits coming up and may well close some players and hopefully will.

All of us on this board are fans and have been for a long time. We back all coaches even most giving Paul Graham a year or two before dumping his body under the bus....but we do know basketball and we do know recruiting.

So far Ernie has been spanked and clearly has to step it up in a major way to just complete with Oregon State and UW in the Pacific Northwest. Without the Johnnies and the joes I could care less about your system it won't be a winning one.

Try to follow the thread will ya.

Yeah Rich the Johnnie come latelys don't even seem to know how the boards work.

If you think these guys will be replacing the ones that come before you probably also thought Andre Winston was a Pac12 player....he wasn't and he was rated far above most of these guys.

One can look at Andre Winston's videos and see that he was not a good D1 player. He was not a smart player and he was limited physically. One can look at Ike and see that he is not a point guard. One could look at the Hawk and see that he was a D11 player and not worthy of a D1 schlorship. One can easily go down the list of the past coach's team and see that they were not D1 players whom would be successful at the D 1 level.. The players whom Kent has recruited are probably better players, lightly recruited or not. We shall see if they were evaluated correctly or not.One recognizes that Videos are just "good plays" but one has to look at their physical skills and skill sets to see if they are potentially good players after the four and five stars are off the board. One can see how they respond to different situations. It was not"hatred" of the past coach, just a straight assessment of his abilities as a coach. He was fired for multiple good reasons.Kent and his staff will have to coach these guys up as they are all that he has. We will see if they are up to the task.

If it was just a straight assessment of the past coach, than why did you constantly refer to him as Bonehead? If not hatred, there was definitely a lack of respect for the WSU coach. And for the record, I was never one of the guys who wanted to retain Bone and realized he was not the guy for the job even before his last season. Nonetheless, I refrained from calling him names.

Skills and skill set are important and sometimes they are evident in watching video. But Ernie's going to have to form a team, which includes guys playing specific roles to complement each other. Skills alone don't make a team.

I have muted my criticism of the past coach because he is history. I did not like his coaching and he was not earning his pay. He did not have a clue on how to coach a D1 college basketball team. Sometimes nicknames are earned. I did not respect his coaching ability and his handling of players and his staff. Sometimes nicknames are earned. He is ,by all accounts a good father and family man. However,he was a public figure who was not earning his money and did not deserve a five year contract. He basically ripped off the University for a lot of unearned money. So he is history and i want to relegate him to the past files. Now about that next recruit....

Ditto. I didn't care much for many things our previous Coach did, however, his recruiting was actually better than what we are currently seeing from Coach Kent.

Since EK is clearly El's new guy he has to defend him and it looks like that isn't going to be all that easy.

What do you like about Polland, just curious as contrasted to say Longrus?

two coaches son's and a third is friends with the coaches son's, let's not call him a miracle worker yet

What i like about Pollard is his intelligence and his willingness to play tough defense. He seems to like to play D and can run the court well. I suspect that he will average more points this year as he let his two college bound teammates take most of the shots. It is hard to find team players who care more about winning than individual stats. Pollard ,i believe may have taken one three point shot last year.It will be Rich if the cougs do well this year despite the protests from the past coach's camp.

I know ELC won't like this...BUT in Pollard I see a very Similar player to Hawkinson. Good basketball IQ, good footwork, great hands and good frame. Hopefully he won't have to be thrown in his freshmen year before he is ready. It may help him become more productive sooner having played but I think Hawkinson could have really benefited from a red shirt year. Pollard will hit campus in Hawks junior year and will have at least two years to mature in both body and basketball before he will be required to play major minutes.

It is like comparing night and day. The Hawk cannot jump .It would have been difficult last year to slide a credit card under his feet when he "jumped". He was awkward and had poor lateral movement and really does not run the court well. I hope for his sake and the teams' that he has vastly improved. Pollard has good lateral movement and can run with the guards. He can also jump and he has the athletic ability to play. He may play next year but for sure during his second year. The Hawk ,if not greatly improved, may transfer out after this year.So no,i do not like your comparison at all.

I knew you wouldn't lol! It should be noted I spent most of two days at elite camp. Pollard could be very good!

Man, for Hawk to go from a D1 player to a D Eleven? What a fall. El C, you have got your blinders on, to a fault. And I'm not sure if you've ever really watched a basketball game..it's the one where you throw the round thingy into the peach basket.

And for God Sakes, USE SPELL CHECK!!!

I hate to tell you this once again. The Hawk is not a D1 player. I guess there are lower leagues in which he may meet your profound expectations.
