Pac-12 officially moving on from commissioner George Kliavkoff

Jon WilnerFeb. 13, 2024 at 2:12 pm
The Pac-12 has begun the process of separating from commissioner George Kliavkoff, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The move has been anticipated since the Pac-12 collapsed on Aug. 4, when five schools bolted for other leagues after Kliavkoff failed to negotiate a satisfactory media rights contract.

Kliavkoff reports to the Pac-12 board of directors, made up of the presidents of the two remaining schools, Washington State’s Kirk Schulz and Oregon State’s Jayathi Murthy.

Under the terms of a court order, Schulz and Murthy are required to notify the 10 departing schools of any board action.

Few details are available at this point, including whatever severance package might be in line for Kliavkoff, who was hired in the spring of 2021.

Less than three years later, the 12-team conference he inherited is down to two members.

The other 10 will join new leagues this summer.

Kliavkoff’s contract is believed to have at least two years remaining with an expected salary of approximately $3.5 million annually, based on data from the Pac-12’s tax filings for the 2022 fiscal year.

According to a mediated settlement between the two remaining schools and the outbound 10, conference liabilities are considered a shared expense. Kliavkoff’s contract seemingly would fit under that category.

The Pac-12 office released the following statement in response to a request for comment:

“The Pac-12 Conference Board has given the departing 10 schools notice of a proposed leadership transition with an invitation to provide comment. We expect to provide more information following a decision in the coming days.”

That “transition” seemingly will include the appointment of a replacement for Kliavkoff.

Teresa Gould, the Pac-12’s deputy commissioner, is well respected by the schools and considered a likely option — not only as an interim commissioner through the spring but perhaps to manage a scaled-down version of the conference for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.

WSU and OSU plan to operate as a two-team conference in football, under the Pac-12 banner, for the next two seasons; their basketball teams and many Olympic sports will be housed in the West Coast Conference.

By the fall of 2026, the ‘Pac-2’ must expand, or the Pac-12 will no longer be recognized as an official conference.

C'mon Moxee - scan the board before you post the same info as M-I. Except not as good because no detail.

That whipping done, about G-D time. I like this presumption that any settlement with Quackkoff would be split 12 ways with the traitorous 10. Hah Hah assholes (if true).

So that is good from a money standpoint and a negotiating standpoint. OK George, two options - either we fire you for cause and you take your chances in court, or we negotiate a reduced settlement that we only have to pay 2/12 of (us and OSU that is). Now a downside - if firing for cause drags out past Aug. 2 and we lose, then are we on the hook for the whole thing? All the more reason why we should have done this months ago.

On his replacement. Teresa Gould, who I had never heard of, is the obvious and mentioned choice to succeed Quacky. BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE INTERIM OR ACTING ONLY. For starters, she needs to be vetted thoroughly in terms of her behavior over the last year or so. Next, Gloria Navarez (Mtn West) needs to be our next permanent commissioner, whether it be eventually via the reverse merger or just a straight hire. The latter has some potential benefits, frankly. She can turn around and negotiate the merger with lots of Mtn West knowledge in hand.

Teresa's first job as interim needs to be to gut the Pac-12 staff (see link below, scroll down for pictures). Most of these people are not needed. Keep all the women, (see pictures - especially Heather and Anna) and get rid of most of the rest. Plus, and sorry for these folks, much of the non-leadership staff. Make sure to conduct pre-layoff interviews to search for anyone with mud on Quacky. Keep any of them.

We posted about the same time and when I hit the post reply, it was there. Still thanks for the critique of my post, it was most needed

Ahh, just ribbing ya buddy. And no, he beat your post by 7 minutes. :)

Kind of surprised by the lack of replies. Everyone is at the dinner table I guess.....

Thanks for the link Moxee!

Good call Loyal. You predicted a while back Klaitkoff would be fired

Wonder if the last 12 months would've been any different if Larry Scott was still running the conference?

Yahoo! Sports has this article. Doesn't really tell us more than we already know, but social media responses at the end of the article are interesting to read through.

Yahoo! Sports

While many of us have considered that Kliavkoff should be terminated with cause for trying to arrange a PAC-12 board meeting with all 12 schools after the conference collapsed to 2 schools, what about:

* Was Kliavkoff involved in negotiating OSU's and WSU's football schedule with the MWC in 2024?

* Was Kliavkoff involved in negotiating the PAC-2's two year association with the WCC?

I don't follow you. He had better have been involved - that is kind of his job. Doesn't change a thing about what he did (or didn't do) before.

As Elson was a friend and the biggest advocate for the retention of Larry "Women's Tennis" Scott (Death knell #1) and Kirk openly advocated for hiring George (death knell #2), I hope we don't hire anyone. As two independants, effectively, we don't need anyone, we are a conference on paper only. If the chance arises to reconstitute the conference in the future, we should abstain on the issue, since we have proven that we don't have any idea what the hell a good commissioner takes. On the other hand, we know exactly who to hire if you want to implode a conference.

Sad, but true!

I don't know much about firing someone for cause. That said, it seems like to fire Kliavkoff with cause (to save money), we'd want to dig up all the dirt we can. And if Kliavkoff was of no value in helping Oregon St. & Washington St. obtaining temporary conference affiliations for the next 2 years, then that failure would be added to the pile of dirt.

It wouldn’t hurt to have more, but a single action or set of actions that demonstrate an inability/unwillingness to perform job duties, or that show poor judgement that causes a lack of trust in the same…can be cause for termination. Even if he’s done good things before and after.

I think that Gk “knowingly and willingly” (key terms) disregarded and violated conference policy to the likely detriment of its members. That’s cause. No more should be needed. WSU and OSU should have zero faith in his ability or allegiance going forward.

Ok, here is how Loyal Coug, Esq. would proceed. Since I don't have a DeLorean to go back in time, I immediately (like Feb 15) Tell Quack that he's fired for cause. Get out today, give us your keys, phone, whatever, here's a box. IT do your thing. I've seen people escorted out of the building by Security (at WSU no less) after being fired. Draconian, but sometimes necessary. I bet $5 he is in his office as we speak shredding papers and deleting e-mails and texts and phone messages. He should have been out of there. Another very dumb non-move by the Pac-2.

Then, we have a lawsuit on our hands. OK, we immediately get with Quack and attorneys. Share our reasoning/evidence, let that sink in. quickly interview every Pac-12 and Pac-12 network employee to search for dirt. No dirt, no job pretty soon (figure out how to communicate that without saying it). Maybe he was boinking someone. Oh and find out who else needs to be let go right away (layoffs, get the clock started on notice requirements).

Then - OK Quack, let's negotiate something much less than whatever your full payout is. The traitorous 10 will be all in - less payout for them. Maybe they have dirt to share on Quack.

Worst case? Before Aug 2 we say OK Quack, here's your payout, we are on the hook for 1/12 each. Best case? Probably a reduced payout depending on the dirt.

Pretty simple.

Sounds good. But I’m not worried about him deleting e-mail. If it’s been sent, it’s on a server that he can’t delete himself.

And, there’s already enough on the public record to create cause. Anything else is just gravy.

OK. So WTF are we waiting for?
