After sleeping on the game last night, I don't believe that this season is going to be the utter disaster that a loss to PSU would normally mean. A game like that was not unusual during Leach's time at Tech and they often went on to win 8 games anyway. They lost to 2-10 Colorado in one instance in particular.

I believe that our defense (and coaches) were feeling a bit too good at halftime. PSU's coaches made adjustments and smacked us in the mouth after the half and scored. Our offense stalled out and our defense, already fragile, was on skates at that point. Just when it looked like the defense was starting to recover, Priester fumbles the punt and puts us behind. The offense starts to show life but at that point, the defense was just mentally shot.

Long story short, even though I don't believe we'll make a bowl game with the defense we have, we are still going to win a few games.

I guess I appreciate your optimism. But after sleeping on it, I still think everything is as bad as it seems.

I still wonder exactly how much the rain affected them. It sounds like an excuse..probably is one...but still it was awful weather and an awful game.

Would it be the same outcome on a normal day? Probably not.

The season isn't over after game 1, but given the way we played on defense and the fact that our starting QB is already injured, you can't blame any of our fans or the media for writing us off.

But winning cures everything. Steal a win at Rutgers, or even play well and lose, and we can steady the ship.

Yeah I'm pretty optimistic and I'm struggling with this.

Maybe Bender can step up.
Maybe this is the punch in the gut the team needed.

Overconfident, we played like crap. Maybe it is Rutgers' turn. They are wiping their brow right now, thinking what they thought would be a tough opponent (WSU), will be a push over. However, we couldn't stop PSU's running game, what chance do we have against a big physical team in hot humid weather? And we will be starting a freshman QB, who looked scared against PSU.

If you start your freshman Saturday, you better triple team Turay or he will have PTSD by the end of the game.

Everyone knew the attendance would be down - Labor Day weekend, some of the crappiest weather in recent memory, a perceived weak opponent. By halftime, the few who bothered to show up saw the same ineffective offense from the last six quarters of 2014, and a defense whose back 7 looked lost - some of it due to a lack of speed. So, like loyal Cougs from the past, they bailed, and went by the hundreds to RVs, the CUB, and cars soon headed to parts unknown. The players returned to a ghost town and became more like specters than tacklers.
This team will either rise or sink (further). If it rises, it will need some stellar play from a new quarterback, from talented athletes who can shake first-game jitters, and from coaches willing to shake up personnel and scheme.

Its pretty tough to envision us winning against Rutgers after yesterday's performance but a win would help right the ship a bit. I think Rutgers and Wyoming are now must win games. If we go out and get our mouth kicked in by Rutgers, a lot of our soft players are going to start feeling bad for themselves and the season might as well be over. We saw it last year with Rutgers and Nevada. I hope Leach figures something out because as much as I like him, and I was ecstatic when we hired him.... another 3-9 season (or worse) in year 4 just isn't going to cut it. At the end of the day the "improvement" in talent has to show in the the win column and other than one 6-7 season (which is looking more an more like a fluke) this team looks bad AND, if I'm being perfectly honest, it looks poorly coached.

the game reminded me alot of the snow bowl, when after halftime the huskies came out looking like they didn't want to back out in thaqt weather, we had that look yesterday

Exactly! I was going to go the other direction and say someone should show the entire team the snow bowl game and ask them if they think they gave as much as the team in '92. A team trying to get to a bowl game after 4 years. There were just as many kids from California/war weather climates on our roster that day and the weather yesterday wasn't nearly as bad.

Yup, we were much more like the husky's in the '92 AC. I saw Falk warming up on the sideline with some staff person. The receivers were probably under cover trying to stay dry.

It was as bad as the Japanese bombing Dresden and London too.

Why, though? Why is this the constant refrain from the Palouse? Always a reason, always an excuse. I'm sorry, but I just can't accept that any longer. Against a better opponent, maybe, but not PSU. PORTLAND-FRICKEN-STATE!

Lest anyone forget, I think I was the most conservative on this board by only giving the Cougs 21 pts. Most of the scores were in the 59-17 range on the prediction thread.
