For several years, Cougar men's basketball didn't seem to have a team identity. This year's team appears to have adopted one– forcing turnovers and playing a high-energy defense. Smith says two-thirds of practice time has been spent on defense. The product on the floor reflects the emphasis. The team still looks like a group that doesn't always have a plan offensively (not having a lot of good shooters doesn't help), but they have quickly thrived at the defensive end.
The next three games should give the Cougars an opportunity to improve on the offensive end (although I wouldn't take anything for granted). The team overall needs to continue improving before heading into conference play. The Pac-12 has several teams that will be the best WSU has seen this year. At least this team has some strengths that an be counted on.
