Terrible

That was tough to watch, but 3 freshmen were ended up playing big minutes. Darling, who arguably would be redshirt if we had everyone, Houinsou, and Hamon-Crespin. By far the most extended minutes for Hamon-Crespin, and he managed to hold his own.

The Bamba foul at the end of regulation was a killer. Sent them to the line for an and-1 for the tie and fouled out Bamba.

They shot 4-30 from 3, 17-26 from the line. Jaki and Mullins in street clothes. Powell has completely lost his shot, Bamba had a bad game (especially from 3). Three freshmen on the court entire OT. Not much else to say.

Don't let Jourdand see you write those things, as those things arent legit reasons to lose, at least according to him, others.

Bamba flat was awful. A leader just can't miss 4 straight FT's and his defense was horrible. Waving at the guy and getting your 5th when you fail to block out.

Just an awful game.

Also situational awareness was also bad.

So what if his guy gets the rebound or scores a 2 pointer, Utah was down 3, and WSU would have gotten the ball back on a last possession, and Utah would have been forced to foul.

Yes there is a chance that could miss the FREETHROWS, have Utah come down and score a 2 pointer, and win by 1.

But you got to assume that won't happen, and either NOT FOUL, or if you FOUL, you make DAMN sure the player doesn't make the shot, and get a AND ONE.

If you can't make sure of that, YOU DO NOT FOUL, KEEP YOUR HANDS, ARMS, BODY AWAY, AND LET THEM HAVE THEIR 2 POINTER, ASSUMING YOU WILL STILL BE AHEAD BY 1, WITH THE LAST POSSESSION, GET FOULED AND MAKE YOUR FREETHROWS.

In fact some coaches have their team purposely foul before a shot, to prevent a 3 pointer from tying them, knowing that they will still be ahead 1 with last possession, will be fouled, and have to make FREETHROWS, etc.

So the Utah player getting the rebound, scoring didn't matter IF they scored with no foul.

There was just no need to foul.

And there was definitely a lack of awareness, discipline, control in fouling.

It was almost as bad as the Michigan player, calling a timeout they didn't have a losing the game.

Situational awareness, discipline, control and either NOT doing what Bamba or that Michigan player did, is IMPERATIVE.

That said, this will hopefully be a learning experience for Bamba, so that he doesn't do that again.

It was ugly shooting but still with that we should have won the game. Didn't play smart down the stretch and Bamba's foul was a killer. Just let the guy score and we are still up 1 with the ball and 6 seconds to go.

Yeah, plus free throws. If Powell hits the back end, we go up 4. Bamba though, that was a complete f-up on his part. Brutal loss.

The Cougs don’t have a point guard. At all, that I can see.
Smith is good on his recruiting of big men. He doesn't seem to understand the importance of having excellent point guard play. If you don't have that, then nothing else matters. And please don't mention not having Rice. He should've had a good backup.

If Smith wasn't good, didn't understand the importance of Point Guards, then he would not have Gotten, Bonton, Roberts, Flowers, Rice, Powell, Darling.

Bonton, Roberts, Flowers, were COMBO POINT GUARDS that were good at both SCORING, PASSING, ASSIST, POINT GUARD.

Rice was a PURE POINT GUARD, that got cancer, when he was supposed to be the starter instead.

Powell is a Point G/F/1/2/3, that got TWELVE ASSIST HIS FIRST WSU GAME, that has been BETWEEN how he was at Auburn, and Tennessee, at WSU.

Darling is a TRUE PURE POINT GUARD, that SCORED AND DISHED OUT ASSIST AT WILL IN HS(60 per game, and 5 to 7 to 9 ASSIST PER GAME)(SUPERIOR SHOOTING, DRIBBLING, PASSING, DRIVING, PENETRATION, SLASHING, BEATING OFF DRIBBLE(WHICH HE SHOWED OFF LAST GAME), ASSIST, ETC)(6-2, about 188 of MUSCLE)(PURE PG FRAME/TALENT/SKILL)

Now maybe Smith or one of his Assistants, hasn't been coaching as good as should be or left meat on bone,

But its certainly NOT because of not good enough POINT GUARD RECRUITING.

Also a lot of it is because of injuries.

And despite all the injuries the program has had under Smith, WSU still went to the NIT FINAL FOUR, WON 22,23,24 OVERALL TOTAL GAMES, AND WON 1,2 GAMES IN PAC 12 TOURNAMENT, WENT 11-9,(9-9, 8-10, is usually the best done(Even Sampson only had 9-9 at best), TIED FOR 5TH IN A CONFERENCE THAT WAS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST MBB CONFERENCES IN YEARS.

Now granted Smith left meat on the bone, as that team should have been a unbeaten in Noncon, 13-7, 3rd,4th place, 6,7,8 seed NCAA's, 2nd round elimination, 22,23,24,25,26 total win team, etc.

And they would have done that, if there had not been the lots of injuries, and if the Pac 12 had not been the best they had been in 10+ years.

I personally think it's a combo between injuries and slightly less good coaching.

As far as results Smith has slightly bettered Bone's Klay's, NIT FINAL FOUR, wins wise, as Smith won 22,23,24, compared to that season's 21,22 games.

Only Sampson, Raveling have had better on the court success, and Smith has done better then then, as it took Raveling, Sampson about 3 to 5 to 7 years to get the ball rolling(about 2.5 times as long as Smith.

I never thought I'd see the day at WSU that WSU have a Nebraska Tom Osbourne moments of having Tom Osbourne, Dickert, Smith, on Hot Seat, Fired, or calling for Hot Seat, Firing for ONLY winning 7 games(Dickert), 9, 10 games(Tom Osbourne, Nebraska), 22,23,24, games, NIT Final four(Smith).

Yes Doba, Bone got fired, but Doba was 5-7, 3,4,5 years after his big year, and Bone was only winning 10 games, 2,3,4 straight years after big year.

I think Smith will win 14,15,16 games, CBI, etc, and that this season is ANOMALLY, and Smith has injuries to blame, unlike Bone, Eastman, Doba, etc.

Has Smith left meat on Bone? Yes

Is it a lot of meat? No

And not that much meat difference between NIT FINAL FOUR, 23 WINS, 11-9, etc, and NCAA's, 1st round elimination.

Is there things to be frustrated about? Yes.

But a lot of that is injuries + a wee little tiny bit of slightly less good coaching.

And its certainly not a lack of recruiting good point guards.

A lot of Smith's point guards, have been very high rated, thought of, offers, etc.

Not Smith's fault that Rice came down with CANCER.

And the CANCER thing can have a big bad negative impact on the team, depending on how team, players handle it, no matter how good a job a coach does.

Imo Rice would have gotten playing time but probably wouldn’t have been a starter. This teams problem is we have zero man to man offense. Recruiting has been solid but how do we have no movement on offense? One on one dribbling is not an offense. We have had guards who could score, Bonton, Roberts, Flowers but if you’re going to rely on that, it’s not a good recipe for success. We don’t have players with that kind of talent we have to have move movement.
