Senior Day vs Oregon - Michael Flowers

DeWolf gets the start. It was good having him around this year.

Gueye's length and fluidity is definitely next level and he's still figuring out how to play.

1 more year max for Gueye. He’s a next level talent.

Agree that Gueye is a next level talent. There is a reason why he was projected as a lottery pick.

But I disagree that Gueye leaves for the NBA after his Sophmore year.

If he did leave after his soph year, while he would still make NBA, he would go either bottom of 1st round, top of 2nd. And he still needs some polished development, that wouldn't be finished by end of soph year.

If Gueye waits to leave for NBA after his Junior year is done, instead of after his soph year, he would go top 5 to top 10 in draft for a bigger payday.

And NBAdraftroom.com projected him to be lottery picked into NBA, after his Junior year, instead of his soph year.

Next year, his soph year, will be his breakout year, that is starting at end of this season.

But the polish, being NBA ready, likely won't happen until his Junior year.

What he Gueye needs to work on is 1. Getting a 3 point shot. 2. A midrange shot. 3. A fall away shot in post. 4. A post game like D Jackson. 5. Not turning ball over as much. 6. Ball handling, driving

If he does those things to go with his NBA athleticism, hops, etc, he would be almost impossible to stop and raise his NBA draft stock to top 4 to 8 in draft.

I have to laugh at the refs. In the first half, on a three-point attempt, they call Williams for a flop. Except, the defender jumped at Williams and knocked his legs out from under him. Then, this second half, the first bucket for the Ducks, the Duck player took four steps, and no traveling was called.

Our 3 pt shooting reputation creates the same call disparity as in football w PI when we were running the air raid. Teams consistently get way more fouls a FTs even when we do go inside.

Not sure why Bamba was called for the foul. He had equal chance at the ball. Bamba should have let it go though, it would have been a turnover.

Noah! Getting it figured out in time for a run in the conf tourney?! If he gets it going we can beat any team sans Zona.
I think the difference is Jackson. His presence changes the entire offense. They actually seem to have a little confidence in him..Finally a real post presence..

Yes it’s a combination. Yak has been phenomenal today and his presence is getting other guys good looks

That color guy said Roberts came from University College San Diego? Has he been this sharp the whole game?

Wish my wife was home to poke fun at since she is a UCSD alumnus.

On a more positive note, I had no idea what sort of score I was tuning into. Looks like we are really handing it to them. Great way to head into the conference tournament.

Another horrible call. DeWolf was definitely stationary

Former coach Pete Gillen (Xavier, Providence, UVA). I caught that as well and it made me laugh. Gillen's an east coach guy but oops! He took some getting used to, but I actually enjoyed him as the game went on. Might be alone on that feeling through.

He made a very astute comment … what wsu lacks is a true point guard. They lost close games because they didn’t have one.

Also having Jackson down low late in the game makes it where we aren’t jacking up a three but have a legitimate chance at a relatively easy two.

Finally a complete game for the Cougs.....both halves, good shooting, good defense, a whopping 21 assists, contributions from most everyone who played. And Noah easily had his best game of the season. 19 points & 8 assists. I thought his decision making was really good today. Ducks had no fire today and had a disastrous weekend, but give the Cougars credit....they really took it to them today.

Like others have said, that's the way WSU needs to play in the tournament.

Glad Cougar

Let's face it: the cougs haven't had a legit point since Flynn transferred. In my opinion, one of the most pressing needs Smith needs to fix. Would think if would be easier to find a good point than a good big, but it seems to have eluded us for a while now. Maybe it comes down to what a coach values most.

We have gone after some good ones, but they go elsewhere. Tahj Eaddy (USC) is one example that comes to mind in past years. Never seemed we were really in it for him, and he went to SC. If you look closer at the bigs we get they all came in with some red flags. No question they were all worth whatever their risk but Efe, Gueye, and Jackson all had some injury history plus needed time to develop. It's one thing to do that with a big, another when it's a guard.

Noah and Bamba are guards who obviously still need polish. Flowers has been forced into more of the PG role even though he's better suited off the ball. It's just where things are for us. There's a good reason all those years ago so many were excited when Sampson signed Bennie Seltzer even though the rest of the roster was pretty bad (if not awful). Once you have a PG identified it's a lot easier to figure out the rest.

Pretty darn good season. Picked 8th and finished with a winning P12 record. Hope we hold onto most of the roster.
Isn't it funny how for a lot of fans this season has felt disappointing, yet the Cougars finish no worse than a tie for 5th and possibly tied for 4th if Colorado loses. First winning conference record since the Sweet Sixteen team, I believe. I think all those close losses, especially in non-conference play, made it seem like we should have done better. But I'll take the results on the whole.

Glad Cougar

Interestingly enough, it took Sampson until his 7th year to have a winning conference season, at 10-8. Smith has a winning conference season in his 3rd. He has also clinched his second winning season, and has yet to have a losing season in the Palouse. If they can get a good PG in the portal, next year's team sets up to be very good. Hopefully, we see the Williams that we saw last year, and today.

This is so true. So many people have little objectivity, and even fewer are logical. There were quite a few people on this and brand x ripping players, and the coach.

Nah, it was the what... 5 game skid?

Not an easy stretch, but for a team that showed out like they did today, definitely should have won at least 1 or 2 of those games. And if we do... we're not even discussing maybe making the dance or having to win the P12 tourney to do so.

Imo the disappointed feeling some fans have is based on believing crazy/ exaggerated hype. This team is young and went through normal growing pains that resulted in some losses. We seem to be trending in the right direction but we played close games against the worst team in the the league but blowing out a slumping Oregon team feels oh so good going into the conference tournament. Give or take 30 points and we could have finished anywhere from 8th to 4th, with young team I’ll take that.
If we can keep everybody here next year things should be good. A nice NIT run could go along way to help next year.

It was different in those days. Teams were older, players didn't transfer as much, and "mid-major" were a bit of an afterthought. Not that it isn't still tough today because it is. We need to keep the core together and stay healthy. Hopefully a lead type PG emerges from the portal. Getting a couple wins the Pac 12 Tournament and even an NIT wouldn't hurt.

Dick Bennett always said third year in program was always the hardest . He said players don’t play within themselves and always try to do too much . Noah perfect example . While frustrating cause this is a top 16 team in country, they hit bunberous land mines .

It was different in those days. But, it is different for all teams. So, I don't think it matters that it was different. If building a team were easier now, then Ernie Kent still would be coaching the Cougars.

I remember that, and I agree with him. The players on the team were very inconsistent, and it led to a lot of close losses. Experienced players become more consistent.

Still, tied for fifth place in the Pac 12 is a nice place to be.

Of course it matters for a program like WSU in a "P5" conference because the factors weren't equal team to team within the conference. Still isn't the same but I wasn't suggesting it's a lot easier now to build in Pullman. Some of those difference from back then actually hurt us more today. Mid-major programs having a much bigger impact today make it tougher for us. The impact of facilities and resources for things like charters and now NIL deals make it tougher on us than back then as well.

You still haven't convinced me. There are advantages, and disadvantages, just like there were 30, 20, 10, years ago. So, what has really changed?

End of the day it's just my opinion. Some things that come to mind are the impact of early entry players to the NBA on UCLA-type programs. Media exposure (Pac 12 Network) and the impact of technology in general. Increased if not explosion of coach and player movement to different programs. Increase recruiting pools in areas that weren’t as deep 30 years ago (rural/International).

When Sampson was hired the hiring pool was probably Sampson. The rumor was we hired him because he agreed to stay at his current assistant coach salary that was around $40K. I think there's an argument that many of the changes over the last 30 odd years at least helped us hire a current head coach at a solid mid-major in Smith.

While I think the hill isn't as steep these days maybe it's just a different hill. These aren't exactly comparisons that can be proven or disproved. I do know Pullman's always been far from an easy gig no matter the timing. IMO, Smith has done a great job bringing in talent to compete. I like where we are headed.

Agree to disagree on any or all of the above though.

Picked 4,5,6. Only one that picked WSU 8th was the historically biased against WSU Pac 12 media.

Everybody else(ESPN, 247, Athlon, Ken Pom, Phil Steel, etc, picked WSU, 4th at best, 6,7th at worst, and a mix of 4,5,6 predictions).

Next year's team will probably win about 21,22,23,24,25,26, in the regular season, 1,2,3,4 Pac 12 tourney wins, about 12-8, 13-7, 14-6 in conference, about 2nd,3rd in conference, about 3rd,4th,5th,6th seed in NCAA, 2nd round, Sweet 16, Elite 8.

Will be the most extremely athletic, talented, EXPERIENCED, DEEP, WSU team, WSU will have ever had, in the whole entire WSU history.

As to PG, altho WSU won't have a TRUE, PURE PG, Tyrell Roberts, or Koulibaly, or Noah, will be good enough DISTRIBUTORS, as evidenced by Noah's 19 points, and EIGHT ASSIST, and Roberts 4,5 ASSIST.

WSU's guards are, will be the best Corp of guards in Pac 12, with Tyrell Roberts, Koulibaly, Rapp, Rice, at the 1, PG spot. Noah, Koulibaly, Rapp, at the 2, SG spot, and Rodman, Bamba, Noah, Rapp, at the 3 spot.

WSU probably doesn't need to get a guard from portal, but if do get a guard from portal, it would be another grad transfer guard.

Also Jaki can play the 3 spot, and maybe Rosario if he has developed, or if develops

And WSU probably gets the 6-10 Nigerian freshman recruit.

So WSU would probably have Dischon Jackson, Gueye, EFE, at Center,5 spot, and Gueye, EFE, Jaki, Jackson, 6-10 freshman Nigerian recruit, etc, at 4 spot.

WSU went with a 8,9,8.5 man Rotation this season.

Next season WSU will go with a 9,10,9.5 man rotation.

Getting a lead type, TRUE, PURE PG, from the portal is probably not necessary, as Noah's 19 points, and EIGHT ASSIST, demonstrates, and also Tyrell Roberts. There is also KOULIBALY.

WSU should have a DISTRIBUTOR, but if for some strange reason Noah, Tyrell, Koulibaly, can't, won't, don't distribute, WSU can as a ultimate last resort, get a grad transfer DISTRIBUTOR, thru the portal.
