TV ratings for the Women's World Cup

6M+ w/ streaming, w/ Fox averaging 5.2M.

Pac12 also has the most players on the team.

Seems like an opportunity to better monetize women's soccer for the Pac12/NCAA.
I'm calling bullshit.

There's some fuzzy math going on there. Obviously I have no way of proving or disproving it, that seems a little steep, especially for a 9pm eastern game.

Most of the adults I still know with whom my son & I went through youth soccer (since my son is now 28, that includes the kids) watched that game. One couple travelled and was at the game. I'm a pretty small sample and that is at least 20 viewers. Several people talked about the game at work. From my porthole view of the world, it was as big a deal as any Olympic soccer game. I find 6 million to be very believable. Soccer is very popular in SoCal, and we have 20-ish million people just living here. If you told me that 20-30% of the 6 million audience was here, I'd find that believable. Also note that Olympic and world cup broadcasts in the US are very time zone tolerant. Finally, at least here in SoCal, I'd put the women's soccer popularity on par with the men's. If we continue to win I think you will see even higher viewer numbers as the tournament progresses.

I found myself rooting against them the past few years. What a bunch of entitled jerks. They did have a couple of women who had some humility and femininity though.

Women's world cup typically draws strong ratings but it's a one hit wonder. I'll watch women's world cup of it's one and I've got nothing better to do. My wife will schedule time to watch if she remembers it's world cup. But she's not going to watch any other soccer over the next 4 years because she doesn't care. It would be like looking at beach volleyball ratings from the Olympics and concluding there was an opportunity for a league.

Rapino or however her name is spelled, while a great soccer player that works, plays hard, is a JERK, because she rubs things in, insults players, national teams, is disrespectful when she scores goal, when, how she celebrates after she scores goals.

That said a lot of the team is like Smith, Morgan, that play hard, well, are nice, respectful, etc.

About the 6 million viewers. When Mia Hamm and the soccer team won the world cup that help change everything.

Before the men beat Columbia and before the women won the cup, Spokane wasn't the only place where soccer started to get popular.

All across the country, soccer not only was getting more popular, but boys and girls, men and women were playing, getting better at soccer.

That's what fueled, made the men's, women's teams capable of beating Columbia, winning cup, and fueled the huge popularity of the world cup games in Dallas, etc.

And as much maligned MLS is, MLS also helped.

And FIFA, USA soccer, MLS, Concacaf, all launched brilliant, genius soccer marketing campaigns in USA.

Those marketing campaigns made soccer even more popular. Those campaigns combined with the Women's 4, FOUR World Cup Championships, combined with how women's soccer has become the most popular women's sport, only behind women's basketball, has made soccer extremely popular, behind only men's tackle football, basketball, and just barely behind baseball.

At the current trajectory, in about 7 to 15 to 23 years, if this continues, only Tackle football will be more popular and soccer will have passed baseball, and just barely tied, or behind basketball.

Soccer is a lot more popular, watched both in person, and on TV then people think.

MLS, FIFA, Concacaf, USA soccer, World Cup games, etc, games in the USA are averaging about 25k to 50k people attending. And all across the nation there are WATCH PARTIES, comparable to Superbowl Watch Parties.

If the women win a 3rd straight World Cup Championship, and if the Men make it to, are competitive in, getting to semi final, of World Cup, Soccer will EXPLODE in even more semi fanatical popularity, semi like Europe.

Soccer is HUGE in the USA now, and is getting BIGGER.

And that's why the 6 million number is not only believable, but very accurate, and will only get bigger and bigger as time goes on.

Almost every little girl in USA either admires or wants to become the next Mia Hamm, Morgan, Smith, legendary USA women's soccer players.

And lots of young boys either admire, want to become the next Dempsey, Colbi Jones, Donovan, Alexi Lalas, Freirria(Misspelled)(Don't know how name is spelled)(USA National Olympic,World Cup team player, that's new, about 23, goal scorer, thats breaking the goal scoring records)

And the marketing commercials have been brilliant.

Especially the "How going to stop USA soccer team/Morgan", commercials.

Especially the one where other nation's teams use a drone to spy on Morgan/Team, and Morgan kicks a soccer ball at the drone to break it, breaking the drone.

You need to take your "old white guy" glasses off on this one.

1. 45 million people here were born elsewhere.
2. Soccer has been the go to sport for kids, particularly girls, in suburbia for years.
3. Women have taken a lot of heat for not supporting women's sports. The World Cup is women's sports biggest stage. Watching it is seen as a duty in many circles.
4. Americans support winners and love "events." Look at F1 in Vegas (despites no one knowing who Max Verstappen is).
5. Men love watching quality competition, in anything, and the talent pool in the women's game has improved over the last decade.

Had FIFA put this tourne in the USA or the UK, instead of two grossly underpopulated countries, half way around the world, it would have received much more publicity and would be seen as a much big event. The 2015 final, aired in primetime from Canada, garnered 25.4 million viewers. That was better than all but 4 non-NFL games/sports events and more that the most watched NBA and MLB games. 76,900 attended the the most recent England vs USA "friendly" at Wembley. Sure it isn't as popular here, but this match up would still be a big draw here too.

Women's soccer, will draw the women and men to the TV. It's a sport both can get around.

Again, I think there is an opportunity to better monetize women's soccer from the Pac-12 perspective.
