The response and promotion from WSU has been good IMO. The charter somewhat suggest we are going to step up the resources as much as we can when we can. The tweets coming from Tony Bennett and then Steve Kerr. Pretty nice job of promoting the hire.

Feel the exact same way.It cannot hurt coach's recruiting and retention efforts to be getting press from these guys, Klay, and other NBA-related people. Gets our name out there.
WTF?! I'm loving the responses from the NBA types. I do it recall any of this, for any WSU hire. Ever.
One of Grippi's article's about the subject was especially bad. It made no logical sense. It stated that since other teams also use analytics now, that any advantage he may once had is gone. That has to be one of the dumbest things that I have read is a long time.No idea what's going to happen but, unlike Blanchette and Grippi, Bennett, Kerr and Altman may actually know what they're talking about.

It is like saying before Mick Leach was hired that the Air Raid is no longer a good offense because other teams run the Air Raid now.
People who write things like that come at it biased and then write to confirm their bias.
We all know, it is the coach that is important.
Just read both of his whiny, excuse riddled articles about the Gonzaga Bulldogs losing to Texas Tech. Zero credit given to Tech for outplaying the Bulldogs.
The responses from Bennett and the NBA people make Grippi's initial reaction look ignorant. What makes them worse is that Smith is coming out of the WCC and isn't an unknown. No idea what's going to happen but, unlike Blanchette and Grippi, Bennett, Kerr and Altman may actually know what they're talking about.

It is all about the coach. Two coaches can have the same data, but if only one of them knows how to interpret it correctly, then there is still an advantage. If only one coach can communicate the data to his team, then there is still an advantage. To continue your thought, Smith has been at it so long that he is likely able to understand and use all current analytics. Even if most teams use some analytics now, they still are going to be behind Smith because he is years ahead.Analytics may not be the advantage they once were. Though I'd wager Smith is on the next wave of analytics too.
His overall coaching record at both universities he has coached at shows how far he is ahead of the competition.
Heck of a good point. I rather like that he stayed there for six years as well. What he did at Colombia compared to other coaches who worked there is a work of a magician.

No idea how the hire will work but it doesn't help Gonzaga to see a good coach leave the WCC for Pullman.

This is an April Fool's post....right?
If not.....welcome back to the land of believers! We're excited to have you back on the bandwagon with us.

This is an example of how easy the Spokane media is on Few. Unless I missed it, they probably won’t ask him what he thinks of the Smith hire, even though it’s a relevant question.
I remember Olson saying that as well. His reaction to the hearing WSU hired Dick Bennett was classic. The expression on his face was just as good.I remember when Dick Bennett was hired - the collective "oh crap" from the Pac-10 coaches was palpable. I think it was Lute who said publicly "The Pac-10 just got a lot tougher.". And he found out just how tough when Kelati and crew took 'em down in Tucson.
And yes it is a relevant question for Few, seeing how Smith is/was a WCC coach, and WSU is still 75 miles away. And of course the Spokeszagman isn't going to ask it. Fine with me.
Recruits know.Show you how little I care about the NBA: I had no idea who David Fisdale is.
