Here is Coach Wilson's answer, per his twitter:

99% of Football Teams run 3-4 and 4-3 defenses! So the answer to the question R U a 3-4 or 4-3 Scheme; is Yes! Just Clearing up Confusion!

Maybe the question should be... "Are you good at coaching both schemes to kids that can only learn one or the other?"

Different body types...

and you better have a linebacker who can flat out put the QB on his back.

Getting Destiny in the open field for example as linebacker dropping the open field doesn't seem like the best use of talent.

And those that paid attention in 2013 saw that Vaeao was the buck for the early part of the season to match up against Auburn and USC.

As Gib notes, Destiny was the buck for Auburn and USC. That turned out to be a good decision, since Auburn was breaking in a new QB/offense and USC was coached by a meathead. Both tried to win the game by running, and if that is what you are going to do, Destiny as the buck made perfect sense.

On the other hand, as Ed suggests, against a passing team (or even a running team that can pass competently) I can think of other strategies that are more likely to pay dividends.

Others may disagree, but personally I think it is in general easier to recruit to a 4 man front than a 3 man front. DE types are plentiful, and you need essentially the same DT's either way. The nose can effectively be played by a short DT if he is built correctly, and that widens the field a bit, but the guys with the right personality don't grow on trees. If we were not so well suited to recruit Poly players, I would think that a 4 man front would be an easy choice. But when coach Joe can bring in a legitimate nose candidate every year, the 3-4 starts to look a lot more realistic.

This year, Grinch is playing with the cards he has been dealt. I find the question of whether he chooses to go with 4 or 5 DB's to be very interesting, and I look forward to seeing what situations he chooses to address with a nickel.

Amen! This topic has been beat to death and it's silly. There used to be a big difference between 3-4 and 4-3 defenses, now most teams run a combination with a number of players capable of playing with their hand in the dirt or upright. To have long discussions about what your philosophy is in this regard is pretty pointless. You put your best front seven on the field and rotate fresh bodies according to game situations.

There ya go. Btw, I recall a d-coordinator at WSU who had his linebackers and DBs dropping 40 yards back when all Montana needed was a couple of short passes to get in position for the game-winning field goal. Now, there was a "best use of talent."
