Passed away at 85. He put the color in color commentary.
Madden coached in the NFL from 1969 to 1978 — all with the Raiders. He was 103-32-7 as head coach and led the 13-1 Raiders to a Super Bowl over the Minnesota Vikings in 1976. He was also the youngest coach to reach 100 regular-season victories when he did it at 42. He never had a losing season and still has the most wins among all Raiders coaches.
He also won 16 Emmys as a broadcaster.

Sheesh, I thought he has passed years ago. When he stopped doing the turducken shtick, even as a cameo, I thought he was gone.

Definitely left his impression on the game, though I doubt anyone under 30 could tell you why their video game is called Madden 20XX.

He hated to fly. Took his rv, the Madden Cruiser, to games whenever he could.

Anyone know he was in a Paul Simon video? Went from hating him to can't get enough. Oakland was fun to watch during the Stabler years and him paired with Summerall was football.

He's a loser...lost 5 AFC Championship games in 8 years! Kidding...although a bit frustrating if you're a raider fan is all I have to say about that.

If you took John Madden and Howard Cosell away from NFL broadcasts, it would be a much less colorful and less entertaining world. I'll add that the bozos who tried to imitate both generally failed. You have to be that kind of personality in the first place to make it work, and neither probably ever copied anyone else. They were originals. I suspect they are sitting with St. Peter, watching football games, and having a great time. RIP, Mr. Madden.

What gives you confidence that St. Peter was or is a football fan? If anybody, it was Thomas and he probs is a huge Coug fan doubter and all that 🤓

Madden created two generations of fans from kids watching and learning from him. And I actually think Cosell is a bit overrated as a play by play guy, venturing a lot more into color and leaning into his personality in ways that sometimes took away from the game. By contrast, his 'feud' with Muhammad Ali was fantastic. In watching old games I've found myself enjoying Don Criqui and Mike Patrick and Dick Enberg as play by play guys, and Merlin Olsen, Bill Walsh (dude was smart and savage, he'd tell you EXACTLY what he thought of what he was watching), and Dierdorf as color. And the most versatile was easily Frank Gifford. Could do both seamlessly, and with Cosell next to him in the booth, was often asked to

Krusty, no true Coug is a doubter. So much for Thomas.

As for Peter and football, he was hard headed and though he came from Galilee, it is clear that he secretly was Irish. Once again, perfect for football.

And that is all that I have to say about that! ;)

they took it down, whatever it was.
Some guy on Twitter saying Madden is responsible, in part, for the "slave trade" culture in sports and also perpetuated violence in our youth.
All because his name is on a football video game.

When I look at the debt that many students pile up getting a BS or BA degree (and even 2 year degrees, for that matter), despite working 20+ hours/week on top of going to school, I have a really hard time viewing any full ride scholarship situation as "slave trade". Sounds to me like a real disconnect from reality. Are they seriously saying that the kids who get those scholarships would be better off without them? Sounds both simplistic and naive.

Out of state tuition (most of our athletes) with food, lodging, etc comes in at just under $40k. That doesn't include the added benefits of the extra nutrition athletes get now, or the training table and gym facilities not available to the rest of the students.

Pull the schollies and let them NIL their asses off and see if they get to $40k.

They will get more. At Alabama, USC, etc. Teams like us will have a bunch of Uncle Rico’s.

Really well done documentary on Madden. Very good watch. It's on Tubi and Peacock.
