an instant classic

You pay all that money to Wilson and you trust a 64 yard FG attempt over your million dollar man picking up 5 yards on 4th down

Wow

Dumb. McManus has a big leg but Hackett blew the game. With that call and the two goal line plays where they were scrambling to get a play off, perfect example of why head coaches shouldn’t be calling plays.

Buddy Hackett would have called a better game....

Makes me wonder if some of Leach’s blunders weren’t because of the same reason. Managing every facet of a game as a coach is hard enough without having your face buried in a playbook…or napkin in Leach’s case. Either have an OC that’s on the same page as you call the plays or have someone else make all of the in game decisions if you want to call plays. No way you can be great at both.

It wasn't just that they tried a 64 yard field goal but they showed very little interest in getting closer. They let the clock tick away after the 2 minute warning and didn't seem in any hurry. They even had 3 timeouts so they had more than enough time but acted like they were fine with a long field goal try.

At that point the thinking was it’s 4th down we can try to pick up the first and have some time left to run more plays and perhaps get closer or we can run it down and make this kick for aol the marbles. If they don’t make the first there ballgame is basically over anyways.
Problem is that FG is about a 10% probability at that distance while making that first is about a 49% probability. You get 15 yards in a minute you are at about 60% probability he makes the kick, and obviously keeps going up from there.
Very poor decision based on those numbers though. Mik check my work.

It was an interesting game, but I nearly turned it off as soon as I saw the chartreuse unis. Barf. Somebody was on drugs when they made that selection. Back when fire engine red was being reviewed/researched for emergency vehicles (70's) because it was not as visible at night as other colors, the research was clear: Neon chartreuse was by far the easiest to see. Even white was way ahead of red. A lot of vehicles got repainted over the years (our body shop did many of them). But chartreuse did not survive as the preferred color, regardless of safety or other considerations, because the neon version of that color is so bloody obnoxious. An assault on the eyes. Yech!!!!

That game was eerily similar to our game vs. Wisconsin.
Was thinking the exact same thing…Hawks D made plays when it counted and bent but didn’t break. All the stats in the world don’t matter if you can’t put the ball in the endzone or through the uprights. Same game gets played 10 times Denver probably wins 8 of them by two scores. What makes the game so fun and agonizing at the same time.

Agreed. Nothing screams the need to go back to old uniforms like that game. The old hawks and broncos unis from the 80s were top shelf.

"Bad" Russ showed up and Jamal Adams got hurt.

Just another gameday in Seattle...
Did you think Russ was bad? Actually thought he played pretty well. He threw two catchable balls in the EZ on the drive that stalled out and seemed like they were getting plays in late from the sideline on the goal line plays where they fumbled. Also Javonte shoulda been in on the first goal line play not Gordon. That stuff isn’t on him.

Aside from that you talk about fumbles lost/recovered which is one of the true “luck” stats. Hawks had two balls stripped that bounced right to their own guys that usually would have gone the other way and Denver lost both fumbles on the GL.

Was incredible the way the ball bounced the Hawks way…of course that atmosphere will lead to some wacky things to so props to the 12s for creating it.

Russ looked like Russ minus the 4 quarter theatrics (thanks Hatchet). Very good QB who holds on to the ball to long and let the play clock dwindle to much. You can blame the coaches last night for the play clock, but s.o.s. with Russ. Didn't see hero ball as much so that a plus for Denver.

He's either the best qb in the league or the most mediocre, there's no in-between it seems.

A neutral observer would not have looked at his play last night and said "this is a top 10 qb with 2 sb appearances and 1 win."

all my $.02, of course

70% completion for 340 yards. No turnovers (maybe he “should” have thrown a pick but didn’t). Thought he was pretty damn good and that place was loud, and Seahawks D was jacked. I’m disappointed they didn’t finish last night but I see Russ and the Broncos being pretty good this year. I’ve watched shitty offenses and QB play the last 5 years and that’s not what I saw last night. The fumbles/penalties large credit to the crowd and won’t be done ongoing problem they can’t fix. The FG call was stupid but Hackett admitted it and moving on.

I maintain both teams got what they were looking for with the trade and will be a big win for both. Russ’s contract will be bottom half of the QBs in the league in a couple years with the revenue numbers that are coming in for the league from TV. Josh Allen will see 2X Russ’s deal.

Chip, color is a personal choice and you are entitled to your preferences. I did not mention the similarity to the pukey uniforms that Whoregon wears, which adds to my distaste...

My thoughts:
  • I'm conflicted - I'm a CO-based Hawks fan who wants Russ to win in Denver (esp vs KC, who they haven't beaten since 2015). Can't say I wanted the Hawks to win, bc I don't think the current team is going anywhere, so the faster a rebuild is forced, the better IMO. Ended up leaning Hawks anyway just for the 12s/crowd noise story
  • This was like the Hawks' Super Bowl, and it showed: I doubt we see Geno's stat line at ANY other time in his career, and the rest of the D (esp Barton) played hair on fire. Doubt we see that again at any other time this season. Even Hawks fans ahead of time were saying "I don't care if we win another game this year." Don't love that attitude: seems to me Russ left bc they wouldn't give him the level of control over the offense he wanted. Don't blame Russ for that, blame Pete & Co.
  • Both teams escaped disaster: Russ threw a corner-of-the-EZ ball at one point that should have been easily picked but wasn't - he's thrown a lot of these in the last few years. And multiple, normally sure-handed Denver RBs had goal line fumble losses.
  • Russ remains a great QB who may nevertheless never be the same after years of being a short QB who can't see over his already-crumbling OL, and now hears footsteps constantly. On almost every drop, he wasn't seeing an open pass without having to scramble. I used to think that was getting pressure; now I believe there's no dropback where isn't hearing footsteps.
  • Russ also came out of the huddle with <10 seconds left on the play clock WAY too often, leading to delays of game
  • Denver's penalty game was atrocious. 100+ yards?! Other than some PI, SEA was good
  • Denver was supposed to have a dominant D and it looked horrible
  • Barton was a boss. In general, Seattle D looked great

Seattle should go back to the silver helmets, blue jerseys and silver pants and never look back.

Now that the LOB and Wilson era is over, it's time to switch it back.

Denver has a dominant D. They gave up 34 yards in the 2nd half and -13 in the 4th quarter. Very difficult to do that against any NFL team. Geno made some great plays in the first half on adrenaline. Also lions share of those 100+ yards in penalties were in the first half and called on Denver’s D…and a few were certainly home cookin calls.

They will be a top 5 D in the league this year. Bookmark this.
