Cockrell is the frosh PG whom i think that the cougs are still recruiting. He seems to have narrowed it down to Texas Tech,Houston and the cougs according to 247 Sport,. Cockrell is sound fundamentally both on offense and defense. He would be a long term answer to PG and seemingly has the intangible called leadership. The cougs are recruiting big men but will find a place for the young man. If he commits to the cougs they would be his team for about 3 1/2 years.

Bennie was Sampsons first break through recruit. He came in as a frosh on that horrible 89 team that went 1-17 in conference. Great shooter, ball handler, and passer. He was the mainstay as Kelvin and brought in the great JC class out of Texas the next season that turned the program around.

Jud Heatcote reportedly told Sampson after a game against MSU, that if he had Seltzer along with the rest of his team he would be a final 4 team.

i hardly remember Bennie Seltzer the player to be honest with you.

Then it was either before your time, or you dont know your WSU bball history very well.

Bennie Seltzer, Terrence Lewis, Neil Derrick, were awesome players, that Kelvin Sampson Recruited, that after 1,2 bad years, led to NIT's, and 1 NCAA tourney appearance in 92,93,94. 1990, 1991, were the 2 bad years.

If it hadnt been for PG Bennie Seltzer, and Terrence Lewis, WSU would have probably been bad at that time.

Bennie Seltzer was good enough, that he would have been the starting PG, not only of the team he was the starting PG for, but for ALL of the teams, post Sampson.

Bennie would have started over Low, Rochestie, Moore, etc.

None of the PG's since Bennie Seltzer, could even carry Bennie's Jockstrap, as that was how good Bennie Seltzer was as a PG.

Bennie was also a great slasher, penetrator, beating 1 on 1 defenders, driving to the basket, finishing both easy, tough Lay ups.

He would twist, contort, slither, etc, thru, both man, zone defenses, and then either dish out a assist, and or finish at the rim.

His about 47% from 3 point range, made it so that defenses, defenders had to cover him, not leave him open, making it easy to get to the basket.

He was also a great defender of the best point guards.

He averaged about 17.5 points per game. And about 4 to 7 assist per game. About 3,4,5,6 rebounds per game. About 2,3,4 Steals per game. And only about 1,2 turnovers per game, and almost no unforced turnovers per game.

I still dont get why Bennie was SNUBBED by the NBA, wasnt drafted, wasnt signed as a undrafted free agent, wasnt ever given a shot, tryout at the NBA, etc.

The only thing I can think of as to why, is him being from WSU, as WSU, and its players gets SNUBBED a lot. Surprised Klay wasnt SNUBBED as well.

That, and maybe Bennie wasn't tall enough, maybe couldnt dunk, maybe could only do reverse lay ups at best, maybe wasnt a FREAKISHLY athletic enough, etc.

All I know, is if I had been in charge of a NBA team, I would have either drafted or given both Bennie Seltzer, Terrence Lewis, Neil Derek, shots at the NBA, in addition to how Tony Harris was given a shot at the NBA.

But hey not surprising since Isaac Fontaine who only scored about 19 to 21 points per game and about 10, 30 to 50 point games against tough teams like Arizona, also got SNUBBED by the NBA.

I wasn’t sure on Crockrell initially but think he would be a really good pickup. As I posted somewhere else he’s moved to California and plays on a really good team. I think he had some transfer issues at Federal Way. Highlights don’t tell the whole story but seems like a fit:

Bennie could be arguably the best pg ever at WSU. He wasn't NBA caliber however. At 6-0 he wasnt quick enough or athletic enough for the NBA. Not sure he ever shot 40% from 3.

Bennie was a highlight reel from the start. He was a 1-man fast-break although when he passed his first year it usually resulted in a turnover because the player wasn’t ready. LaVarr Ball and his hands of stone were caught more than a few times.

I was around but having some issues which took me away from the college sports scene for a few years. So i did miss that period of coug basketball.i was aware of what was going on but i did not follow the team on a regular basis . Cockrell will be a very good college point guard and he has the ability to make other players better. He is also around 5'11 to 6'0 tall but has the strength not to be pushed around. i have seen him dunk once on a breakaway so his athleticism is improving. I do hope that the cougs can land him.

Would love to have this kid. A true point guard is much more needed than another mediocre jc post player. I'd guess that Haskins would be the key to recruiting him. By the way, his sister Tierra is one of the most heavily recruited high school track athletes in the country (also class of 2019) - maybe we could get them as a pair (wishful thinking).

If we get him maybe a few people would learn to take the "r" out of Elleby's name and put it in Crockrell where it belongs.

Morrison and Steward were both great players at WSU, but Morrison couldnt shoot a lick, and Steward was really a 2 guard playing the point. Best contenders for all time great point guards along with Benny were Rick Erickson and Rochestie.

Steward’s my sentimental choice, he was my HS B’ball coach. Great player, even better man.

I liked Steward too. It occurs to me that the point guard position has really evolved since those days. Indeed, not sure I ever heard the term point guard until Rav came on board. Prior to that your point guard was whichever guard could bring the ball up out of the back court under pressue. You had guards forwards and a center.

Pierre Cockrell had 15 assists in one game as his Prolific Prep CA team moved their record to 25-5
