Here’s the list of 15 kids we lost to the portal today, according to On3:

OT Landon Roaten
OT Luke Roaten
LB Tai Faavae
CB Ethan O'Connor
CB Aslan Fraser
DL Khalil Laufau
RB Wayshawn Parker
TE Mahki Whitney
DL Hyrum-Benjamin Moors
DL Ansel Din-Mbuh
QB Brady McKelheer
P Nick Haberer
CB King Williams
WR Brandon Hills

There are a couple who were contributors this year, but for the most part it’s guys who were down the depth chart. Hopefully we can grab some guys heading the other direction and turn it into a net positive.

I’d be interested to see how long the Texans are staying in the program. Curious how long the high school kids are staying in the program overall.

Have you seen the number of walk-ons who don’t play, that have chosen the portal?

Anyone do a wellness check on @BiggsCoug? This is devastating.
I’d bet my left nut Biggs never walked on. If I had a nickel for every dude I knew who peaked in HS and claimed they “walked on” somewhere but “got hurt” or whatever the excuse is you couldn’t ever find them on a roster. He’s full of shit.

Wbo would you like to donate your left nut to?

Hopefully it won't be missed by a significant other.

Class move by ASU coach Dillingham:

Now help me, I believe and have posted that a player has to enter the portal by Dec. 28 (plus 5 days for the CFP teams). But I believe that they don't have to actually leave and join a new team by then. Just have to enroll at the new school for Spring semester to participate in Spring practice. Which could be a rush depending on when the school semester starts.

But yeah, class act, and of course it helps his team if some of these guys do stick around for the playoff game(s). Same route Dickert should take IMHO.

He showed up to a CC meeting hosted by Stretch @ Mitzels in Fife once with another O-linemen who was significant at the time. It was clear why he didn’t hold a P-12 (10?) scholarship.

He didn't play a lot this year, and Janikowski punted pretty well in his absence. Maybe that's a factor.
But Janikowski is done after this year, right? Haberer had a ticket to starting and playing all next year. Unless there's a yougin' coming up.

Correct that Janikowski is done. If our punter thinks we will suck he should stay - lots of exposure. Does he think that he has a big NIL payday coming? As an injury-prone punter?

Canzano on with Softy now @kjr discussing the Vanderbilt court case

re: Vanderbilt QB is suing NCAA to restore 2 years of his eligibility clock. He claims this could cause NCAA to withdraw eligibility clock altogether and leave discretion up to each school. Unlimited eligibility was mentioned.

How crazy would that be?

I believe Biggs was talking about the two scholarship olinemen from Texas.

Ansel is a Texan too. The ROI is prob not there on Texas kids. The length of time in the program to get them developed and moving up the depth chart and into starting roles is prob too long for most of them.

What is off is Laufai transferring . Are these guys really getting paid or do they want to be closer to home.

Could you inagjne the miney Long, Leon, Tupai , Eaton would get paid ?

The suit relates to time spent playing for a junior college…and from the short article I read, seems like he may have a legitimate argument. Apparently there are some “prep schools” who play football, and playing at those doesn’t affect eligibility. But, those schools play against jucos where eligibility is affected. Doesn’t seem to me there should be different rules like that.

I just saw that Colorado also has 15 guys in the portal. Apparently that program is imploding too? Or maybe it's just the terrible new world that we live in.
You can pretty much guarantee 15-20 in the portal every year now. And as someone else mentioned most of the guys we have in the portal aren’t starters. They’re guys looking for PT.

So for a program like ours you’re gonna have a few guys worthy of and looking for bigger NIL, a couple others that miss home or don’t like their coach, and 15 or so looking to move down and get on the field somewhere else (all assuming your coaching situation is stable).

For perspective when you have 85 guys getting scholarships you’re going to have half those guys at any given time who aren’t on the two deeps.

You mean 105 guys getting scholarships.......

One small correction. Just because someone enters the portal does not mean they are automatically leaving.

There are 3 groups:

The ones good enough to get a bunch of money...more than we would pay...and who are therefore probably leaving, unless we can offer enough to keep them.

The ones who would never see the field with us and are hoping to find a lower level place where they can play. If they find a place they will leave. If they don't find a place, they will stay, even if the 105 cap means they are not on the team. Of the three groups, this one probably cares most about academic progress and getting out with a degree that would get them a job.

In between are guys who figure they might get an offer somewhere, either to play on a lower level team or to be paid something to be a back up on a well funded team. Those guys will look at the offer; then compare to what ever we might pay; talk to CJD about what their chances with us would be next season (Dickert is generally considered to be pretty candid in those conversations) and then decide if the difference is enough to justify the hassle of a move. Several of these guys will probably end up staying.

I just read the lengthy Brand X list of portal players. Most of them had a "goodbye" statement, and Brand X listed bowl game replacements for those in the lineup. Sounds like a "you declare you are gone" attitude by Dickert. How do you skip your bowl game prep then turn around and come back? Now all eyes will be on Mateer. I recently posted the article about the ASU coach who said portal players were welcome to stay on the team for the playoff game(s). Dickert better do that if Mateer stays. And what is Eckhaus going to do? Lots of intrigue on the horizon.......

You enter, you’re out. Zero flexibility. IMO

Guys at the bottom of the food chain may declare and return. At Mateer’s level, the deal is done behind the scenes before the announcement is made.

I repeat that nobody who enters the portal is automatically gone. Goodbye messages, regardless. Life is a negotiation. So is the portal/NIL situation. I accept that most are gone, but I take very little for granted these days.

Speaking of goodbye messages, I've harped on them before for being insincere, but now I think my gripe is: are they even necessary? No one takes it personally that you're bailing and looking out for #1 - its the state of the game now. In fact, its expected.

So save the soliloquy and just move on.

Bye Felicia.

Dickert has stated in the past once you enter the Portal, you are gone and not welcome back. Has he changed his stance on this position? Smith our former basketball coach was very flexible, Dickert not so much. Does he have a new philosophy on player entering the Portal?

Apparently there was an article on Brand X this week spelling out how any new WSU football assistant coaches will be paid significantly less than their predecessors per the orders of Pres. Schulz and Anne McCoy.

Is it possible these savings could be diverted to WSU's fund for student-athletes since the schools will have the opportunity/obligation to compensate players beginning July 1, 2025?

Dr. Schultz has said more than once he plans to continue funding Cougar Athletics at a power conference level. Maybe this is what he has in mind?

It is easier in BB since the season is over during the portal period. Hard to imagine bailing on your team before the bowl game then coming back after and saying "just kidding". I would like to see (maybe too late now) Dickert do what ASU's coach is doing and say hey, you can declare for the portal and still play in the bowl (playoff in their case). At least you are sticking with your team and maybe the door to stay remains open.

Paying assistants a pittance is NOT being competitive at a power conference level.

That being said, he probably had his fingers crossed when he said that, so it doesn't really count.

Is it too much of a stretch to imagine the early portal date being a conspiracy by the traditional blue bloods to decimate other teams rosters before the bowl season to a) keep the lesser teams in their place by making them uncompetitive in their bowl game and b) providing weakened teams for the traditional blue bloods to play against during the bowl season?

You could be right but I think this whole mess has been set up to give programs with deeper pockets an advantage over other programs. There were reforms in the 1980’s such as limiting scholarships to 85 that were made that allowed programs such as WSU to become more competitive and now those are being taking away. I really don’t like the way colleges football and other college sports are going and I keep on hoping the insane college sports bubble that we are seeing pops and some semblance of sanity returns. The best way to do this is to quit watching all these games.

I think the portal dates are due to academic calendars and getting kids into schools...but it is hilarious they're making it about "education" at this point.

I believe that you are correct. WSU's semester starts what - one week after NY's? They could at least stretch it to past NY day, but much further would be problematic. Although why should they actually be in school to attend Spring practice? Or have to attend at all the way things are going? I'd like to see Wayshawn's grades for this semester about to end.

If he had 0.0 gpa, he could use credit retrieval and have a glowing transcript by the end of the weekend.

Remember “APR”? 😂

Bleeder, this was Dr. Schultz's quote to ESPN from August 2023:

Schulz made it clear that, regardless of conference or affiliation, Washington State will continue to "invest" like a Power 5 program. He also said Washington State will not cut sports, even facing a budget crunch he estimated would represent 40% of the school's athletic revenue disappearing. (The school already faces a budget deficit of more than $11 million, and he said using a student fee, which is low at the school, might be one way to help raise money for athletics.)

Would "invest" mean more facility enhancemnts/expansion or could he have been talking about the student-athletes specifically. All this stuff has happened so quickly it can be hard to keep up 🤷‍♂️

Any word if the administration is gaining traction on increasing student fees to help maintain sports funding at a high level?
