Utah vs WSU game thread

At the end of the half Cannon pushed CJ to pickup Barefiled and did a nice job not allowing him a clean look.

Good half. A couple bad turnovers but only 4 overall. Elleby and Wade with no fouls.

Turn overs and bad defense, so typical.

Those two items are the most reflective of coaching and what is emphasized in practice. Ernie values shooting and playing fast more than anything. Which is totally weird considering he played for Dick Harter.

Ernie doesn't value ball possession whatsoever. His players know there's no consequence for trying to make the highlight play or being sloppy. There's also no consequence for being a matador on defense.

Pretty simple equation to success: Defend, take care of/share the ball, rebound. Ernie's teams aren't drilled to do this - which is why you see the performance ups and downs. They live and die by whether they can outshoot the opponent. Just go full-on Grinnell if that's going to be the case.

Interesting synopsis. i wonder if some of this is due to inexperience of the jucos and frosh. As one progresses at the collegiate level one realizes that each possession is important. That does not mean sloball as a face paced game with good shot selection and hustle on defense means good possessions. It is easy to lose track of a game on about 3-4 possessions and let a team suddenly have a double digit lead. We have seen this on several occasions this year.

Team played hard on D just as they did the prior 2 games. Tough to contain 3 hot shooters. Utah stepped on D on Franks, but nobody really really took over scoring

I don't know if the defense has reached the Arizona weekend again but I didn't see the Utah game as a step back to the previous defense. Utah was on fire and probably shot outside the scout. Probably should have adjusted but sometimes you run into a team that gets in a rhythm and not much is going to stop them. We let them have some clean looks but Barefield's shooting was bordering on ridiculous.

It seemed to me that turnovers were much more significant than defense. I in no way believe they only had 11 turnovers in that game.

Agree. Number of TOs may be right, but it seemed like more because of the strategic spots they occured in the 2nd half.

The ability to focus and deliver at key times has really hurt this team. The lack of a natural leader has hurt this team. Daniels tried but is just so limited as a player. He can shoot the three but is poor defensively and cannot drive the hoop.Franks ,to me,is the type of player who needs a Pg to motivate him and get on him to produce at key times. The need for a on court motivator is readily apparent on this team at crunch time..The question is whether one of the incoming players can be that person next year..There are players who need a boost to kick it up a notch

$1.4 Million per year doesn't include motivation?!?!

What's the ala carte purchase price for a motivator? Or is the free PG the best deal on the market today?

I'm gonna stop by McDonald's today and see whether 'fired up' is on the $1 Menu.

If they were robots, yes, 1.4 mil can motivate. I was at a bball party and one of the high school parents came over to me and asked me about the off season and AAU bball. I told him his kid is playing well in high school bball now because she finally rounded into shape, and she should do track or some other sport to stay in shape. He then proceeded to tell me because I help administer the AAU program I need to tell these kids they need to put up 100 shots per day and they need to train three days a week or they don't play for the AAU team.

I looked at him and laughed. Told him he wanted it way more than she did, and if she wants it she will do that on her own.

The moral of the story is some kids get it later than others, some never get it, and no matter how much you try and motivate it falls on deaf ears.

Anyone who has ever played basketball knows that some players can motivate on the court. They can make other players better.

Never coached, but in my experience coaches dont motivate, players motivate themselves

There was a recent article in the Daily News about Sampson's resurgence in Houston. I haven't had time to read it all but in one part he talked about building a family environment and how if you do the players will will run through a wall for you as a coach. I also remember a Few comment about not having as many "gym rats" they literally couldn't keep out of the gym.

I tend to think there are parts of both but agree with Ava that much of it comes down to the player.

Looks like the lede is getting buried here:

Let's get this straight: you are the local Paul Wullf/Jim Walden of a local AAU program?
Are you doing it the right way?
Teams better than 6-40, correct?
Coaches getting their 5th years, right?
Do you have a radio show?
Message board ?
Chartered flights?
Please tell us you are doing Bennett Ball in AAU!
Be careful for ever hinting "training table attendance is too high" , but track is always good advice.

I take it no desire to move past the Wulff years. Walden? No. I don't give my heart and soul to the program as he did, right or wrong.

Right way? Dumbest line I have ever heard anyone say, then and now. To repeat something that was said by a scorned coach 8 years later is unbelievable to me.

Don't coach so technically I don't have a record.

5 years to rebuild-sure. Unless you get an experienced coach. Should have hired Leach in 09 or 10.

Bennett Ball- defense wins championships.

Training table-yawn.
