Ryan Leaf

It was one count of domestic battery. Might be related to a lockdown related squabble and not a relapse. Let’s hope so.

Too bad. Hopefully, there is more to the story and it isn't what it seems. We all felt good that it seemed he had turned his life around.

Feel the same way about Ryan Leaf and Jason Gesser.

A pair of CouGreat legends who should be supported, encouraged and welcomed by Wazzu Nation as they face life’s challenges.

We’d all want the same for our very own family members.

Wasn't there, not going to speculate on the severity - but when there's shouting/loud noise where police are called into a domestic dispute, somebody is going to jail - and in most situations, it's going to be the male getting booked. That is standard protocol to allow things to de-escalate.

I don't "know" any of these guys and they don't need me to be judge or jury. With Gesser it's a pretty simple test for me though. If any of the women involved were my daughter I know how I would feel about the guy.

Lockdown?
I assume you are referring to various public health measure that have been in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Wearing a mask when going to the supermarket is hardly a "lockdown", and if that is his defense it is pretty weak. I don't know Ryan but I liked him as a player and as a broadcaster, and I think he would have had a great pro career if he hadn't injured his wrist. But he has made a lifetime of poor decisions and I don't think we need to make excuses for him.

Travel restrictions, restaurant and pub closures, State and National Park closures, shelter orders. It was a lockdown.

This is unfortunate. When you have to have your freedom removed because you can't get along in society there is an issue.

I hope he can pull things together and move forward with his life.

Those seem more like inconveniences, not a lockdown.

It's both. Many people legitimately feel like it's a lockdown, and to them, the anxiety associated with it is real. Some people are fearful of the virus, and others are equally fearful of the consequences associated with the economic shutdown. I imagine that for many people, particularly addicts and others who have compulsive personality mindsets, the shelter orders rippled their lives considerably. Routine is critically important for those people, and disruption to their routines causes them issues that other people can't relate to. Mental health appointments have been conducted virtually, many addiction meetings have been postponed or are limited, etc. Is that an excuse for boorish or abusive behavior? Absolutely not, but it is a legitimate trigger.

There are a million triggers everyday, and being in a confined space with people you're not accustomed to being around - 24/7 - and learning to figure it out can be a challenge, especially for someone who only has what... 10 years of actual coping skills as opposed to a lifetime like the rest of us? I imagine Ryan has spent his sober years learning how to manage himself and his own actions, so knowing how to deal with a wife and kid who are also going stir-crazy isn't an innate skill.

We're still dealing with a kid who has mild depression because he hasn't seen his friends for going on 2 months and has been handcuffed to a screen for 6 hours a day for school - let me tell you, its a challenge as he's trying to cope with the world we live in, occasionally grumpy parents, and raging 13 yo hormones. Has anyone gotten a beat down? No. Elevated voices? Oh yeah.

All that being said, of course there is no excuse for laying hands. I don't know what happened, but the police report will come out and then we can debate whether or not what he did warrants being a pariah or not.

Tell the people who have lost their jobs (me included) that this is simply an "inconvenience".
Tell that to the small business owners who have busted their ass for 20 years making a go of it only to permanently close their doors while Costco, Walmart, etc show record profits.

Calling this an "inconvenience" is insulting.

I feel the majority of people who are OK with the stay at home policy are still collecting paychecks. Stay at home isn’t affecting them like other people who are being told they can’t work. Don’t really consider it being an inconvenience for them.

I will never know why a local bike shop that maybe has 25 foot trackers a day is closed but the pot shop is essential because it’s “medical”. Riding a bike has proven to have many medical benefits but since Inslee says they aren’t essential, they’re closed, so Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart get their business. Maybe they should get a Liquor license and a snack rack and call themselves essential.

Keep places that have large gatherings closed, but let the mom and pop shop that sells bicycles or whatever they might have be open.

Apply for a weed distributor license. Bikes and weed.

What's funny about this discussion is that without his past, people would know that a misdemeanor domestic battery charge means that someone heard him yell, "B!tch, if you don't give me some space, Ima slap yo head off!". Without his history, it would hardly be noticed. I'm planning on waiting to see what happens and actually comes out, rather than going on about his lifetime of bad decisions.

Exactly. The story is going to come out eventually.

His mug shot looks like he could kill someone, which leads me to believe either A) he is completely off the rails and getting arrested needed to happen or B) hes livid that hes heing to jail for what amounts to a heated argument with his wife.

We shall see.

Everyone sees what they want to see on things like this. You seen an angry guy ready to pound someone. I see a guy who's had a couple beers and is embarrassed to be there. Agree that we'll all know more soon enough. It will be interesting to see if they even make it to a September court date before dropping any charges.

79,

A couple of thoughts...does your job come back either in short term or long term once the economy has a pulse? I feel horrible for the pain this is bringing to everyone, or almost everyone.

I shouldn't speak for 1990 but I read what he was responding to. Not being able to go to the beach, going to a national park is the inconvenience,. I think on a surface and first glance view he wasn't trying to be insulting, especially when it comes to talking about Leaf being quarantined and having the police called on a domestic dispute. Leaf still has a job, a paycheck, or did. So the excuse/reason he would be frustrated is different than what you must be going through.

I'm in commercial printing sales. Have been for over 30 years now. The longer Inslee keeps his stranglehold on small businesses in Washington, the less likely my company will be able to hire me back.
And it's not totally tied to small businesses either. Example...I do all the ink on paper and signage for The Gorge venue. I also handle all printing that comes through the state of Washington procurement office. There was a hiring and spending freeze enacted by Inslee for the state of Washington a couple weeks ago and all of the events at The Gorge have been either postponed or outright cancelled. The trickle down effect of these shut downs is enormous. 25-30% unemployed, the highest in the nation.

Most addicts don't partake in any addictive substances, outside of cigarettes.

At some point I hate to say it all of the these governors are going to have to make the very difficult call in that the amount of deaths and hospitalization don't matter. People will have to make their own choice. Do I order out from my local bistro, or sit down inside and watch a Cougar away game. I would venture to say that 65% will social distance until there is a vaccine...except at the Gorge and it will look like the party I saw on the news in the Ozarks last weekend.

I do hope your industry and job comes back quickly.

Ummmmm.....what? My brother has a terrible alcohol addiction and would probably be dead if he hadn't moved back in with my parents for 10 years to get his life straightened out. Tens of thousands of people die from drug overdoses every year. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans addicted to opioids. There is no easy box that you can shove an addict into. Like I said, people see what they want.

I will say this....the state with the lowest per capita number of cases is also a state that had no lock down...
I don't think that "difficult call" is really all that difficult.

RECOVERING addicts... better? But you knew that, you just enjoy being dense for some reason.

Maybe I'm just dense. Given that there hasn't been anything that I've seen that suggests that Leach was under the influence of anything, maybe we shouldn't be laying out any real judgment. I said that he looks like he might have had a couple beers but I don't know that. The red cheeks and watery eyes could be because he was crying his f'ing head off in the police car as he wondered if he had destroyed his life.

I had a really interesting conversation several weeks ago. I respect both men and their opinions, and they couldn't have been further apart. One runs a very successful BIO Tech. He is the scientist. He also supports Inslee and his decisions, and maybe in part because he has him over to his house. But I really think it comes from the science background, and the years he has dedicated his life to helping find solutions to cancer.

The other party to the discussion is probably losing millions a month while there is a shutdown. I think in Feb he had 600 employees, he got down to 200 by mid march. In the discussion he felt Inslee has gone to far, and that he pledged to give whoever ran against Inslee 100k to start off with.

The first person could tell us everything that happened in 1918, and why it came back, and the second guy barely knew when 1918 was. Both very smart in their own way.

I don't know what data Inslee is seeing to keep us like New York State. I do believe even it comes back, I would think it will be a lighter version that will be manageable simply because people know what it is, how contagious it is, wear masks, stay six feet away from others, wash our hands, etc.

Like I said I don't know what Inslee is seeing that he can't open things up. I think Seattle is in a different position because so many of us can work from home. Maybe less efficient but still have that capacity.

I hope Inslee opens it up, I hope your biz comes roaring back....

Or maybe it is 100 in the desert right now. I hope for the best, that it was some how a misunderstanding. Most important I hope there was no relapse.

Two months of lockdown and you start seeing lots of this stuff.

Hmmm...This is not a cut, or attempt at humor, but the truth is Leaf has had his freedom taken away for a much longer period of time.
