Something to make you feel good today

Nice. Not exactly textbook for a rescue method, but rescues don’t happen in textbooks.

Curious how long she was in the water. From the lack of coughing/gurgling/sputtering, hopefully she didn’t take in a lot of water.
Here is most of an email from a buddy on that.....

Brought to mind a presentation made at Children’s Orthopedic hospital (they just call it “Children’s “ now) at”Grand Rounds” back when I was in dental school.

We worked in the pedodontic clinic there during our senior year. Part of it was attending these “Grand Rounds” lectures where all the providers gathered in their auditorium before clinic rounds, to get a presentation on some subject.

The one Stretch’s video link brought to mind involved cold water drowning with kids. Pretty dramatic. The bottom line motto to take away from the lecture was “THEY’RE NOT DEAD UNTIL THEY’RE WARM AND DEAD!”…

There’s a lot more to it, as far as time and temp, etc. But the fact remains that folks have been resuscitated (especially kids) quite some time after “cold drownings”, with full recoveries!

Has to do with what’s called the “mammalian diving reflex”, where mammals (humans being one species of mammals) have a mechanism where exposure of head/face to very cold (water etc) works to slow heart rate and direct circulation to essential central organs - brain, heart, etc..

Part of why a cold towel to face is very, very helpful when heart is racing due to anxiety, trauma, exertion, etc.. Ice pack, bag of frozen peas/corn, etc works well, too. Also , when applied to back of neck can help regulate excess temps, heart rate, nausea, etc!

Funny how something from almost 45 years ago gets brought back suddenly by a message board post!

........and it reminds me of stories heard in the past about people brought back after a long time in the cold water, way longer than you might expect someone to recover from.
