Watched Kelvin Sampson win his 200th last night. Seems that this retread coach unlike our current coach has got a new practice facility, new arena, and wins a lot.

To watch good basketball again....and to think he and Kent were both hired in the same year back in 2014.

Watched part of Houston against Wichita State. Tough and hard nose teams that defend. Exactly the kind of approach I would like to see in Pullman.

Helps when you have a billionaire donor that wants so bad to be in the Big 12 that he builds all the facilities.

I thought of Kelvin too back in '14, but he always was a cheater. Even when he was at Wazzu he was cheating. He was always dirty. Took our recruits when he went to OU and kept on cheating. Finally got show caused for it. He's doing well in Houston, but you can't trust that he isn't going get you into trouble.

I still remember when he tried to get Hendrickson and Fontaine to follow him to OK. Also, not commenting on his coaching now, but he couldnt win big games at WSU. He blew more double digit half time leads than I can count. I still remember when he had Eddie Hill on the bench in the closing seconds against Boston College forcing Tony Harris to put up a 3 pointer that clanked off. I think he blew a 10 point lead in that one too.

Give us a team of three and four star recruits and you can win with hard nosed defense. You won't win with defense if your players are less athletic than your opponents anymore. The game is rigged in favor of the offense now.

There was a time when WSU was able to win by running the 4 corners offense too. Won't work now either.

Sampson went after pretty much every good player on the roster. Hendrickson, Fontaine, Daniels, and of course Erdmann and Abercrombie. The way he went after the WSU job was backhanded. He was an ambitious guy who obviously didn't mind cutting corners off the court. He demanded a lot from his players and we seemed to wear down through conference play. I'll never forget Fontaine at the line to seal a win against Arizona miss free throws and simply looked worn down.

With Sampson though we may have seen mistakes and teams give up leads but we were prepared. There was a plan and vision that gave us a chance to compete after his first few years. That's the approach we obviously need.

The point isn't to exactly replicate the past. You have to change with the times but you can't just give up one end of the court.

Imo you guys are comparing WSU to teams at the top of the college basketball world. You are right we can’t compete with teams that consistently get four and five star players on a level playing field. Those players are often one and done or gone after their sophomore years. We need to be playing with seniors and juniors who are more physically mature and have several years experience behind them. There are only a certain number of four and five star players out there but there are plenty of teams who are very successful using three star guys coupled with solid defense and offensive systems not based on the NBA.
