Great defensive team, record of 184-127, won the Big West 4 times, including this year. 27-5 this year, could be a team that could win a game in the dance this year. Coached with Dave Odom, Don Nelson and Mike Montgomery. Has been at Stanford, Wake Forrest and Golden State. Currently is 27-5. Should be the first call and hopefully only call. He will be in high demand most likely and UCLA would be wise to look into him, but they probably think they can get bigger names. He would be a great hire.

Good choice assuming he’d be interested.

On the subject of Big West - Dan Monson from LBSU?

Always have heard Monson has a strong distaste for WSU due to his father. I don't know why pops had issues with WSU but maybe his time at UI.

No to Monson, failed at Minnesota and LBSU hasn't been much the last few years. Unlike Moos I have a feeling that Chun has a few more resources on coaches. Moos went after Rice and when he said no, he had no clue what to do so he hired his old buddy. It'll probably be a coach we never heard of. Just get a coach that can recruit players and develop them. Nobody is going to have any expectations the first 3 years because of how bad the program is. A good time to start judging the new coach will be in 2023 when his first couple of true recruiting classes are upperclassmen.

Good points, Brent. Whether or not it was a key factor in letting Ernie go, there will be at least 5 scholarships to give for the 20-21 season, which means LOIs can be signed this upcoming fall. A new coach can come in and put his own guys on the floor very early. I would expect some transfers from WSU as well....so getting a coach who can identify & develop players to fit his style will be important and a great opportunity.

likelihood that Monson could be fired at LB St. I personally think that Chun has had someone in mind for a while. He wasted no time in making a move.

There’s not a chance in hell Dan Monson will be the next head coach at WSU. Zero.

Chun will bring in his own guy. And it probably won’t be on any message board list.

Russell Turner would be a fool to take this job. Guy actually has a future.

Chuns job search is headed to the scratch and dent bin. Someone looking to rebuild their career, someone without the hope of landing a better gig in the next few years (and there are over 100 better jobs in the D1 level), someone who thinks they can turn around WSU quickly and move on to a premiere job, or a middle of the road middle major coach looking for a payday.

Keep in mind several other P12 jobs are going to open up this year and all will be more attractive than ours.

Scratch and dent bin. i like that characterization of the search. So 2023 ,i wonder what the attendance and financial support will be?If this occurs then Chun has dug his own grave.

A change was necessary, unfortunately. Any chance to get fans excited, attending, and giving to basketball needed a change at the HC position. Ernie had lost all credibility.

I had hoped the team would do well enough to keep the status quo in place until we could invest in Hoops. 16 turnovers in the first half of a game which was the teams only shot at post season play pretty much said this wasn't going to happen.

I would think he gauges interest from some of the names out there but in the end it will be someone we haven't heard of and a connection in some way to Chun and/or Schultz. Hopefully we get some leaks but we will know when we know.

Whomever is hirde it will take a million per year and a 3- 5 year contract to sign him.The nonsense of 300 K per year and guaranteed early return will not fly. It is foolish to even think that much less put it in writing.

Read a name on the other board that peaked my interest. John Groce at Akron was an assistant coach at Ohio State when Chun was there. Groce ended up at Ohio and got them as far as the Sweet 16 one year before getting the job at Illinois. Although he had taken the Illini to 4 post season tournaments in his 5 years (one NCAA tournament), he got fired. He might like to get back to a larger conference. Probably one of many names that will be tossed around with little to no justification....simply a connection with Chun.

Groce's is interesting and would make sense.

Here's a total shot in the dark that was thrown out on the other board. Shaka Smart. My long shot "connection" is UT AD Chris Del Conte who once upon a time started out in Pullman when Livengood was in town. There are rumors they are looking to get out from under the $13M they still owe Smart through 2022-23 and "move Smart to a better fit". Maybe WSU's that better fit?

Doubtful and less realistic than most of the above but interesting to toss around.

Besides UCLA, who? WSU basketball will always be a stepping stone job. If you turn Wazzu around you'll get paid. If you don't, you still will get paid. Kent made over $11.2M to lose at WSU. New coach will be around $2M a year. And, maybe there's a Dick Bennett similar mentality out there where he just wants to prove people wrong. Like I said, it'll be a coach that we don't know about. The hire will not satisfy some people on this board for whatever reasons.

Kent made $1.4M a year, new coach will be close to $2M and will get a 5 year deal. We would never pay $300K, hell Bone was making more than Wulff when he was here.
