So that there's something to discuss that isn't the infinite re-litigation of the Wulff years. It's like a perpetual motion machine of stupid, the equivalent of someone just staring at and arguing with the Hasselhoff Recursion forever.

Nicely done, Random. I especially would like to see some of the more accomplished (supposed) newbies push for the starting lineup--the likes of the two JC dbs and the freshman Toki on the D-line.

The youngsters on the d-line will hopefully start to make their presence felt by midseason. Not just Toki or Mitchell, but Ngalu Tapa and Kingston Fernandez and Hercules Mata'afa. More the merrier

Yeah I see a lot of interesting people coming on strong.

One person that really impressed me in the spring game was Reggie Coates. I expect him to do really well.

I also expect Broughton/Lunai to make an immediate impact.

I think Charleston White is good at the other Corner spot

The safeties and nickel will be interesting. If I would have to guess Luani, Lemora, and Hameed. would be out there, but who knows the secondary will be the most interesting place where things get sorted out.

Honest question.

Because our DB play was so bad last season I sort of starting "zoning-out" in terms of paying attention to the DBs on the roster.

I've heard Porter and White were our promising players last year at that position. Would you agree?

What makes them stand out?

Thanks!

I want to see Falk and Bender going at it. I mentioned elsewhere that a little bird told me (alluded to) the notion that Bender might be more highly thought of than Falk. Good to know - although I think Falk is going to tear it up out there. His mobility is huge in my opinion. Just the threat to run and/or rollout on occasion is bigtime. Bless Connor, but he was about as mobile as a heron in thigh deep water.

P.S. Please don't eve post the Hasselhoff thing again. It freaks me out.......

Well I'll start with White.

Charleston WhiteCB RS Soph - White was our best corner last year. He consistently played well in coverage and had 13 passes defended and our only secondary interception.

He also played in just 9 games. and his average of pass breakups per game was so so good that he was ranked 2nd in the country in that stat.

All of this was him playing as just a RS Freshmen. I expect him to get only better and if the post spring depth chart is any indicator of how things will shape up when we start next year he will be one of our starting corners.

Patrick Porter CB Soph. - Porter was one of our true freshmen to be thrown into the lineup last year. He has some pretty good skills one of the best being he is an excellent tackler. He started a couple games and did okay, but at the end of the season Marcellus Pippins took over the starting role.

Marcellus Pippins CB Soph - Pippins didn't play for most of the season last year but started to replace Porter as the #2 guy. while Charleston White got the most starts Pippins sort of crept into a starting position. Part of this was because White was injured due to the end of the year, and part was because Porter being young was getting beat on occasion so they were trying anybody they could to get things stabilized.

Right now the corners are ranked as follows
White, Pippins, Porter

We have two JCs in the incoming class

Treshon Broughton and Kirkland Parker - It's undeniable that Broughton is the furthest along of the two. He's an incredible athlete and he has the technique to back it up. Kirkland has the physical tools, but needs more development. You can see the possibilities with him, but he's just not as polished. He's big 6'1 and he's fast 4.4 speed, but the technique isn't quite there yet. Broughton is good enough to start game 1. He may be the best corner we've had in years. Trufant good? No, but he's a really good corner.

There are several young incoming freshmen that are really good, but I would be highly surprised if any saw the field. Maybe Sean Harper. he's got pretty much the same physical tools as Parker, but might be even better...as a true freshmen. so you never know, but Harper is the future DB to watch out for. It won't surprise me at all if he makes his way onto the field somehow quickly.

Thanks, definitely makes the DB situation a little more clear for me. It's unfortunate what happened last year, etc... Hopefully these guys develop significantly by next season.

Dumb question, but do you write for this site or any others?

Most interesting battle is the safeties.

Tailulu has been very underwhelming.

3 Safety spots in our defense now. SS, FS, and Nickel.

If I were to guess I think Luani is going to be 1 of those spots for sure. Lemora is the starting nickel

I probably could write for Cougcenter. They are the most like me in terms of how I see things, and I like what they do over there a lot, but I have a full time job (off this summer working from home), and writing all the time I think is really important and I can't make that sort of commitment.

If I could I would write over there all the time I would.

They have a great article featured from SB Nation talking almost exactly what I've been saying on here. It was kind of a relief because I was really certain I was right, but after reading their assessment it's pretty much what I've been saying.

Check out the article and read the comments.

Sorry Loyal, every few months the Wulff wars get the better of my temper. That was me acting out/demonstrating the psychic cost of that particular derp spiral.

White is a tremendous athlete, I'm surprised he didn't get more attention in HS (only 2 stars, etc). He has all the athleticism and ball skills to man up on a guy pretty effectively. Porter has size going for him but looked lost out there at times, partly youth and partly ball skills in comparison to White. Pippins impressed me with his acceleration and physicality for his size when we saw him at the end of the year, I think he may push Broughton for that starting spot. I agree that Sean Harper will push for time here. It was a shame we lost a guy with Farrar's wheels, but if he can't cover better than the others we have I'm sure we'll be fine.

Safety to me is where things get really interesting. Taliulu is an undersized run support safety, he doesn't have the speed to play the free spot regardless of effort. Lemora is a more physical version of Taliulu, perhaps a step faster but not the guy you want in center field. I assume he's playing nickel as the half-linebacker member of the group. Hameed has the speed to play safety but his injury issues and youth may mean a redshirt if they can keep him off the field. Luani will immediately compete for time here. I'm interested to see if Isaac Dotson will finally get the chance to show what he can do out there, he was a starter coming out of spring ball. Then you have all the other newcomers: Hunter Dale, Kameron Powell, Deion Singleton, etc. I expect one or more of these guys to push for a spot on the field immediately, we're far too thin at this position for any other outcome.

Tailulu was interesting. I remember going into the BYU game there was a little bit of excitement about him and then he kind of fell off the radar.

In regards to CougCenter. Not to bash on them too much, but they've sort of become a victim of their own success so to speak. How they write their articles, as well as how they treat commentators is fairly deplorable at times. I've seen them (the authors) pretty aggressively gang-up on commentators that disagree with their posts (even in a respectful manner). They sort of act in a bigoted way, which gets old fast, and they are also very quick to ban people. Happened to two of my buddies and myself on occasion (temporary ban for us). And to put icing on the cake, they've started "click-bait" type titles to their facebook posts linking to their articles.

It all gets a little old after awhile, although I am sure in real life they are way more normal dudes.

Yeah Tailulu is actually a really smart guy, but he might be too smart..meaning that he overthinks things trying to be too perfect instead of quickly reacting to what is going on and thus gets to situations too slowly.

Safety is really going to be the most interesting position battle to watch. I pretty much agree with what random soul says about Dotson being one to watch and Luani being in the mix immediately, and as for the young guys I think Kameron Powell/ Dale will be good future players, but more than likely will RS and develop.

Yeah I've seen the Cougcenter guys go after people, but I don't think it's personal just guys doing a lot of work and don't want to see people throw dirt on their work which they may be a little over sensitive about. There is no doubt they love the Cougs. I like them because they use tons of stats to support their work/view points, and they also write interesting complimentary pieces to what the Spokesman/Cougfan/WazzuWatch put out.

WTF does HCA: mean in front of cougcenter articles?

Hot Cougar Action. It's basically like a general summary of all things coug sports.
Links about the cougs, videos, random stuff from all over. Basically a general what's going on in the wide world of coug. They do it once a week.

I think our corner situation is fairly easy to figure out, however, our Safety dilemma may not be. I see these guys as the top 5 for the position (ranked in the order of my list) : Luani, Dotson, Lemora, Roach and Taliulu. Maybe Paris Taylor might get some looks as well (he is currently listed as a Safety now). I hope we can make that determination soon because I feel the more reps with the 1's, the more team chemistry and cohesiveness is created before we start playing games.

And btw, I said my piece about Wulff many times (long ago) and as much as I don't like the guy nor have any respect for him, I too am tired of all the continual repetition with how he was the worst Coach in WSU history on these boards.
