The Substitution rule : Offenses can substitute whenever they want. Defenses can substitute whenever they have time.

So, here is the cure for what ails WSU football. Solves the portal problem, keeps all 70 for 4 years and answers the need for "pay for best"

Football has two halves ( A & B ). WSU implements two starting teams: 11 O and 11 D for A, 11 O and 11 D for B. A is best 22 judged going into preseason sked. B is 2nd best 22. Remaining 26 are special teams for A and B. Special teams ( st ) also have an Ast and Bst group. This Ast group are the subs for A, which plays the first half. This Bst group are the subs for B, which plays the second half.

Come to Pullman, you WILL get playing time - lots of playing time ! No more defenses drained in 4th quarter. The almost best wont be sitting on a bench somewhere else. A and B get used to playing with the same group, and knowing the subs they might see. The only wild card is injury. Are the coaches smart enough to see the benefits ? Use the first 3 games to map out A and B. Then, reek havoc on the conf !

What WSU football is facing now, this IS the only path going forward. Hell, let A and B run different schemes where possible ! Make WSU a true nightmare for the opposing !

So a team that historically has trouble getting a quality 1-deep needs to immediately have a quality 2-deep?

Kids definitely would line up to sign with WSU knowing at most they'd play one half. Kids aren't into being the man or racking up numbers, nor do they have an interest in showing NFL teams they can play a full game, right? Our fans would love it, too. Pull the QB who has 250 yards in a half for the second-teamer in the Apple Cup, right after he gets rolling.

And no using different personnel against different teams in different mixes, mixing things up during a half, and so on. The scheming in different halves is interesting, but you can do that with conventional personnel, too, and there are all kinds of complicating factors that would arise in practice. As just one, while acknowledged, injuries would throw a wrench into this really quickly.

I'm all for thinking outside the box, but this wouldn't work, let alone being the only way forward for WSU.

I think continuing rotations we've seen is a better option. We've got tape that shows more than a one deep play, and that it doesn't matter if you're a 5th year senior or a true freshmen, the best guys are going to play.
