If Ward is as talented as some think, how did he get past evaluators the first go around? How is it we take Bruggman, Neville, Cooper etc and this kid doesn't get a sniff? How is it Arizona, Cal, UW have horrible QB play and this kid apparently has D1 talent?

Because he played in Texas and ran the triple option. Everyone around found the QBs they needed and he was the supposed “diamond in the rough”. Lots of the QBs you mentioned benefitted from playing alongside lots of college Oline, WR, and RBs on their respective teams… maybe had inflated grades because of the talent around them. Part of the issue with the system.

I expect that in the very near future (like now) there will be coaching staffs that more-or-less give up on recruiting high school players and just build teams from the portal. I think it is just so much more difficult to project what a 15 or 16 year-old is going to look like in D-1 when he is surrounded by no talent and is probably playing out of position in some weird scheme. For schools (like WSU) that aren't exactly hauling in the 4-stars, and barely finding 3-stars, maybe just do all your recruiting from your laptop, except if a high school kid just falls in your lap....

Agree. It could be easier to recruit other rosters than HS kids. No more calling kids for years on end. No more hat ceremonies. No more flying all over to find kids. No more worrying about grades. No more wondering how a kid will do in college.

There could be other staffs that go all in on high school kids too. When everyone goes to the portal it takes away their $$$ for high school kids.

The era of free agency is here. This is gonna get interesting.

Teams like WSU still have recruit and develop high school talent, and keep the talent on campus. They need to use the portal to plug holes and fill in areas where the missed. As long as they have a wide open offense with focus on the QB, they will pull in QB’s and receivers from the portal if they miss. They have to develop the lines, more difficult to get them through the portal, but that may change. It’s not the strong that survive, it’s those that adapt. Navigating the portal in years to come become more and more important.

Greater certainty, less risk and much more cost efficient and effort efficient .

How did Cooper Kupp not go to USC? How did Michael Roos not go to Michigan?

Outrage! Heresy!
