I know expectations aren't great, but the basketball men did play a game and won it without too many problems. Thought that alone might be worthy of at least one or two comments. I actually saw continued improvement with the guard play, Brett Boese, and surprisingly, to me, Railey. Of course, San Jose had no one to counter Railey with, but he did show some fluidity underneath with the ball in his hands and also a soft touch on his foul shots. Still don't like the way this team defends and I think the won-loss in league play will not be good, but there are signs a competitive team is emerging from this group. Gratifyingly, the announcers both conjectured that the play of Hawkinson, which was once again excellent, should transfer into the league season. In other words, his play up until now has not been a fluke.

If his stats v. Gonzaga are an indicator, he should do well against most Pac-12 opponents (btw, he had 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting, and 11 rebounds against Spokane Cougar fans' favorite team). Another indicator comes in the young guards' gradual improvement, which is a necessary counter to opponents' focus on Lacy.
But keep in mind that SJstate was shorthanded Sunday ... "On Dec. 13 coach Dave Wojick suspended five players - including the team's top four scorers - for violating team rules. Wojick brought players from the football team just to have enough bodies Sunday."

It's hard to take much away from the SJSU game because they were nowhere near to full strength. Dunbar played a lot over Redding. Any reason why? Iroegbu didn't play much either so maybe the chance to get Dunbar and Que Johnson extended playing time.

Johnson and Jordan Railey could help a lot if the light would go on more consistently. I also don't like the defensive effort but overall they are playing much better as a team.

Hawkinson is what we hoped he would be when he came in and he still should improve his body and become a better player. He's a solid piece on a good team much like a lot of the Stanford bigs we have seen over the years.

I think we all see a tough couple of years (duh!) but so far I think Kent has done a decent job on the court. Recruiting, I'm not so sure.

Yes the cougs are beginning anew after a few years without a men s' basketball team. It takes time to start anew when basketball has not been a part of their athletic program for a few years.

Ernie said in the post-game Dunbar needed some playing time. Johnson had that dunk that showed some passion I haven't seen from him before. While Railey still can't hit a 2 footer he seems to be more focused. Hard to take too much away from this game. With the suspensions SJS only had 7 players available.

Johnson's dunk was definitely the kind of assertiveness you want to see but ultimately it's just a flash of what he's capable of doing on the floor. He 'compared' to Thompson in terms of talent coming out of high school but he hasn't shown the same "passion" as you say or most likely work-ethic to develop his game on both ends. Maybe it comes too easily but we need him to figure it out. There is no talent reason he shouldn't start on this team and play 25+ minutes a night.
