Sounds like we just signed a JC corner

Lord knows we need help at corner, and the kid we just signed is eligible to play in 2015. He also had a couple of other big school offers. Hopefully this signing doesn't mean one of our other incoming DB's failed to qualify.

Our corner situation is improving rather quickly.

We have White who has been improving rapidly. He was one of the top performers in the conference last year, had our only INT and did extremely well in the spring game. He was #29 in the nation in passes defended playing just 9 games, and #3 in the nation in passes defended per game.

Porter is looking better and better. Pippins is getting better too.

(Safety) Shalom Luani, (CB) Treshon Broughton, and now Kirkland Parker (CB) make up the Jucos that are coming in that will challenge for playing time.

Safety wise we have Lemora, David Buc, Tailulu, Hameed, and Dotson

Then the unknowns Farrar, Powell, Hunter Dale, Molton who could emerge for playing time.

Our secondary last year was paper thin but all of sudden has a lot of people some experience, some youth... instead of just youth.

It will be improved quite a bit. Good? I don't know about that, but I would say we might achieve decent next year. If that's the case should do a LOT better.

We need stronger special teams play...if that can get decent we'll be in really good shape.

The secondary is far from being where we would all like it, but there are a lot of kids coming in and that means the staff is making it a priority to make that unit strong which is a big step forward.

Patrol brings up an interesting question… Did we lose someone?
The Spokesman article implied that we don't have a spot for him, so it's likely someone who didn't qualify giving up a spot. Guess we'll see who soon enough.

The good news: We have someone to fill a vacancy.

The not-so-good news: Obviously, corner recruiting has a major hole from efforts of the past 4 years or we wouldn't be seeing a JC guy being signed in the 11th bour.

Well with the addition of Tavares Martin that brings us up to 80 scholarships players allocated for the 2015 season...

This new CB makes it 81 and the limit is 85 so we are definitely under the limit there.

We are allowed to sign 25 kids every single year and this new addition will be number 26 but we probably will grey shirt somebody. Basically what grey shirting means is that that student has to pay for their first semester out of pocket. More than likely somebody that will for sure red shirt and one semester isn't a big deal to the family.

If we did lose someone it might be that other JC corner...so we replaced him with another. Either way it's not a big deal. All we are trying to do is improve the roster as much as we can.

I love the whole concept that our coaches are taking on this… Never give up. They have spots, they're going to fill them. Off-season, on, months after LOI… hard not to like the hard work they're putting in.

That hole was the Jackson-Dockery-Ford class of '12 all bailing. Combine that with the loss of Brown, and... well, you take all that PT the freshmen got last year as a silver lining.

We definitely had some of the people in the pipeline not make it.

2012
We took 3 safeties - Tailulu, D Buc, and Feddie Davey (Davey was injured and never made it to the field)
1 CB - Ray Ford - (Grades problems never made it)
CB - Jackson WR convert didn't make it
CB - Dockery - didn't want to make the switch to CB

2013
S - Lemora, Paris Taylor (now a LB), and Dotson - All 3 still on the team all 3 set to contribute
(CB) Markell Sanders (grades maybe? never really made it)
(CB) Daquan Brown (We know all about this guy)

2014
S - Deion Singleton (took a while but he's on the roster finally)
CB - Jeff Farrar - Still on the roster but came in late as a transfer
Pippins (CB) - Still on and a conttributor
Porter (CB) - Still on and a contributor
Hameed S - Still on and a contributor
Kevin Griffin (CB) - Left the team in December

So looking back we took 15 DBs from 2012-2014
7 left due to grades or discipline
1 moved to LB

There were a couple other Jucos I think we tried to get that never materialized either. So maybe that is nine or so...still

That's actually not that bad in terms of attrition, but the issues were putting young guys on an island who just weren't prepared to do so and were basically here's your Pac-12 jersey get out there and don't get burnt...which they did..often.

We are bringing in 3 corners and 3 safeties as it looks now on our commit list. Which matches the six brought in last year, and 2013 wasn't bad just the CBs didn't work out which was bad.

So looking over everything our recruiting wasn't a disaster it just isn't developed, and if we are putting this much effort into building a secondary that will definitely pay off in the next couple of years.

That's right Jackson was a WR that moved to CB that never materialized, Dockery also never made it so we tried to get a foot hold early, but couldn't get people to stick.

Also here's some links to people that are coming in on the defensive back side for 2015

CBs
Sean Harper - 6'1
Treshon Broughton - JC 6'1
Darrien Molton - 5'10
Kirkland Parker - JC 6'1

Safeties
Hunter Dale 6'0
Shalom Luani - JC 6'1
Kameron Powell - 5'11
Deion Singleton 6'2 (2014 late qualify)

Pending everyone is ready to go for the 2015 season that's an entire two deep ready to go in 2015.

This of course is in addition to Hameed, Lemora, Dotson, D. Buc, Tailulu, White, Porter, and Pippins, Roach, Farrar

Some of these players coming in 2015 more than likely will see the field early and if we had another class of this caliber coming in 2016 (highly doubtful, but let's hope so) then our secondary personnel issues are way way over

This is one of the biggest DB classes we've had in a long time...and as to the quality well we don't know that yet, but they look like players who can play. We had a lot of guys like Trufant, Coleman, Jason David, Abdullah bros., Paymah, Frampton who did well for us... Wulff of course ruined the trend, but to his credit he did bring in D. Buc so it wasn't a complete Wash, but now it looks like we are heading back to having a strong secondary once again.
