Question on NIL: would the average fan give $5 per month...

I doubt it. Bear in mind who the "average fan" is from looking around at the south side of the stadium during games. Take a guess as to their likely views about athletes getting paid and whether any significant portion would be willing to pay anything, bearing in mind our fairly low CAF numbers.

I think pretty hardcore types, if it had actual impacts, might give substantially more, though. I'll spare you guys the diatribes I wrote when NIL first burst on the scene, but if I was the type who ordinarily would give $10k to the CAF, I would rather pool that with some others as part of a package like Ward got to actually bring a difference-maker to Pullman, or as part of a fund that was integral to landing/keeping guys at a rate beyond that implied by our baseline recruiting level, than I would have it go to pay for practice volleyball jerseys, interest on debt, an overpay to Dickert with his starting pay, or whatever else.

Millennial and younger pay $5/mo to watch their favorite guy play video games, so yeah if you market it right. And there has to be a quid pro quo.

...to an entity that provides payments to athletes?
No, and neither would I in its current version. If they change the NIL model to be more equitable across institutions, and so it’s not free agency in the NCAA, I might change my mind…but I can’t support the current model.

Has this been thought of?

Example: When renewing your DOL Tabs in the state of Washington..."Would you like $5.00 to contribute to the Washington State Parks?

How about an option within the CAF renewal? *Please designate $$$ (X-number of dollars) to contribute to the Student NIL fund.

*Note: The CAF would either distribute equally to scholarship players, or to everyone on the roster.

Not sure if this is viable, but if they collected, let's say $100,000, and distributed it to the roster....at least it's something.

Will this disrupt a 5 Star NIL's merit? For instant, (from the example above) the 3 star recruit and a 5 star recruit both receive $1000. Will that take away from the 5 star recruit's perceived value, or merit?

I understand that it's possible a 1099 income tax Form must be generated and reported, and perhaps the University does not want to get involved issuing 1099's, but it's worth having a conversation over.

Your thoughts?

I posted that NIL was going to be big months ago. Most disagreed. Now look.

It is over for middle class schools. They won’t have the $ to land HS talent. They won’t have the $ to land transfer portal talent. They wont have the $ to keep their talent. They may actually be better off offering 0 NIL money and filling rosters with kids that see value in actually being on the field rather than collecting a check to stand on the sidelines and watch. Which probably excludes HS kids altogether. So now it is a year to year team of all transfers.

I dont fault kids for making money. I fault the NCAA for having zero bondaries.

No roster limit.
No salary cap.
No tampering rules.
Best teams pick first.
No multi year deals.

Everything that makes the NFL competitive and drives TV revenue dollars does not apply to the NCAA. This will be a SEC centric game very soon. They have the $, they are willing to do whatever needs to be done, it will only get stronger for them when they sign a new TV deal at $75,000,000 per year per school.

$5 might as well be a russian ruble.

I agree Biggs that we are going to be outmatched in NIL. And if the Cougar village doesn’t want to help us be competing it’s going to be very tough.

If a business sees good value in participating in NIL, they should do it. Someone like Timme at GU has been featured on NQ commercials for months - and fits right into their normal advertising campaign.

Not interested whatsoever on a personal level. It's not tax deductible and for most it would just be robbing Peter (the AD/School) to pay Paul (the athlete).

It’ll be tough for a lot of schools. It wont just be WSU.

The days of developing kids could be over. There is no value in coaching a kid up or finding a diamond in the rough only to watch him leave the next year. We may see teams go to the portal exclusively. The free transfer has been used and they may hold more value on being on the field.

You could have a true frosh show up, win a starting job, play the first four games blowing up…. then watch him enter the portal and that was his redshirt. Literally use a school for 4 games and be off to another school at the end of the semester.

The university is already in the business of tax forms, this wouldn’t be a heavy lift.

Really, seems like athletic scholarships should already be taxable, unless there’s an exemption I’m not aware of.

The use, administration and disclosure of state funds is so incredibly complex that it would become a clusterf*ck of epic proportions to establish a discretionary fund for the purpose of funneling money to individual student athletes based on NIL.

And in this state an incredibly real risk the money would end up in Nigeria.

But…these aren’t state funds. They’re donor funds. Many of the restrictions and requirements for management & accounting do not apply.

If i must walk into the bedroom and ask one of the premier government finance and accounting professionals in the state if not the entire country, I can.

It ain't as easy as 1-2-3.

Well, there’s government and there’s higher Ed. They’re connected, but they’re not the same. Much like higher Ed funds - legislatively allocated funds and donor funds are “different colors of money,” and don’t follow the same rules.
That’s part of why the CAF is managed through Foundation instead of the business office.
