Alford gone

Alford has always lived a charmed life where circumstances gave him more accolades and achievements beyond what he really was. Now he has to deal with being a failure in an arena where the history and resources gave him every opportunity to be a huge success, Alford vastly under achieved where he wanted to really establish a legacy for himself as a coach.

When will schools learn these long-term, high-dollar contracts are, quite frankly, stupid?

The buyouts are ridiculous and in virtually every case, there's no correlation between compensation and performance. It's not like there aren't a plethora of coaches out there waiting for their chance. Simple supply/demand laws are ignored in college athletics.

The emperor has no clothes.

In 5+ years, Alford went to 4 NCAA tournaments and 3 Sweet Sixteens. He certainly was failing this year after some embarrassing losses, but a storied program like UCLA expects championships and more than Sweet Sixteens. At least UCLA has some expectations for its basketball program.

Glad Cougar

There is virtually no excuse for UCLA basketball to lose to Liberty at home. Having a 7'2 center like Moses Brown and losing to Liberty is virtually inexcusable. The players had given up and Alford had lost his team,

The only season Alford even came close to the potential of his talent was the Lonzo Ball team.

The scary thing is Kent could do as good or better than Alford at UCLA. Just an observation, not an expectation.

Steve Alford can coach circles around Ernie Kent! Alford wins consistently, Kent wins sporadically. Alford has had winning conference record everywhere except Iowa and he did a great jod at Iowa. Kent looses everywhere he goes expect for a few sporadic years. Never has Kent left a school with a winnining conference record.

When Alford was at New Mexico - I actually bought one of his tapes at one point while I was coaching. His motion stuff was pretty interesting and takes off from a lot of the stuff Bobby Knight used to use in his passing game offense. I never liked to run sets and preferred concepts and patterns instead. It gave the players a chance to make plays instead of memorize plays.

Never in a million years would I spend a dime on an Ernie Kent tape.

Alford is a horrible coach At UNM he just had more talent than the other teams. At UCLA he recruited very well well but could not coach his ass out of a barrels despite all the advantages of being UCLA.He is seen as an excellent recruiter but a piss poor coach despite all the accolades people wrongly bestowed on him UCLA fan s long lasting prayers were finally answered They are celebrating toastin and shooting off fireworks there.

If Alford is horrible then what is your evaluation of Ernie Kent? Worse record, worse recruiting, worse offense not much different on defense. Hell you blasted Ken Bone every step of the way but can you name one thing Kent has done better than Bone at WSU? This guy has turned our program into a joke.

Alford s life has been a gold platter affair. UCLA just served the golden boy his ass on a platter. if Alford was in Pullman you would want him run off on a rail or the tar and feather thing The difference between UCLA s resources and Pullman is laughable. New Mexico also has better resources than Pullman The program may still do a fair job in the PAC 12 . The cougs lost two games with Franks sidelined They also lost in the Tournament in very close games. NMSU is a very tough team They lost to Kansas by 3 points on the road. The cougs best inside man was been injured. Excuses yeah but this has been a strange year. So the cougs have been competitive and i expect them to be competitive in the PAC. Time will tell.I was counting on a victory over a Alford coached bruin team this tear but alford is unfortunately gone.

I can't think of a single thing myself. And all of that at 800,000 less a year.

So your argument that Alford was a horrible coach at New Mexico is “he just had more talent than the other teams”. I guess that’s why we disagree so often, because I thought recruiting better players and then using those players to win was kinda the point.
As far as having everything handed to him on a silver plater look at his coaching career. 4 years as head coach of d3 Manchester where he lost a d3 national championship to Bo Ryan. Then southwest Missouri state where he took them to the sweet sixteen, not just make the tourney but a sweet sixteen. Not sure what’s going on at UCLA this year but it has been embarrassing. That doesn’t however mean Alford hasn’t paid his dues and earned his coaching stripes.

Lol that’s funny but I think Alfords problems come from not knowing how to handle the big personalities/ egos of the 5 star type player. He has done better when his talent was more average/ blue collar type.

I think that's sometimes a tougher piece than people realize. It's a better problem to have than where we are on the other end of the talent pool but when you get it wrong it can cause a mess.
