and it happened moments after the CFP rankings came out. Are there rules that New Years Six Bowls can only have so many participants from one conference??
 
Being #13 I don't see how the Cougs find their way into the Fiesta Bowl.

No. The rule is very clear - the top 4 get semifinals. Any conference champs not in the playoff get NY6 berths, assigned by contract where applicable. The highest ranked non-power 5 team gets a berth. Then remaining teams are assigned NY6 berths based solely on CFP ranking. No limit on how many teams from any conference.
The only way we get in is if we rise a spot. The only way that happens is if perception of schedule strength changes when comparing us to Penn State, Florida, or LSU. UF and LSU are SEC teams, so I wouldn’t count on that.
If Texas beats Oklahoma, or Northwestern beats Ohio State, we’re done.
 
Pitt plays Clemson. Pitt at 7-5 is the best win for Penn State. If Pitt gets blasted again by Clemson, maybe that will help.
