This wasn't posted yet and I didn't watch the game

Works for me. F-the zags.

For the other haters, Tony gets to the final 4. The shots of 'ol Dick were pretty nostalgic
I don't remember Dick smiling often. Mostly focused or yelling. Looked like pure joy in that last shot and I'm glad for Tony and Dick. I was pulling for UVa. but what a game!

If you live in Spokane, the zags are great for the Local economy. Regardless, F Mark Few.
Would love to see hard number on their affect on the local economy. Not sure how many outside bodies they bring in to fill their high school gym 15 times.

That high school gym had anywhere from four to five times more in attendance than virtually every Coug game this year.

We come across really petty celebrating their loss in the Elite 8 while we’re worrying about having 8 players on the team next year.

GU enrollment is up 4000 students since their run in B.B. began. Yes they 2 are related. They’ve built housing and expanded the campus probably in the range of $500M. Extra faculty as well. No hard data but many of their students appear to be “privileged” and spend lots of money locally. Bar owners love them as well since so few can get into the Kennel the bars are pretty busy on game nights.
The only loser is Bobby Brett who owns the hockey team. The Arena used to fill up on Saturday nights but Joe Sports fan would rather watch the zags on TV than go to a hockey game now.

Not petty just facts. There are high school gyms the same size as the one at GU with its roll up bleachers.

I'd also say gu basketball success has had an impact on Hoopfest. Hard to quantify that one but doubt it would be near as popular without the obsession with gu hoops in Spokane.

I'm not a fan of Mark Few but I certainly respect what he and Roth have built there (with some luck and circumstance).

interesting angle. Thanks for the thoughtful post. Would you say 90%+ of that increase in enrollment is due to basketball success? I agree that many GU students seem privileged...

I was in the student section for the 2015 game and some zag students showed up. One of the guys began to hit on a WSU girl. She said “so you go to Gonzaga?” He replied with a proud “yes.” She then stated “oh! So you are a rich kid from Seattle who couldn’t get into uw!” That was the end of his flirting.

80-90% would be my guess but really have no idea. Pretty much hit it on the head with the Seattle kids but they get students from all over the place, especially California.

I liked seeing Gonzaga win at one time. I haven't liked the way Gonzaga has generally fallen in line with the UW and tried to hurt WSU as they seemed to do with the Medicial school in Spokane. So F*** GU. I don't think that's petty at all.

Those are pretty much my sentiments. I also just got sick and tired of hearing about them.

So do the Spokane papers close up shop until November, since all they would have to cover until then is sports not GU related? Glad to see their smug, poop don’t smell behinds gone. I guess Blanchette and crew can have fun with back handed complements or funny insults at the expense of WSU.

I was really happy for the Bennetts. It is warming to see hard work rewarded. Tony is still doing it the old-fashioned way. He doesn't get one-and-doners. He develops and tutors his roster over time, much like in Pullman, although with a slightly higher talent level. Still relies on the under-the radar types. Duke is loaded with frosh, much like Kentucky and NC. Much prefer the Bennett model. Few relies on out-recruiting the field and having more horses then the other guy. He mostly comes up short when coaching matters.

Still petty.

Doing basically what everyone complains about Blanchette doing reveling in the Coug's misery.

Except Blanchette even pokes fun of the success in football. Grippi panned Smith for being the best WSU could probably do.

I've always been critical of these "economic impact" figures, regardless of who/what we are talking about. And the multipliers. $1 spent becomes $5 when all the trickle down is included. Oh, BS.

Gonazaga definitely doesn't bring in thousands or even hundreds of away fans to games. The money spent by locals is already there, would be spent on something else anyway.

Yes Gonzaga's enrollment growth can be tied to their basketball team, which is really kind of pathetic if you ask me. Jimmy Kimmel isn't that far off in that regard. WSU has grown by 10,000 students in the same period, with 4,500 in Pullman and over 1.500 in Spokane. But then we are a Tier 1 research university.

Petty? Nah, just fans doing what they are supposed to do with sports.....root for some teams, root against others. I tend to root for underdogs, which Gonzaga was at one time. Now they aren't, so it was fun for me to see the underdog Texas Tech outplay them.

Glad Cougar

Yep. F-gonzaga and Few. I didn't see him tweeting out what a great coach his former adversary is and how good it will be for WSU and how he looks forward to renewing the rivalry once we quit being "bottom feeders" as he calls WSU.

Much respect for the Gonzaga basketball program.

Their success has made it possible for the national news media to know how to pronounce Gonzaga and Spokane whenever there is a story on retired pedophile priests being relocated to Spokane (the original transfer portal?).....

So, how long have you had Zag season tickets? :D

Since the 12th of Never.

Haven't been to a non-Coug game in McCarthy since Morrison was there. And never spent a dime at Gonzaga on anything but popcorn even then.

So I'm as big a Gonzaga booster as Bill Moos is a Coug booster.
