I’ve read that without a new media deal and a renewal, the PAC-12 ceases to exist as a legal entity in August 2024. I assume that means no more CFP payout.
Even if it’s true, if the remaining 4 try to stay at 4 for 2 years, the other powers will try to change the deal and freeze them out.
They can try, but it’ll be a risky push back legally and ethically. More importantly, the optics will be really bad if they fight too hard for their right to pick the carcass.
WSU is going to receive a golden handshake out of this to fully or mostly cover our debt.
USC bailed on the conference 10 months after saying no to expansion. Oregon an UW walked away from 100+ years of history and in state rivalries for short term $$. I hope you are right but if you think ethics plays at all into what any of these schools will or won’t do…
I agree, also if the conference continues to exist, they are no longer membrrs i see no right for them to raid the coffers
A new media deal will be had. That’s easy. It will be less.
The conference can say - like the Big12 -we are rebuilding with quality teams. I think the other conferences would give us support. Namely the ACc and SEC.
We’ll see. I still believe that there are “some” remaining ethics involved when it comes to institutional partnerships. They’ll fight for some money, but will likely concede that they can’t let WSU and OSU go under.
I hope you are right. In my experiences in life 99% of the time when you’ve established yourself as an asshole there’s no pain in becoming a bigger asshole. UW has been an asshole for decades and continues to do asshole things (ie fighting WSU medical school/Spokane). USC is no exception. Oregon is still relatively new to being an asshole so they are still learning.
