Transfer Portal

Loyal, it appears that over the past decade the trend for a lot of kids has been to figure that if they are unlikely to play (and play soon) where they are, they will look for another place where they will see the field or the floor or the pool or the court or what ever surface it is that they play in or on.

I haven't noticed a lot of theatre students transferring if they don't get the lead, but the current culture is apparently not the same for that group. Certainly we have not built the high school theatre kids up to the point that their entire reason for being is to perform, with the attendant pressures and dismissal of everything else in their life if they can't pull that off.

We can bemoan the decline of the "team over self" ethos all we want, but it is a fact. The mass quantity of high school transfers here in SoCal every year, many with anecdotal stories including all forms of bribery (mom and/or dad's job, a car, coffee cups of cash, etc.) is just a prelim step before the college career and transfer portal. It is not unheard of for a star high school player here to play for 3 schools in 4 years, and 2 schools in 4 years is almost routine.

I guess we could blame it all on Spokane....
