WSU Vs EWU at spokane arena

Right before Christmas.

https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2020/jun/05/washington-state-eastern-washington-set-for-first-/

and games the next 2 years in Pullman.

Sure there is not much to be gained by playing EWU but I really like this. Spokane is a basketball town and not everyone is in love with the Zags. I envision a nice crowd which will give WSU the opportunity to earn some fans for their program.
The New Mexico State game in Spokane drew 1220

That is half the average in Pullman even when removing the Klay Thompson 10k spike and the Apple Cup.

Programs facing large deficits shouldn't be subsidizing Bobby Brett

Awesome from an attendence perspective. Hopefully they heavily market it and get some butts in the seats. If we get CJ back, I think this will be a fun team to watch. Maybe even fun enough to raise our attendence for other games.

The attendance at that game was a bit of a surprise. It was at 11 am and poorly promoted but I’ve been to a lot of the Spokane games the past 10 years and they have been better than a lot of the Pullman games from an actual butts in the seats perspective. Getting the alums and neutral basketball fans excited about WSU hoops, even if it’s semi casual is a good thing.

If it’s not at 11 AM I’d bet there will be at least 6k at this game. If it’s in Pullman over Christmas it would draw 1500 Actual butts in the seats max.

Things to note is WSU bigtiming EWU with the same 2 for 1 deal as Gonzaga gave us. Not at all in agreement with this. We should just play them home-and-home. They draw as well as we do if you discount the WSU students.

The arena is so yuk but we seem to do well there.

We haven't been a very good program for several years now (although I think that's changing under Smith), but WSU is still a Pac-12 program in a Power 5 conference and I see no reason why we shouldn't expect a 2-for-1 deal with a Big Sky program. I don't think it equates with a powerhouse team like Gonzaga working something out with a Pac-12 program like us. But that's just my opinion.

Glad Cougar

IDK if it's the same either. Consider back in the Raveling days we would play Gonzaga in Spokane every year at least once. I'm sure it helped our budget with a short ride for a game but it helped GU a lot more than it did us. EDIT: Sampson lost his first year in the Spokane arena. My understanding is Sampson wanted to stop playing in just the Spokane Arena because it wasn't really neutral. Regardless, we stepped away and came back under Eastman in the '95/'96 season.

We also continue to play Idaho on their floor and that goes back to the days when Idaho was pretty good under coaches like Don Monson, Tim Floyd, Larry Eustachy, and Kermit Davis. For whatever reason there hasn't been consistent history with EWU and they are having a hard time getting ooc games. Long story longer I think this is a bit different than the GU thing.

With some serious budget crunches coming it makes More sense for WSU to pay Eastern for a “body bag” game than it does to pay New Mexico Bible College if you’re a tax payer in this state

WSU doing a 2 for 1 with EWU, where EWU/WSU plays in Spokane Arena 1 game, and then AFTER that, EWU, SUPPOSEDLY plays 2 games in Pullman.

GOOD:

1. Could, should in theory be a good, semi challenging, semi cupcake game, that WSU should semi easily win.

2. Cuts cost.

3. Gives more cougs a easier chance to be at the game.

4. Since Spokane likes EWU, it should be well attended.

BAD:

1. Since it is:

A. In Spokane.

B. Spokane loves EWU.

C. EWU has had/is a semi good team, that has produced drafted pro star, RODNEY STUCKNEY, etc, has gone to NCAA tourney's, NIT's, CBI's, CIT's

D. About 53% of the Spokane game attendee's, are likely to be EWU fans.

THEN:

There is about a 33% to 35% to 37% to 39% to 43%
, etc, chance that they win vs WSU.

2. EWU may, might not do the Pullman games. I can see the negotiation going something like this:

WSU: We want you EWU to pay a sum of Money, if you don't do the Pullman games.

EWU: No we shouldn't. Things legitly come up that can prevent attendence. And you WSU are the Body Bag game for us, EWU, so you should be paying us, EWU. Plus your lucky to be able to beat a cupcake like us.

WSU: You should feel lucky to play WSU where you at least have a chance, although not a good chance to win. After all we could go with someone else.

EWU: Then you can go with someone else because we will just go with another Body Bag Team, that would be just as good for us, as WSU would be.

EWU: Either you trust us that we will attend the Pullman game, unless something legit comes up, so you can either take it or leave it.

WSU: We'll grudgingly take that.

Then after the Spokane Game, win or lose, EWU doesn't do the 2 Pullman games, and comes up with a legit, valid excuse for not attending the 2 Pullman games.

This deal is awesome for EWU, and gives EWU a awesome, best chance to beat WSU, in the Spokane game, in Spokane, in front of EWU fans, with a chance that they might have a way, to not had to then play WSU in Pullman.

Reece Pavilion is actually a really nice place to watch a basketball game. It's 45 years old - watched the high school all state game there in 1976 featuring Terry Kelly, all the Cleveland High studs, Steve Madsen from Tacoma. But the sightlines are great, it actually holds quite a few people and EWU is competitive. It wouldn't be an easy W thats for sure. '

I'd have rather seen a 2 Pullman, 1 EWU, 1 Arena schedule just to avoid the GU big-timing stink. Even 1-1-1 would have been fine by me.

I go to Reece on occasion to watch a game and its actually quite a nice facility. I agree.
