That felt like Paul Wulff football

Dickert is all brakes no gas. He talks about all this JUICE yet he has no personality or charisma. Really nice guy, but he's an organized DC not a head coach. Failure to land a rb, an OT and a playmaker at WR from the portal will kill us. Instead we gave Walk-ons scholarships, because we couldn't use all our openings. Idaho is a below average Big Sky team.

Only positives I see is the play of our Defensive Ends and Henley. Henley was exceptional.

You may be right.

No personality? Ouch. That is painful.

Leach has no charisma and has done well.

Ha. And yet everyone was so willing to run Rolo out on a rail for what we embarrassingly now know was a ridiculous reason. Well time to own up and deal with the bed you made because this is where we are. Gonna have to embrace and accept the outcomes chums. I'm personally rather optimistic. I think this team has potential once they find their identity. Unfortunately gonna take 5-8 games to figure that out tho.

He is Upper Midwest on the West Coast. Will it work?

They touted all these guys who supposedly run 22+ mph...but there wasn't any separation on routes, or any huge runs....that worries me. The screen raid won't work if teams are just sitting on those short.....it appears that Ward doesn't throw a good deep ball. I know Victor and Bell can run...need to find a way to get them the ball in space. Next weekend could be real UGLY.

The failure to fill those holes was similar to Ernie Kent knowing every year he needed several big men (despite having decent back courts) and never landing one. Ernie obviously didn't bust ass recruiting but also didn't have NIL or looser transfer rules to work with either.

I am also still optimistic. One game does not a season make.

There were some very bright spots...but I expected better from our offense. Three turnovers was just bad ball protection. Idaho was doing the ball strip thing better than our defense did.

Next week our lines will experience a Big10 O and D line...

I wouldn’t go that far. I thought we looked like an arrogant team that almost got beat.

Your take closer then others so far.

What it really was, was this:

1. It was a TRAP game, with WSU looking past Idaho, feeling like they didn't have to show up, and that they would easily blow out Idaho, etc.

2. Point 1 was based that they really should have destroyed Idaho. But it's one thing for us fans to think, say that, and the players etc, to think that. Ok for us to think that. Less so for players to think that, not show up, etc.

3. WSU TRIED THEIR DAMNEDEST TO SNATCH DEFEAT FROM JAWS OF VICTORY.

4. Everybody on offense, EXCEPT OL(Which actually did well), screwed up.

A. Cam Ward over threw, under threw, missed 4,5 semi wide open WR's.

B. WR's didn't help Cam out by having WR's DROPPING 4,5,6 EASILY CATCHABLE 3RD DOWN INTO 1ST DOWN PASSES.

C. RB's AND WR didn't help things FUMBLING THE BALL OVER TO IDAHO.

other then that, the OL blocked well, and the RB's had awesome YPC, and awesome total yards, when they weren't FUMBLING.

And except for 2,3 MIRACLE PLAYS by Idaho's offense, WSU's defense DOMINATED IDAHO held them to 10 points.

WSU was really just BEATING THEMSELVES, SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT, FUMBLING BALL OVER 3 TIMES, MISSING A ABOUT 17 YARD CHIPSHOT FG, TRYING DAMNEDEST TO STEAL DEFEAT FROM JAWS OF VICTORY.

It reminded me of Leach's bowl game vs Colorado State, where DOMINATED CSU, only to fumble 3 times in row, muff the punt or kickoff reception, etc, to where CSU MIRACULOUSLY CAME BACK AND SCORED A LOT OF POINTS IN ABOUT 1,2,3 minutes.

WSU's OL, and defense DOMINATED IDAHO. Idaho didn't play good. WSU offense and special teams, tried to beat themselves, and almost succeeded.

Also what doesn't make sense is that WSU's defense DESTROYED Idaho, BUT got DESTROYED BY WSU's offense.

WSU's defense is WAY THE HELL BETTER THEN IDAHO's defense, and DESTROYED IDAHO, but yet WSU's offense DESTROYS WSU's AWESOME defense, and didn't do much against Idaho's CRAPPY defense.

How can a WSU offense do so awesome against such a awesome WSU defense, but yet do bad against a crappy Idaho defense because they were fumble happy, can't hang onto ball, can't catch balls, can't hit semi wide open WR's, etc?

It just doesn't compute, make logical sense.

WSU should have easily beat Idaho by at least 37 to 10 at minimum.

Guess it goes to show that you can't just not show up, fumble, miss chip shot 17 YARD fg's, etc, and either win or blow out your opponent, no matter how good you are, or what level opponent is or how beneath you they are.

Guess Dickert, staff needs to work on HOLDING ONTO BALL, making Chip shot fg's, and FOCUS, EFFORT, SHOWING UP, etc.

Hopefully that happens, and gets FIXED by, before WSU's next game.

If that doesn't happen WSU only wins 3,4,5 games, which would be too bad, since Cam Ward is supposed to be a top 25 QB, and since WSU SHOULD be able to win 7,8,9 wins, instead of only winning 3,4,5 games.

WSU can still win 6,7,8 wins, but to do so they will have to fix the crap they pulled, played against Idaho, and be more disciplined, focused, showing up, not missing chip shot fg's, not beating yourself, etc.

That was freaking embarrassing. At least Paul Wulf didn't have the talent(His fault), to win.

WSU has way the hell enough talent to win, and thus should easily win, instead of just barely getting by Idaho.

Like I said, Idaho is the same as Idaho State that Paul Wulf with LESS TALENT EASILY BEAT by about 47 + points.

If Paul Wulf can do that with LESS TALENT, Dickert/WSU/players, etc, SHOULD be able to come close to doing as good, winning by as big a margin as Paul Wulf did vs a Idaho, Idaho St type with LESS TALENT, since Dickert has MORE TALENT then Paul Wulf had.

I hope this opens the eyes of, awakens Dickert, WSU, players, etc, to the point where FIX things, not take things for granted, not be arrogant, not fail to show up, be focused, etc, so that they win 7,8 games like they SHOULD.

At least WSU didn't lose to Idaho a FCS Big Sky team, like how UW fuskies lost to FCS Big Sky Montana, last year, last season.

Cam Ward threw a 36 yard TD pass vs the defense that DESTROYED IDAHO DEFENSIVELY.

Also Cam Ward threw PLENTY of VERY DEEP BALLS QUITE WELL at the FCS level.

Cam Ward missed 3,4,5,6 semi wide open WR's, 1 of which was a deep ball.

Cam doesn't usually miss. Against the defense that DESTROYED IDAHO DEFENSIVELY, Cam went 14 of 15 for 100 yards and 2 TD's and a 36 yard TD pass, a NEAR PERFECT PERFORMANCE.

Since he did that against WSU's AWESOME defense, that DESTROYED Idaho, he SHOULD have been able to do it against the WEAKER IDAHO DEFENSE.

and the reason he didn't, and the reason for the fumbles, etc, is that Cam, etc, wasn't focused, wasn't prepared, didn't show up, etc.

Hopefully that gets fixed soon.

Also the OL played pretty good. Pass blocked ok, and created big holes for the RB's to run thru.

And the RB's ran the ball good. Nakia Watson ran for about 100 to 115 to 125 yards on about 10 to 13 to 16 carries, for about 6 to 8 to 10 yards per carry, when they weren't busy FUMBLING THE BALL OVER TO IDAHO.

Jaylen Jenkins ran the ball for about 10 to 14 to 18 yards on his first carry before he FUMBLED at the end of that run, carry, and then on about his 3rd, 4th carry he ran about 6 to 9 to 12 to 15 yards for a TD to put the cougs ahead.

And as far as the WR's, Renard Bell, Stribbling, Ollie, Lincoln Victor is one hell of a awesome WR corp that SHOULD do well.

Back before Renard Bell's injury that knocked him out all of last season, Renard Bell, was a GAME BREAKER

Stribbling WAS ABSOLUTELY TEARING IT UP AWESOMELY as a freshman last season, and Ollie was doing ok.

Lincoln Victor as a inexperienced redshirt freshman is the weakest link in the WR corp.

The WR's got semi open, semi separation enough times.

The problem wasn't getting open. The problem was DROPPING EASILY CATCHABLE BALLS HITTING THEM IN THE HANDS ON 3RD DOWNS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT, CONVERTED INTO 1ST DOWNS.

The problem wasn't lack of talent, etc.

The Problem was the talent NOT SHOWING UP, NOT BEING FOCUSED, NOT BEING READY, JITTERS, HICCUPS, ETC.

That's on them and the coaching.

They SHOULD have EASILY destroyed Idaho, especially since they DESTROYED the defense that DESTROYED Idaho DEFENSIVELY.

Rolo sucked. He got outscored 38-0 in the 2nd half twice in 11 games. That’s the only reason you need. L

I won’t go that far. This team has some hope and potential. It took 4 years to see potential on Wulff’s roster, and hope was just the name of a cheerleader.

What’s depressing to me is how quickly we went to an offense that could barely be stopped to one that went 3 & out on more than half their possessions against Idaho.

What's sad to me is how a Top 25 QB, 4700 yards 47 TD's vs only 10 Int's, can not show up, not be ready, not be focused and MISS ABOUT 3,4,5,6 SEMI WIDE OPEN WR's.

AND.

How the WR's could DROP ABOUT 3,4,5,6 PASSES THAT HIT THEM IN THE HANDS ON 3RD DOWN, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN CONVERTED INTO 1ST DOWNS, HAD THEY CAUGHT THOSE EASILY CATCHABLE PASSES.

AND HOW THE RB's and WR could FUMBLE 3 TIMES.

AND.

HOW A CHIPSHOT FG MISSED.

ALL THOSE THINGS COMBINED TOGETHER.

TALK ABOUT NOT SHOWING UP, AND NOT BEING READY, AND NOT BEING FOCUSED, ETC.

Rolo was not a good HC. Should've never been WSU's head coach to begin with.

potential on wulff's roster? never happened

With far more talent

It's too early to judge this team. Portland State in 2015 felt like Paul Wulff football and we won 9 games. EWU in 2016 felt like Paul Wulff football and we went 8-5.

In 2011, Wulff's last year, we wiped the field with Idaho State and UNLV by a combined score of 123-28 to start out the season 2-0. We went 2-8 the rest of that season.

Things are rarely as good or bad as they look in a first game.

I personally did not see the emotion in the head coach that I wanted to see. I agree the team seemed over confident. Lay into them coach! This aspect needs to change IMO. We need more Mike Leach, less Paul Wulff.

On the offense side, Cam will be EATEN ALIVE from here on out if he waits as long as he waited on Saturday. Vanilla offense or not, it's quick reads and quick throws. Period. That was not shown. I also felt the run was not utilized as much as Idaho was giving us. Our front 5 should push around Idaho's front 4 for 5 yard gains every time.

Dickert is a great guy. A very good technical (x's and o's) coach. Can run a program? CEO vs. a Manager.

Last season the team was playing with emotion a hot-handed JDL down the stretch.

Now it's Dickert's coaches and players. Time to prove it. It's not going to be easier from here on out.

Bad OL putting QB in danger? Check
Tight End in offense? Check
Coug state media: "Old coach bad, new coach good"? Check
Walden shows up at first press conference? Check

Missing Jody Sears and the courtesy car guy as Co-DCs however

Time will tell.

TE in the offense who isn't utilized. Great big check.

We'll see what happens. Plenty of things to improve, but with a W.

Definitely need RB depth.

Somewhat related, pick up lines using the word "hope" when speaking to a young lady are likely destined for failure.

I'm not sure the fourth down conversions were "outcoaching" as much as just acknowledging you're an underdog and having to roll the dice.
They were also very confident that they could beat Langford in 1-1 coverage whenever they needed to.

Yup, and the success they had with them kept them in it, while we didn’t put them away when they failed. Their coach played it like you should when you have nothing to lose.
