WBB - Kamie Ethridge new head coach

Correction: This year they won the Big Sky and Big Sky Tournament with a 15-3 confoerence record. They beat Depaul, LSU, USF, and BYU in ooc play. Two years ago Northern Colorado finished 3rd in the Big Sky with a 14-4 record.

Ethridge was Associate HC at K-State from '96-14...so a long time. Before that at Vandy from '91-'96.

Who is she? Northern Colorado is not exactly a powerhouse name and plays lower division teams

Checked her out. she is a former Olympian who won a gold medal in the 1988 summer Olympics. She is a U of Texas graduate and had a solid coaching career at Northern Colorado. I think a solid choice and Northern Colorado terrain is much like Pullman A very good choice, all things considered. The players will respect her for her basketball history. Now she has to prove she can recruit top D1 talent to Pullman

She took Northern Colorado to it's first NCAA appearance this season. In her first they were able to get to the WNIT 3rd round.

Northern Colorado had a 23-6 record this past year.. She is also a two time AA point guard who was nominated for the WBB Hall of Fame. She may be a big step up from JD. She has the credentials and hopefully can elevate Molina s game. She was also known for her defensive basketball which may endear her to coug fans

They ended up 26-7 and had a 13 game win streak heading in the Tournament where they were a 10 seed in going up against Michigan. She would have been returning to a team with 3 starters back including the Big Sky player of the year.

Haven't checked their stats but seems they do force a lot of turnovers and shoot a lot of 3s.

She runs a camp every summer in Colorado around June or July and perhaps she can pull a couple of players there to play for the cougs . I may get excited about WBB in Pullman for the first time.

This seems like a solid hire. I'll give Chun credit here.

They lost to Michigan by 14 after being down at half by 17. In the second half they basically played 5 guards with the tallest listed at 5-9. The adjustment was good on offense but they couldn't handle Michigan's length inside and really just in general on both ends.

They are a motion offense, lots of screens, cuts to the basket, but they really seem to want to get looks from 3. I think we had more talent than they did last year but also think they would have handled us. They don't seem to beat themselves and their players have good basketball IQ. I think Molina and Hristova will fit a lot of what Ethridge does at least offensively.

This does look like a solid hire from what I have found but interested to hear comments from others who are tuned in.

She was inducted into the WBB hall of Fame in 2002.As i have said before ,she is a very good hire. The majority of fans here do not really care about WBB. I am hoping she can re recruit a player like Brown who would flourish in her system. If not, then she probably has plenty of contacts and an improved league to offer recruits.

The U of Texas had an undefeated season one year 34-0 with her leading the team. I remember her as a fiery competitor who seemed to play beyond her talent level. I did not know her but watched her play as i did not like anything Texas and it was disappointing when they won the title. i wonder why it took her so long to become coach of a major university program? She has the knowledge, basketball experience and probable contacts to be at the head of a P5 program. I hope she can start a good program and it all starts with recruiting.

I watched a lot of basketball in my time. I saw the games and remember the games and some of the players. We were not "best friends" but i have see many players and remember games. The name is /was not important at that time.I do remember how players looked ,so excuse me if i did not remember her name. But it is like remembering Connecticut's wins and losses in the NCAA title games ,i remember the players,i remember Tennessee s Pat Summit but i do not remember the player s names. Do you remember the Kentucky game with UTEP long ago. I remember Pat Riley but do not remember the rest of " mighty midgits" as i believe they were called. UTEP s team i can do better with with as i had followed them as a very young boy, So yes i remember her play if not the name.

Not sure we could have hired a coach with better credentials, seems like a very good hire. I csnt remember her but she must have played with Moscow idaho’s Andrea Loyd while at Texas. Color me impressed with Chun’s first hire.

With all the time she spent at Kansas State, I wonder if President Schultz played a big role in her hire?

Also, I like Northern Colorado's men's basketball coach as well. If Ernie is let go after next season, maybe take a look at Coach Linder. Thought he was going to get the Colorado State job. His team won the College Invitational Tournament this year. Maybe not a big deal, but at least they got into the post season.

Glad Cougar

I am sure that she will do that. However,.I think that it will be her way or the highway for those players

Interesting back story on Kansas State. Wonder if Ethridge will bring Deb Patterson with her. Or maybe UNC will promote her. Oh and the player ended up at Florida State after winning her release.

Other familiar names like Schultz and John Currie.

Ethridge was and Assistant under Patterson at Vandy and K-State. I can't imagine unless Patterson did take over that she wouldn't continue on her staff in some capacity. Isn't that Patterson in the background of the Rivals photo of Ethridge?

This hire is reviving my interest in our WBB team. June always seemed to do a great job on the recruiting trail but for some reason it never really translated to an equal amount of success on the court.

I see where she was an assistant coach for the National U18 and U 19 teams.Hopefully, some of these elite players will remember her and be recruitable. I suspect her teams will show more fire and drive than JD s teams did. I want to see if she will bring her staff with her? I also think that if any others of the current team were thinking of leaving, they will now opt to stay. Kami seems to be a veritable legend in women s basketball.

She sort of reminds me of Bone. Lots of nice wins in the 4 years, and a NCAA berth as well. But it will all come down to recruiting Pac-12 level players. So the staff makeup will be fairly critical.

Like that they had a couple of NZ players and think that she will be strong in Texas and there are many nice players from there. Think a bit of a different slant on things will be a nice change for the women and the fans.

Immediately looked at the roster yesterday and saw a couple from New Zealand (1 a starter as a soph and 1 in the rotation as a frosh). Hopefully international recruiting doesn't dry up and interesting to see if she can draw Pac 12 talent from Texas.

Recruiting is definitely the key but there's some talent left in the program. Molina and Hristova really should work in the type of offense she had at UNC. While they seemed more disciplined she also seems to give her players a lot of freedom. Whether she connects with the returning group is key to getting off to a good start next season plus finding at least a couple more players to add to what they return. Is it 7 or 8? I haven't seen Shelley in workout photos.

The latest Molina -- Cherilynn is the "real" deal. You're right Shelley doesn't appear on the roster any longer either. Usually that is "grades" like the other Hawaiian guard Cameron who was gone. But I haven't heard anything about Shelley.

New bio for Coach Ethridge is up on the official site.

Pretty excited to see the youngest Molina and definitely she should fit as well. So there's talent to work with if we can quickly find a big or 2 to go along with what we have coming back. Essentially we lost our top 2 returning PFs, are starting Center, and a redshirting big. That's a lot to replace for a new coach. Subasic can shoot but she doesn't move the best and either does Kostoukova.

You have to work pretty hard to not make it to the spring of your freshman year.

As one can see, they have instant respect for her due to her basketball background as a player and coach. If she can recruit good players to Northern Colorado, she can recruit better players to WSU. She was a firebrand as a player. I remember her as the kind of player i hated to play against. I remember her as player who never gave up and gave 100 % effort during the whole game.Pugnacious is the best word i can think of. to describe her demeanor on the court. Some of her team mates were more talented physically but she was the leader and "the straw that stirred the drink" One can be sure that she will not expect anything less than 100% from her players as a coach. That will be a welcome improvement.

Well she certainly has her work cut out for her - needs to get right on the recruiting trail. Just 8 players on the roster including the only signee for next year (so far).

I see that one of her assistants, Laurie Koehn, has said goodbye to the NC players on twitter so assume she is probably coming along.

Interesting on Koehn.

Found a youtube of Koehn making 132 out of 135 3-point shots in 5 minutes. I wonder if Kelly Moylan is in line to take over at UNC but she is 7th all-time in 3-point shooting percentage at K-State. Sounds like the staff is still coming together but we are obviously going to want to shoot 3s.

Kamie will do good things. She knows basketball and was a great player as well. If I remember right her and Kim Mulkey played against one another with fiery determination.
