Smith has a lot of spots to fill in the next month. Decided to put up a thread for how we might fill these spots up.

1. Ball Handler: A Pierre Cockrell, Scottie Pippen Jr or Caleb Grill seems to fit the bill here
2. Combo Guard: seems like they are after Rayquan Evans and David Jenkins Jr for this spot.
3. JC/grad transfer big man: Matt Freeman is in the mix here. Possibly more
4. High School Big man: Kuany Kuany will probably verbal over the weekend.
5. HS 3/4: Ronnie Degray
6. A true center: Not sure who were are looking for here, but Nigel John is the archetype.
7. If Hensen bugs out, they probably need another JC big to round out the squad.

They may want to have a short roster year one. You don't want too many kids who aren't helping, but then again people are transferring once they see the writing on the wall so maybe that isn't the problem it has been in the past.

Especially with the trend of players transferring mid year, I wouldn't go into a season with less than 13 scholarship players. Last year's team had 12, Chidom transferred and when we had a couple of injuries we were pretty thin.

Pippen committed to Vanderbilt in January.

The women struggled all year after losing 3 transfers and not able to fill spots. You don't want to add dead weight to the program though and APR can complicate things as well. It's one thing to fill the last couple of spots with a Jackie Davis or Trevor Dunbar but you obviously are in trouble if you bring in a couple of classes with that kind of talent.

Kuany would be a great start. Not only does he look to have a lot of upside but he's Australian and played at a talented high school in Prolific Prep.

He is actually from Kenya. But, he has lived many countries, including Australia.

They would all be good gets for one reason or another. Good start in terms of the interest the Smith/staff have generated.

R Evans just committed to Florida State, Caleb Grill looks to be headed to Kansas state. Pierre Cockrell is from the Western part of the state and Smih just dumped a couple of coaches from that area.More on Kuany but let s see what he does.

To be honest 4-14 losing your best player and losing to the likes of Montana State, Santa Clara . Sometimes good guys and even good coaches get blown out .

True but i said he was good guy. It seems like some people took umbrage with me for saying that. So the onslaught against Kent s coaches continues even after they are history. The recruits Smith has brought in and are currently recruiting are recruits contacted by the old staff. They have not seemingly generated any new real interest so far. We will see how the Kuany recruiting works out. Kuany was directed and strongly encouraged by one of his advisors ro consider WSU. That advisor is a close friend of Ed Haskins Opps..?? But maybe the promise of instant playing time may turn him to WSU no matter how he was lured to Pullman?Pullman is a great college town and i have recommended it for graduate studies to my son. To be honest i would not recommend it to any prospective basketball player I did recommend a top woman basketball recruit who choose another college but is now ranked among the top 50 women basketball players in the nation. So i will continue to support WSU academically as it is a great place to go to college.

Thanks for ALL you do.

You are more than welcome. But please do not shoot the messenger. It is funny but now people are crying about the "transfer culture" as the body count continues to mount.

I think it is ok for players to transfer from a 11th place finish team. El C I must say you fascinate me. You get upset at people that are ok with players leaving and wanting Kent to be gone so they can hope someone else can resurrect the program. I don't disagree at this point we have the word hope and nothing more. With Dick B there was a plan and an almost guarantee by past performance he was going to get it turned around.

And what is shocking the empathy you have for Kent and you would call a great guy (but unsuccessful in Pullman) Bonehead.

Just saw on brandx that Smith/WSU is interested in: https://247sports.com/college/washi...cruiting-Davidson-Washington-State-131263135/

He wants to be like Klay Thompson.

Kent got off to a bad start we when he totally whiffed on his first class. Ehile nobody blamed him due to the late start he got the fact remains that it put us in a bad hole. The problem was compounded when he loaded up on JC kids in his second class. 2 of them couldnt play, and one didnt fit his system at all.

Not sure how Smiths first class will look, but Kent didnt set a very high bar.

Well his supporters have already corona ted Smith. By any measure he has had a mediocre coaching career and i cannot see him improving on that. But his analytics and" nerdball" are going to be put to the test. The 12.6 million dollar man will have to earn his keep. Ed you make no secret of your friendship with Bone i think that Kent is his career as a coach and broadcaster easily surpass the Bonehead whether you like it or not.We know that Kent s coaching career is over. What say ye on Bone?

Bone is down at Pepperdine and they seem to have things headed in the right direction . You are overstating my friendship with Bone. We have common friends. I know him, we are not close but I do hope he has success .

Do you think that Bone will ever take his team as head coach to the Elite Eight? Do you think that Bone with his blase personality ever get a job as TV basketball commentator?. Kent and Bone are long gone and i will just comment on the nerdball's actions as the head coach of the cougs.

A couple things... I think right place right time yeah he would have been capable (past tense). If your question at 60 will be get the opportunity ? No. Matter of fact he was on the bench when Gonzaga was in the final game several years ago.

Tv job? Probably not his thing. But you are misjudging the book by its cover. Don’t take his monotone delivery as blasé . Bone has a very quick wit. In terms of delivery and facade he isn’t all that different than Mark Few.

If it somehow makes you feel better Bone sucked worse than Kent . Does that bring either back or make their tenure successful ?

Still waiting for Kent yo get to 500. Elite 8 is ancient history, and clearly not germaine to any current analysis.

Freeman out of the picture. Apparently he gave his verbal to power house UCSB. It is hard to attract good recruits with a mediocre coach and poor facilities. No big loss as he is a marginal PAC 12 player. Perhaps Williams will verbal but he is at least two years away from being a productive PAC 12 player.

Emmanuel Ugboh a 611 juco to whom Smith tended a late offer has committed to iowa.No gibberish just straight talk.

Your right, it is hard to attract good recruits with a mediocre coach! Which explains the ErnieKent years to a tee!!! I have a novel idea.. how about we allow the guy to coach a year and see what we think, rather than knock the guy down before he has even coached a single game!! One of the things about smith that I’m most excited about is that you already hate him. We all know your basketball knowlege is border line zero based on the fact that everything you ever post has been wrong! “Ernie Kent won’t get fired” “Hawkinson is not deserving of a D1 scholarship” “ Aaron Cheatum will be a starter from day one” “Andy Van liet is an NBA talent” “Devonte Cooper will be an instant impact player” “TONY BENNETT can’t coach and will go out of the tourney early” based on your track record we should be in the final four next year.

Kent offered Ugboh, not Smith.
Yup, I hadn’t seen anything from Smith on the 5 or 6 JC centers Kent offered during the season. Ugboh looked like the one with the most upside though but not sure he was a fit for Smith. I think they want centers with skill shooting and passing.

Yup you are right basketball powerhouse Tulsa is Ugboh s pick. The recruiting is not going well so people like Joudand will be excited to see nerdball next year. i still see maybe 3 more possible losses from the squad. Hell start scouting the pick up gym games or the early intramural and greek, not the Nation for players next year.

I see no reason to be negative about coach Smith before he has even put a class together, a team together, and we see his product on the court. The guy deserves our support, just like we supported Kent when he took over the program. So far from what I can see, Smith seems to be much more selective with whom he wants to bring into the program, recruits that fit his system, and are multi-tooled players. He has picked up interest from quite a few good looking recruits, types that we rarely got a sniff from when Kent was running the show. I see some positives already with Smith's presence in the program.

I used to respect your contributions to this forum. I appreciated that you were still positive with Kent's team/program when they were struggling and many were so negative, or many just had no interest in the basketball forum/discussions. I wish you would go back to your old ways, because I respected your presence on this forum. Now I'm just frustrated to see this constant negativity from you.

Just hope we can get some high schoolers with upside . Not too concerned with who we beat or dont beat on the recruiting trail. The old Dick Bennet saying about learning to lose before learning to win may be the operative position right now . I do like the upside of 4 returnees including Moore and I think Robinson may be a decent point guard on this system if we can just find a frosh who can contribute at pg.
