Is Mouse Davis coming too? He has got to be 90 years old.

If Harris can pick up the offense, lights out. He will eat the league alive.

Run and shoot is more prevalent in College Football than the TRUE air raid. And hence will be easier to defend at this level.

One thing I read elsewhere that concerns me about Hawaii's offense is that, while they run the ball more than we are accustomed to under Leach, it's the QB that does a lot of running by design. The Rainbows' top running back carried the ball just 48 more times than Borghi (174 rushing attempts total) with the benefit of playing in 15 games, not 13. That's still not very many average rushing attempts per game, especially considering the caliber of Borghi. I'm hoping that Rolovich will recognize the value of giving Max the ball more as a rusher under the new offense.

Glad Cougar

What frustrated me this year was MBs lack of carries. As Im sure many of you read lol.

As a defense, you wanna take away the offenses best player. Force them to make another player beat you.

WSUs best offensive player is MB. What he does best is run the ball.

Opposing defenses didnt actually have to stop MB from doing what he did best. WSU did it for them. So now the defense focuses on the next best player, essentially taking two guys away from WSU. One by their hand, WSU doing the rest. F’ucking stupid.

Leach will either adapt at MSU or be fired quickly.

If Rolo can feed MB his offense will flourish. Add a qb that can take off and run, defenses will be stretched too thin.

Again, the schedule is not tough. I will wait until after spring ball for my 12-0 prediction.

One huge benefit to Rolovich (and us) is that his #1 QB recruit will be joining him this Fall. That almost never works out for a new coach, especially this late into the recruiting season.

Even if Rolo had been our coach for a couple of years, de Laura would have been his top recruiting prospect. That’s significant.

Have to ask, does the OL in the run and shoot run block in the traditional sense i.e. hand down and drive off the ball? If so, we could be in a period of transition in our running game.

I don’t think that’s true, but not many programs run either the true air raid or the run and shoot. Leach is unique in that. What Rolo runs is more of a hybrid offense. It incorporates the run and shoot and the pistol, with a heavier usage of QB running plays. He uses some air raid principles as well. In fact, he visited Leach in Key West last season to discuss the passing game with him.

Honestly, it’s what a lot of us had been calling for with Leach. More running back usage and a QB who can run. Whatever you choose to name the offense, that’s the trend in collegiate and pro ball these days.

I'm not sold on de Laura being ready to start this year, run and shoot or not. Big leap from HS to P5, regardless of the O you run.

It's going to be interesting to watch the QB battle. Sounds like Rolo's QB run a lot so a couple of WSU QBs may end up in the transfer portal, sooner rather than later.

Im a pistol run game fan.

I know he isnt the splash that Leach was. I would like to see who he hires to coach defense.

But as long as we got a good passing coach and he can check all the boxes I require (cause we all know that is what is most important), I am fine with the hire.

Boxes to be checked:
Well coached.
Fit and strong.
All day tough.
Ultimate effort football.

I have been a huge fan of Harris. This offense should be called Borghi & Harris.

Who leaves? Cruz can run. Cammon can run. Bledsoe prob wants a big time pass game. The walk on from Philly is supposed to be able to run.

I think these kids may see more freedom coming and wanna compete. The job is open.

We will see. I wasn’t convinced when it was Leach because the Air Raid seems to take longer for QBs to adjust. And if JD truly ran the same offense in HS it’s really just about getting on the same page with the receivers.
The fact that he’s coming in the summer makes it pretty unlikely too. The other QBs will have the time in the spring to work in the offense with the receivers.

Agree 100% that we already have some kids who can move and that we don't need to worry. There's a small part of me that wonders if we picked Rolovich to increase the chances that De Laura stays and doesn't transfer.

I know they weren't at Nevada at the same time, but if elements of the pistol is what he desires, then I hope he offers Mastro the OC job.

It would be wise to get him on staff.

Im curious who he brings with. I was looking at his staff’s bios and there are some interesting coaches.

They weren't. But, while Rolovich was on staff at Nevada, they did run the Pistol from what I have read. This will be a Run & Shoot offense with some Pistol concepts mixed in from time to time. I am thinking short yardage and near the goal line

I’m sure that was part of the thought process, consciously or subconsciously. It’s a good starting point for any new head coach. He begins his job with an incoming freshman QB to mentor who was literally his 1st choice on the West coast.

I have not watched Hawaii this year, other than part of the OSU game. However...

...I was interested in what they did during the Colt Brennan days, and with Leach at Wazzu I did a lot of thinking about how the formations were pretty much the same but the QB/WR roles were different. Brennan was a mobile QB; not quite as much as Kelly used at Oregon, but certainly not a statue and there were such things as designed run plays. Leach could have done that, but for the most part did not have the right QB for that approach. Leach values execution (for the QB, that means completion %) over mobility, and recruited accordingly. Leach also has the QB check through reads and throw ahead of when a receiver reaches a known location, based on his route. The Run & Shoot with Brennan relied on the QB being on the same page as the WR's, because...and this is important for Air Raid fans to grasp...the WR was expected to alter his route, depending upon what he saw from the D. That meant that the QB does not fully know in advance what route the WR will run. That makes it harder to anticipate and throw ahead, knowing the WR will be there to catch the ball. The advantage this brings the Run & Shoot is that the WR is more likely to be open, since he can pick a pattern that he believes will put the DB at a disadvantage. The result is that the QB has to watch things unfold for a bit before he can throw, other than to a designated dump off route. That requirement to delay a bit can cut both ways. Some of the most explosive Air Raid plays come on a quick throw where the QB sees an open spot in the field and knows a guy is headed that direction, so pulls the trigger quickly. On the other hand, if the right DB coverage is in place, it is possible that no one will be headed for that open spot in the field. In the Run & Shoot, you almost always have someone open, since the WR's can improvise during the play. The question becomes whether the QB can wait long enough to find that WR. Hence, the need for QB mobility and the need for a run threat to prevent such things as a rush 3/drop 8. Try a rush 3/drop 8 against a R&S and you will get killed. It isn't all gravy with a R&S; in addition to having to wait for the play to unfold, there is a risk of the QB assuming that the WR is going to do something, and then finding out that he assumed wrong after he commits to the throw. Also, sometimes two WR's make decisions that foul each other up; that is where a lot of time playing together helps, because you have a good idea what the other receiver will do in a particular set of circumstances.

I think the entire R&S can be installed during the spring, but I question whether a QB will know the WR's well enough to be able to fully execute a R&S by the start of the season. It takes time to learn to read each other's minds, and I foresee a lot of summer "on their own" QB/WR drills with various DB formations. When the season starts, we'll have misfires and interceptions. That will get better as the season progresses. On the other hand, the other team will not be able to count out a QB run, let alone a RB run, and that will relax the blanket of WR coverage that the Air Raid sees.

Adding the Pistol could go a number of directions, and I haven't given that any thought. But the R&S vs. Air Raid for me comes down mostly to the points noted above. This is going to be interesting to watch!

Thanks for the comparison info cr8zy. It points out once again the importance of a QB that is a run threat as well as smart.

another interesting development to watch is the transition of the OL. Some will adjust to the 3 point stance and tighter splits better than others. We undoubtedly will see some shuffling of positions and some new names.

Exciting stuff.....Go Cougs!!!!!!

Here is a great Hal Mumme video showing the difference between the Run and Shoot and Air Raid.

I am excited about the hire. I saw Hawaii play a few times this year and liked their offense...and from what I have read, Rolo is a good recruiter.
