Jon Wilner on football TV viewership, PAC-12 vs MWC:

Wilner writes some more

Nevada Sports NET compares fan support, new PAC-12 vs new MWC:

Who shows up to the games
Thanks Dave, good data. Wilner's analysis is a bit hard to follow but paints a picture. On the Nevada Sports article, some interesting numbers. NIU only averaged 10,272 for FB games? So why did the MW get them? BB numbers are pretty surprisingly high (to me anyway).

Interesting article and it highlights why the top MWC teams want to escape that conference. The bottom half of the MWC is an anchor for any conference and we are better off without them.
Yep. That's why in total attendance (FB+MBB), WSU is last in the Pac-X and 3 of those "bottom half' MW schools did better than WSU.

I know, the TV numbers are what counts. But just saying that more people come to their games than ours, despite our relatively large student sections.

Thanks, LoyalCoug. I had some problems following his analysis towards the end of the article myself. And his analysis was missing the viewership for the CBS broadcasted games, which doesn't help, either.

But, it's the best we have. I think I need to go read the article a second time.

Here's a new Canzano & Wilner Podcast. They start talking about the PAC-12 at the 19:35 mark. Canzano has started visiting all the new PAC-12 schools and gives a report on Boise State. Looks like Boise State is super excited about joining the PAC-12, which is great to see.

Couple of links below, including your Wilner mailbag that wasn't behind a paywall. Couple of thoughts:

1. It's nice that the only tangible news that us Pac-X people have to get our news from longtime former Coug JD Wicker instead of the Pac-X itself. I knew Wicker, great guy. He's done well.

2. Wilner? This guy is "an AP top-25 football and basketball voter as well as a Heisman Trophy voter"? Geezus.

His Pac/MW comments are such BS. Below:

To the best of our knowledge, there were no formal negotiations over a reverse merger.

Washington State and Oregon State considered that option for months and concluded it wasn’t right. Yes, they were less-than-thrilled with the Mountain West’s stance on the football scheduling agreement.

And in the interest of full transparency, we never quite understood the position, either. The moment the Cougars and Beavers reached a settlement with the departing Pac-12 schools and gained access to hundreds of millions of dollars, the Mountain West should have done everything possible to embrace its neighbor. Instead, it adopted a hardline position.

(Whether that was commissioner Gloria Nevarez’s decision or she was operating with specific instructions from the university presidents, we cannot say.)

But there were other challenges. For example, absorbing the entire Mountain West would have diluted the Pac-12’s media rights value. Also, it would have hindered the pursuit of College Football Playoff bids, with the least competitive schools hurting the best teams’ strength-of-schedule component.

What is with Canzano's eyeshadow?
LOL. Probably just bad lighting. Perhaps he needs to lower the lighting so that it is very close to the webcam.

Had lunch with the Oregon State buddies today. There were 6 of us. One, a retired guy in his 80's, just got back from his annual winter trip to Arizona. Said he talked to numerous UCLA and USC alumni there about conference realignment and none of them are happy about being in the Big-10. They figure that USC is destined to be a middle tier team in football and that UCLA will always finish at the bottom in that conference.

Oh, and attendance at home football games for UCLA are way down.

And to think they used to whine about having to visit Corvallis. I can't stop laughing.

By the way, small world about Loyal Coug knowing the San Diego State A.D. Guess the A.D. didn't make people happy with his comments as they were a bit of a leak about what's going on. I certainly appreciate his enthusiasm about SDSU joining the PAC-12.

Some movement on the lawsuits.........
