Pretty good turnout last Saturday vs uw. Hope they can rally this Saturday. Cougs feel like they are close to turning the corner (from the ghetto to a slightly nicer neighborhood) and need all the momentum they can get.

Don’t hold your breath. They are giving away a bunch of free stuff for the “weekend at Ernies” promo, but I don’t expect much.

Additionally, none of the current students “know how” to cheer for basketball. The two games we have good student crowds (UW, and UC Davis last year) they have been disorganized and quiet. It will take years to restore the culture.

I recall when they had the "4 Father's" BB event during the early Bennett years (Raveling, Harshman, Heathcote and ?). Raveling made the comment about how they had "gotten the students back", and mused about now needing to get the alumni back.

I haven't been in Beasley since the Bone years, and have no insight on how to reinvent the passion, atmosphere, and fan IQ that existed back then. Winning of course would be a start. I remember President Floyd donning a ZZU Crew shirt and hanging out in the student section. Kyle Weaver coming back to visit and sitting with them. Good times before we hit the wall.

The fan IQ thing is so simple to teach and learn. I so often would go nuts during FB when the fans (not just students) would get loud when WE had a crucial 3rd down. No, children, you get loud when THEY have a 3rd down - and don't wait until the ball is being snapped. Greet them with the noise as they break the huddle (remember what a huddle was?). Some otherwise intelligent people are sooooo stupid. Like some WW posters named.........naw, not going there on a Friday.

Surprised to hear this Loyal since Coach Bone has been gone almost 5 years.

Always figured you as the guy standing up and hollering "Go Cougs" — win or lose, rain, snow or shine, sold-out venue or small crowd.

Not for basketball. And I have no desire to go to Beasley while EK is our coach. I don't care if we win 25 games and someone gives me courtside tickets.

What's your hold-up with CEK?

Even some of the posters here who would like to see him step aside say they've met Ernie and he's first-class fella.

Guys, it's not rocket science.

  • Have a competitive product. Don't have to win, but at least have the hope/chance of winning.
  • Engage the student population. Every player needs to stand up at the beginning of class and ask kids to come. Coaches, staff, and players stand in the friendship mall or CUB and greet students and ask for support.
  • Better promos.

I numbered your bullets.
1. Yes this would help. Although you DO need to win more often than not.
2. OK, COMPLETELY disagree with this. It is not the job of the coaches, staff, and certainly not the players to stand up in class or out in the Mall and beg their fellow students to come watch them. No, no and no.
3. Meh. Like what? More t-shirts? Some plastic crap? No thanks. The only cheesy promo I ever thought had merit was the Butch Bobblehead promo. Came in a little box and everything. I still have mine, 10+ years later. Cute story, an out-of-town colleague heard about them and asked me to get one for her. Which I did.Bobble, bobble.

True - Ernie is a first class guy. He's a third class coach. He'd be really good in fund-raising and development for the next two years.

His new assistants appear to be propping him up. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy.

I agree. Only thing that will help is winning and social media marketing.

No student ever paid one cent to watch WSU play at home during the entire run of George Raveling in Pullman.
Games were rarely televised, maybe 25% of the conference schedule, zero of the nonconference including prestigious tourneys they may have entered.

Little to no player movement either - players were know to casual fans. Raveling even has widely circulated syndicated column that was in Sunday paper (clip column about college hoops probably put together by him and SID).

Good old days of big crowds every game including Thursdays and preseason ain't coming back.
