Smith is a great coach. He's already surpassed Ernie's win total last year with less and we have 13 more games left to play. Three more wins are we clinch the first .500 season since Bone was able to do it with Bennett's guys.

I figured Smith was a good hire, but he's doing something special.

Just needs to recruit and weeks like this are going to really help especially with butts-in-seats today!

4-14 in conference and 11-21 overall last year. This year 3-3 and 12-7 so far. There really is only one hater and he is proving he doesn't know much about sports.

Need one more win to avoid 20 loss season.

Swept Oregon schools for season.

Last time both men's & women's hoops teams had winning seasons in same year was when Harold Rhodes and Kevin Eastman were coaching.

It looks like he has already recruited
What is amazing is that freshman Williams and Rodman both played significant minutes. They both are going to be good in my opinion. I also think Rapp is going to be very good. I wouldn't be surprised if Markovetskyy turns out to be really good once he gets stronger and his basketball skills develop.

For such a short recruiting period, they evaluated and recruited well. This doesn't even count Bonton who has improved by leaps and bounds this season.

The first class has been impressive. Bonton has evolved into a pretty special player and before he was injured Tony Miller went from walk-on to starter. Williams, Rapp, and Rodman weren't on the radar of any other Pac 12 (or P5) and they all can play. I think Markovetskyy will contribute down the line but it's just going to take more time for the big guy.

That's the key and huge for us. To be able to evaluate and project is what made the Sweet 16 team so good. We have that in Smith/staff.

They play so damn hard. They gave up 40 in the first, but locked it down in the second half. OSU got some garbage points, but they got stops and push the lead to double digits. OSU made a little run and then they shut the door on them. Oregon State isn’t bad. They’re a bubble team, but they’re getting after it. If shots are falling like this then we’re gonna be tough to beat.

I’ll take full credit for challenging Bonton’s manhood. :).

I just like the fact they defend and take care of the ball. Neither of which had any priority under El’s idol.

What’s sad is that he, and so many people, have such a hard time admitting they may have been wrong.

Most, if not all Cougar fans would be excited and complimentary of this young group of hard working kids and the coach who has instilled hope back into the program. But for a few folks, it seems to be more important to be right & have the Cougars struggle than it is to be wrong and have the team to show some success. I'm just glad Chun was able to identify the right guy for the job and didn't waste any more time on a coach who was simply killing the program.

Glad Cougar

What a great idea for an off-season thread! What coaches (players?) were you wrong on?

If you figured early on that Len Stevens sucked, you had no business not figuring out Paul Wulff early on. Same approach: hostile takeover of program by unqualified meathead coach.

Thought Eastman would "finish out" better than he did (i.e. have better season records in last couple years, not the bottom). Lots of Top 25 wins in first 3 years. Gotta recruit.
Not surprised Bone failed (Knew "We're going to recruit Seattle with a Romar lite approach" wasn't going to work). Big surprise he wasn't that good at X's and O's despite reputation.

I was wrong on Mike Harthun, thought he would be a real good player for the Cougs. Unfortunately, I was right on the mark with Paul Graham and Ernie Kent, although neither should have been a surprise to anyone. For coaches of other sports, I was wrong about Marty Lees in baseball. I was fairly confident he would succeed or at least do no worse than Donnie Marbut. After all, he was once the heir apparent to Pat Casey at OSU. I failed miserably at that prediction.

Glad Cougar

We fans have limited information. We are not in the room interviewing the candidate. We are not talking to coworkers. Sometimes you make a logical and correct hire, and it just doesn't work out. Sometimes you make a bad hire based on other things.

Yeah Lees too for same reasons - but local talent is garbage (multiple reasons) and will be for another 10 years (at least). Baseball & softball participation is up nationally but not for teens. Bobo had some good demographics working his way and to his credit didn't screw it up.

Glad, you're not the only one that was wrong about Lees. I and, I would wager, many others were too. The one thing that keeps me nervous about Green is that I am as impressed with his resume as I was about Lees'.

For a guy who only had a roster of three players not long ago, his accomplishment has been remarkable. Others have mentioned recruiting and I would suggest that he has shown an ability to identify talent already. A first year success would go miles in attracting that talent.

One thing I noted while watching the school video was students pumped and standing in line. When was the last time we saw that outside Beasley? Would be great to see good crowds of students at future games and a winning atmosphere will achieve that. Hopefully, no more crowds numbering in the hundreds.

I am super impressed with Smith and the way he has this team playing ball. I don't think I watched a single game under Kent..and tuned out under bone. Been watching the womens' team instead. They are fun to watch..and so is this bunch.

Haters...Plural? Who would these "haters" be? And if I put the one hater as you call him in a police line-up of 12 Cougs you wouldn't be able to pick him out. He is like santa claus, some person with an opinion that posts under a fake name.

Personally I have no focus on what El said and am more excited about what the school did yesterday, getting to the game, having a great ceremony, and having a player who is truly grateful for his experience in Pullman, and I wish we could turn back time and have him available in the crucial UCLA game.

But I am glad Chun saw the value in retiring his jersey, and it had to be a great experience for those in attendance.

Posting opinions? Certainly okay. Posting insults and name calling? Childish.

Just think what this guy could do with a true center and two guys who could shoot consistently.

It's coming.

Figured you'd come to the defense of a troll. Birds of a feather...

On the subject of the team, how surprising has Bonton's arrival been. The guy didn't look capable of holding his own against our weak non-conference schedule. He's been absolutely nails in conference play. His shooting percentage is up to a decent level, too.

Daron Hensen's unwillingness to develop and offensive game beyond shooting threes has been a surprise. I thought he could be a focal point for the offense.

Hmmm... I was defending his position ? Interesting . No I think El saw like I did a three game stretch under Kent that said maybe they can play, which went by the wayside . He may not believe in Smith. From what I have seen Smith is very good . I won’t defend his argument but will always defend his right to make it , even if it is the dumbest position around. Same with you Yaki I will defend your ability to state a case .

As to Bone winning with Bennett’s players it sure would have been nice to have back to back winning seasons with Tony’s players , but two left early to play or try to play professionally , and it would have been nice if Harthun Brown, Simons , Witheril were Pac 10 players and stayed around . Such is life .

Speaking of Bone...I am glad they

He was basically Frank’s-lite. He can definitely shoot with range but apparently doesn’t do much else. I hope he figures it out because we could use another forward with Miller out. He seems like a good guy so maybe he’s simply not a fit.

Ryan Murphy’s having a good year with Pitt but I don’t think he would have been a fit ball handling and maybe defense.
