Every summer since I can remember, the football program has open, student body tryouts. Can anyone think of an impact player that has made the team this way?

Was Mawuli Davis a walk on? From what I remember he was, came out of nowhere. Think he was a transfer though, so maybe he did get a ride, I am not at all sure.

How about Scott Lunde? For some reason I am thinking that he started as a walk on.

Patrick Henderson didn't get the PT as brother Colin, but I think he was a walk on.

Waiting for better memories to confirm or correct me.........

quick google search led me to brand x, which is reporting that we are set to offer a record number of walk ons full rides. My first reaction is that that isn't great news if true.

What that means is a good walk on program.

I know that it can theoretically mean that the Scholly players that have are weak, and that because of that Walk ons had a easy time getting, earning scholly's.

But it can also mean that the walk ons were so extremely good, that they took schollies from even very good players.

Either way, if a walk on gets a scholly, it's because THEY EARNED IT, ARE GOOD, ARE GOOD ENOUGH, ESPECIALLY SINCE DICKERT AND MORRIS, ETC, ARE GOOD EVALUATORS, AND MAKE SURE WALK ONS ARE TRULY GOOD, HAVE EARNED SCHOLLIES.

Whether it's a Walk on that is good, or good enough, that has earned a scholly, or a non walk on good scholly player, the net result, is that have a good player.

Back when Falk walked on, became the starter, etc, would it have been right to have thought, said oh no our QB Corp, team is in trouble because Falk was a walk on that earned a scholly, became a starter.

Also most of the walk ons that have earned Schollies, are 3rd, 4th string players, not those in the 2 deeps.

That means the team will be ok until Dickert has the chance to get some better recruits.

Also remember that ROLO, left the team in a recruiting mess for Dickert, that he had a extremely short period to recruit that hampered him his first recruiting class.

That's a lot of why a lot of walk ons earning Schollies, because they are from that hampered first recruiting class.

It also shows that Dickert did some very good evaluation of walk ons in that first hampered recruiting class.

Also Dickert has done better, ok, semi good, etc his 2nd recruiting class. And will probably do even better in 3rd recruiting class.

And Dickert will probably win about 4.5 to 8.5 games this season, and 8,9,10,11 games the season after this coming season.

Which will improve recruiting, which will make up for all the greatly evaluated walk ons from the first hampered class that have earned Schollies.

Bottom line: THERE IS PROBABLY NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AND A LOT OF WALK ONS EARNING SCHOLLIES PROBABLY WONT BE A BIG DEAL.

Davis did come out of nowhere either in fall camp or spring ball. I believe he transferred from New Mexico State.

Another linebacker going back to the early 90's that walked-on and became a starter was Kurt Loertscher.

6'4" and a pretty solid LB for us.

Hey! How about that? My feeble old mind was three for three-Davis, Lunde, and Henderson.

I had thought for a long time that CougKurt was Mr Loertscher, but I asked him one time on the board if it was him and he denied it. Maybe just hiding from celebrity? :)

Pretty sure Cory WIthrow also started as a walk-on. Don't know that I've ever seen a real contributor come from on-campus tryouts, but we've had several walk-ons who worked their way into starting roles...and even into some NFL camps.

Yep, Withrow is listed in the article I linked above. Ken Granberry as well.

I’m pretty sure Lunde was a campus tryout guy. Don’t think he was invited could be wrong.
Does Mike Bush count! 😊

Since the board doesn't seem to be moderated anymore, I'll link an article on the top 10 walk ons at Wazzu....
Actually, the board is casually moderated, but only for language, flaming, and anything inappropriate. We don't care about CF.C related content.

Exactly, kinda what I was asking about. You think over the years a few student bodies would have made an impact, but maybe not Some small school, overlooked athlete who didn’t want to go to a small school, type

Bobby Boucher?

Good friend of mine. He was invited.
Ugh. I did not know that he passed not sure how I missed it. Dude had a heart of gold, one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. When I tell people about Polynesian football players and the type of people they are and the type of players they are, he’s the guy that always pops into my head. Nicest dudes who will give you the shirt off their back…and between the lines absolutely go to war for their brothers. RIP indeed.
