Pac-12 braintrust prioritizing exposure over money?

Sounds like it per Jon Canzano:

"When I ask the involved parties of the new-look conference about the media rights distributions, they always downplay the money part. Everyone in college athletics likes and needs money to operate, but I understand what they mean ... the industry insiders keep pointing toward $10 million to $12 million per (Pac-12) school. But if you can get more exposure and a better partner for $8 million to $10 million, you'd jump all over that."

With their Pac-12 nest eggs, I could see the two flagship schools prioritizing partnerships with ESPN, TNT, CBS and so on over a larger media payout from Apple, Netflix and/or Amazon.

Maybe a little surprising Boise and the other G5 call-ups would agree as they have exit fees to pay and likely much smaller available cash reserves. But maybe the MWC evacuees have no say so until they actually officially join the conference in 2026?

Pete, I think the perspective is that the wider exposure leads to more eyeballs, and more eyeballs leads to better brand recognition. Brand recognition matters in a host of ways, from attracting recruits, to attracting everyday students, to attracting sponsors. As we head forward into the streaming era, brand value to individuals becomes a primary factor in marketing content directly from school to individual. It is hard to put an exact $ value on that, but there is no question that continuing to support our brand has to be near the top of our "to do" list.

If that's the model they're pursuing, the contract needs to include escalators as the brand value increases. It can't be at a fixed 8, 10, 12 million per year for 10 years - that should be set as the floor, with the actual payouts tied to the broadcast revenue.

Great post Crazy8

IMHO, it's good for WSU and OSU to stay attached to ESPN and/or FOX so that those two schools can be at the front of the line when the Big 12 expands again.

Again with the Big 12 fantasy. Let it go.

Only way we're getting into the Big 12 is if it's part of their desperate death rattle after the next round of contracts and realignment...and at that point, we might not want to.

Guessing the TV deal is five year tops.

Here's another quote fron J. Canzano's article that tells about the thinking of both WSU and OSU:

"Indeed, this media rights deal isn't as important as the next one figures to be, when the expected next round of college football realignment takes place."

Ann McCoy and her counterparts in Corvallis are already looking ahead to a jump to a Power 4 conference

Your right that the Big 12 is probably a fantasy, that should probably be let go.

But that said, the ACC, is what the point applicably applies to, just substitute ACC for Big 12.

IF, IF, IF WSU, OSU, PAC 2/12 get more exposure, bigger better brand, more, better, better then, equal to ACC, Big 12 TV viewership, etc, AND IF, IF, IF ACC is raided, has to backfill, THEN ACC, could, probably would raid, take WSU, OSU, BSU, Fresno St, SDSU, or Merge with the PAC 12.

The Big 12 won't do that, because Arizona, Colorado, didnt want WSU, OSU to come to Big 12, and Yormack, Oklahoma St, didnt want WSU, OSU.

That said, there is still a extremely small chance, that the Big 12 would either take BSU, Gonzaga, or merge with the entire PAC 12, IF, IF, IF, IF the Big 12 is raided, and has to backfill.

But that's a BIG IF, because the Big 12 would be more likely to merge, backfill with, from the ACC, if the Big 12 is raided, instead of the PAC 12.

So yeah, Pete, others probably need to drop the Big 12 Fantasy, because its probably a fantasy, and probably won't happen, as has been explained ad nauseum.

You guys are Hall of Fame posters for a reason, but I'll stick with my prediction: :)

At least 2 of 3 among WSU, OSU and the Zags will get invited to a 24-team Big 12 within the next 5 years

The whole P4 is unlikely to survive past the close of the current media deals. My prediction: There will be a Greed conference, made up of the richer SEC & B12 schools. The number of schools will probably be something like 55% of the current ones, plus a few adds (Notre Dame, as an example). Those schools will play no more than 7 league games (and maybe only 6, depending upon how they structure their league playoffs), then fatten their win totals with a few body bag games from other conferences. ACC & B12 will fragment into more logical regional conferences, that will probably incorporate some or all of the PAC, Memphis, Tulane and a few others that are still standing. Those regional leagues will have their own playoff. Then there will be a college Super Bowl between the Greed league winner and the All Else winner.

Along the way there will be some kind of contract system between player and school, with some reasonable level of compensation paid by the thief school to the school that loses a player while still under contract.
