My wife is looking for a new car and we just test drove the 2025 Model Y.
Say what you want, but the Supervised FSD is a game changer We drove ourselves on about a 5 mile city test drive in Bellevue. Turned on the FSD and it drove us back by itself, didn’t intervene once. It even parked itself.

Very comfortable, even for a big guy, 6-4 #230. Had plenty of room.

Any thoughts?

An Uber driver told me that he leased his because he thought there would be a technology breakthrough soon that would improve range and recharging time. No idea if that’s true or not but that’s what the man said.

I don't have one but a friend of mine bought a Model 3 Performance and he loves it. He's owned a couple Porsche SUV's and a couple other sports cars and he said that even if it's not perfect, the Tesla is an amazing value proposition and exactly what he wanted.

My daughter will say not to buy a Tesla because of the company owner but the truth is that one rebel....or even 10,000 rebels....isn't going to change a thing.

I've got a Model 3 performance. It's fantastic. Unbelievably fast off the line. If you frequently drive more than 250 miles/day, stopping to charge will get old, but if you're a commuter, you'll be hard pressed to find a better car under $70K. They depreciate quickly though. Research it thoroughly and make sure you intend on keeping it for many years. The used market is worth a look.

Yeah, most of the updates are done via computer download. The next big break through will be unsupervised FSD. Could roll out in Texas and California later this year

My brother owns a 2023 Y, and he's a huge Tesla guy.

I've driven it several times. Super fast. Like 0-10 in whatever.

I think the "Dog Mode" is cool. What a fantastic feature to have if you're a dog lover and it's summertime, and you need to run into the store.

My brother does have the FSD, (full self driving subscription). You say it's a game change, fine. I wasn't impressed. My brother would drive me around in FSD everywhere.....tying to sell Tesla on me. Again, not impressed. Sure, it's great technology...fine.

Here are my thoughts:

To me, it's not a head turner. Cosmetically, they do nothing for me. If you gave me one, I would sell it, although my wife likes them.
They are not attractive. As many of you know, we don't live in WA anymore, but I lived and sold real estate on the Island for many years. The Island is so saturated with Tesla's, mainly asian international owners.

It' like Costco or Big Box. Mass market cattle, millions of Teslas are on the Island and the Eastside. Yes, I've been to their showroom in Bellevue Square, and even have taken the test drives. I like the interior, it's fine. Outside is plain and ugly. Again, too many on the road.

Musk is a genius, and respect and honor for what he's done, and really impressed he created Starlink.

Tip: Don't ever be tempted to rent an electric car at the airport, and don't be tempted to take the "Manager's Special", when booking your rental car. You'll be sorry. The rental car companies can't even rent them, and if you do, it will be the last time you'll ever rent an electric car.

For renting, ICE is the way to go. You can fill up, or top off in fuel in 7 minutes and you're done. Long road trip, same thing. Never, ever rent an electric car on a long road trip. It will be the last time you'll ever do it. Brutal.

There's a lid for every pot. Tesla is not my thing. I honor that you like it, but, it comes down to cosmetics, (not a head turner), and they're too common. Everywhere on the eastide, thousands and thousands of them.

Really nice trim on the new performance edition AWD. By far the most popular is the base RWD Doesn’t do much for me either

Driving a Tesla lets Elon Musk hack into your thoughts. That’s the first step of replacing you with a more compliant clone, body snatchers style.

The cyber trucks are the ugliest, most ridiculous vehicles I’ve seen since maybe the amphicar.

If you own, drive and park a Tesla Cyber Truck, it screams....."look at me, I need attention". "I'm special".

Better and cheaper if you go to your Facebook Ego page and boast about your vacation photos, your business deal, and what you fed your dog last night. "Look at me, I'm important".

Seriously, some people need to use Facebook, (and I'm not talking about specialty clubs and groups like Die Hard Cougs), to feel important, because it's obviously a void in their life and they need to post daily their life story on Facebook in order to feel "I'm special".

Seriously. It screams that you need attention, and what's interesting is they can't see it. They look like ID's.

We're all different...and that's why they make Subaru's and Motorcycles.

Do I really care what you fed your dog last night? 🤣

But....as CJD would say, at 11:59pm at night, (at the end of the day).....I agree, the Cyber Truck is by far the ugliest and most ridiculous vehicle ever.

Screams..."I have money, and look at how important and special I am!"

I’m seeing more and more of those. I agree ugly AF. I drive a Rivian and it’s amazing.

Don’t own one but fair amount of experience driving a couple family members Teslas.. I will say this - interior styling/comfort leaves a lot to be desired especially on the lower end models. Stiff drives all. If you are driving over uneven terrain you will be in for a bumpy ride - especially with the 3 and Y models.

2024 model Y - spent a week driving family members vehicle last month as I was considering buying one. Super stiff suspension. Deal breaker for me but probably not for other people. Didn’t like riding in the back seat and really don’t like riding in the back of any Tesla model due to poor comfort and poor design/layout.

I’ve also heard and read of build quality issues and the Y and 3 being cheaply built. The Y handling is OK but for comparisons sake I have a 2012 BMW 535 as a summer car and the handling, comfort and ride are vastly superior to the Y model. IMO the Y is a big step down from the Tesla model I have a fair amount of drive time in:

2017 model x 100d - I’ve put a couple thousand miles on this over the years and love this car - great handling, decent drive and pretty comfortable. But not the back seats. Balls to the walls acceleration if you care but I don’t. Again, IMO the Y is a significant step down in quality from the X.

Even uglier than a Gremlin. And completely useless as a truck. It’s 100% an addadicktome purchase.

"addadicktome".....priceless! Thanks, Willie. I almost spit my coffee.

I will add that in LA, Teslas for what ever reason seem to have inoperative turn signals when changing lanes, they tend to cut people off, and they tend to tailgate worse than most. It is almost a meme here...Karen is rumored to be a Tesla driver.

I’m a terribly cynical person by nature and make fun of people that drive pickups when they have little need for them. Especially these days with the oversized and overpriced monstrosities we see on the roads. They quite effectively appeal to satisfying some men’s libidos and addressing their insecurities.

Why worry about others so much?

Who cares what people drive or if they drive?

Seems odd.

Uber, so long as they are courteous and properly practice the rules of the road, I agree.

Now, when it comes to putting a honking big pickup in a compact parking space, then I do some grumbling.

I will confess, my facebook use has doubled this year. I've posted twice in 2024, up from once in 2023.

None of them were pictures of the dog's food. Or mine. Or the dog.

My son’s new RST has that. Lots of EVs have that. He has rented Teslas and didn’t enjoy it. Didn’t like needing to go into the screen for everything.

Making fun of male insecurity doesn’t imply “worry”. Did I hit too close to home?

People with money do all sorts of crazy chit all the time.

Have you seen some of the accessorized/customized cyber trucks? They scream “look at me” for sure.

As in, “Look at me! I have so much ****ing money I can burn 🔥 it up on a hobby rig I drive on Saturday”

I couldn’t care less what people drive or why/how they spend their money.

Most people that drive cars that scream “look at me” dont actually have money. They have a second mortgage on their house if they own one or they are leasing it for more than they pay on rent.

That is so true.

Generally speaking, people with money don't flaunt it.

There are exceptions, as in 5%.

New acquired wealth (like a young professional athlete), or a couple of Sharks, like Robert Herjavec and Kevin O' Leary. Robert has his own YouTube channel now, and I was surprised....one of his videos actually reveals a lot of his extravagent possessions and wealth he has, including him driving in his new Rolls Royce, (or Bentley).

Most people with money....you litteraly can't tell by the car they drive. I said "car", not their primary residence.

But, for the most part, people with money don't flaunt it.

Those that do flaunt it risk what is happening to the NFL guys now (break ins while they are at road games), or worse. Waste not, Flaunt not.

For some people it is cultural whether you show it or flaunt it or not. My in laws live in the 90210 ( house bought many years ago when a upper middle class professional could afford to buy there). After the Shah was ousted many wealthy Persians began to move in and today they are 20% of the population. Houses with big columns ( a sign of status/wealth) and gates to keep out the rabble started going up. Next door neighbors have a Rolls parked for show in the front driveway for everyone to see. One son drives a Ferrari and another a Lamborghini ( both Ivy League educated BTW) and they have several other nice cars. They are clearly “old money” but their culture is all about flaunting wealth.

Also other people who generally appear modest may not really be that. Some people flaunt their wealth and status by the clothes they wear - a casual observer unfamiliar with high end designer brands may be clueless but they are not the intended audience for the show of wealth these people are signaling.

If your wife shops regularly at Nordstroms, Eileen Fisher, and Johnny Was, let's hope she better has zero balances on her cards, every single month.

Trophy girl or not.

"Oh, but it was on sale"!

"Oh, but I got it at The Rack"!

"But I actually got these HOKA's on eBay"

Not that kind of girl. That would be one of her sisters. When she does shop it’s mostly thrift stores ( for real), then REI and Columbia. If you met her you would have no idea as to where she grew up.

But to my point in the previous post the wealthy people I’m talking about would consider Nordstroms bourgeois.

I feel sorry for REI.

Another Amazon kill.
Proud to say that I almost NEVER buy anything from Amazon. On the rare occasion that I do, it is something small and not readily available in nearby stores. I also don't own a Costco card. Nothing really against them, just not interested. Winco is plenty cheap for food items. And beer. And TP, and I don't have to buy a 48 pack. :).

Winco is absolutely AMAZING.

Beyond AMAZING.

And ya know what's interesting? There are so many people who don't know about Winco.

The savings are downright extraordinary.

I miss the Cub Foods name, just because.
Is that really what it stands for? If so, I had no idea.

And M-I, no kidding. I know people who get their groceries at Fred Meyer, at times because one item is on sale at perhaps Winco prices. Ever shop there? Unbelievably expensive, but I guess the well-heeled whiteys in YakiVegas can avoid all those dirty Mexicans by shopping there. And yes I run into people that have never even heard of Winco, even though it is right next door to Costco.

I like how Winco posts the prices of other stores on its items, particularly produce. Safeway routinely clocks in at double the price. I might grab an item or 2 at Safeway occasionally just because it is close by and I have a club card, but my weekly stock up trip is to Winco. I buy 1 item and I've already paid for the $1 in extra gas it took to get there.

And there are 8 here in Arizona.

Of course, the closest to N. Scottsdale is 30 minutes away. Was there yesterday.

Biggest secret in all of Winco?

The farther meat case. The fresh meat case closest to the cheeses. Why?

For two weeks, a rotation of meats go on sale, and the sale is significant.

Top Round Roast for Pot Roast...$3.98 a pound. When it goes off sale.....it's like $7.50 a pound.

Interesting they don't promote this. Crazy savings.

Safeway
Albertson's
Fred Meyer
QFC
Sprouts
Fry's (not the defunked electronics)....but Fry's is Kroger, (just like Fred Meyer), and all over in Arizona.

All of the above are so expensive compared to Winco.

A $200 cart at one of the above stores, for the same items, would be $120 at Winco....easily.

All. Day. Long.

With no coupon gimmicks, or Advantage Card gimmicks.

I know so many people that refuse to drive the extra miles to save at Winco. But what's interesting....when they do drive, and go into the store, they're immediately blown away by the prices. Then they continue to go back to their Safeway, QFC, Fry's, Albertson's, Sprouts, and Fred Meyer. Why? It's more convenient and quicker to get to.

Winco is only found where the land is cheap. Employee owned, and zero advertising.

They operate in a lot more states now, but apparently back in 1999...

In 1999, Waremart changed its name to WinCo Foods. According to the company, the name WinCo stands for Winning Company; however, the company also notes (as a “fun fact”) that it also references the first five states in which the company had stores (Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and Oregon).

I learned about the "Winning Company" name today, always thought it was just the initial launch states.

They’re still doing OK because of their customer service and they’re a big enough retailer to manage. At least for now.

I feel far worse for the mom and pop places like Mountain Gear in Spokane who had to make a deal with the Bezos Devil for their online business then got squeezed to death and closed shop because Amazon increased their cut on sales.

This topic is a lot more fun! :)

On meat, I rarely eat beef for health reasons. Mostly chicken breasts, with the occasional lean-looking pork roast. Which I always check for at Winco. Sometimes those things are like $2.29/pound. Throw it in the crock pot, then pork tacos, pork sandwiches, big chunk of just pork. Lean as chicken. Yum.

I like "Winning Company". Nice contrast to most of this board, which I refer to as "whining company". See how I did that?

Edit - in keeping on topic, I'll start counting how many Teslas are in the Winco parking lot when I go there. Speaking of which, I've seen exactly one Cybertruck in town. Was laughing so hard and trying not to run off the road that I didn't catch what the driver looked like.

My wife shops at Winco. I’ve never liked the place. Feels cheap (not in a good way) and borderline dirty.

There are two in town now, one of them is in an area of routine violent crime. The other had a woman shot inside it a couple years ago by some loon who thought she was one of the aliens chasing him.

The wife doesn’t like when I shop because her Winco carts are much cheaper than mine. I really don’t much care what things cost, I buy what I need. I’ll wave off the impulse buys and discretionary stuff if it’s full price, but for staples and regular ingredients…I don’t even look at the price tag.

My store of choice is Yokes. I’m fully aware that prices are higher than other places, but I’m willing to pay a premium for a clean, quiet store, well-stocked with what I want, and not overrun with the people of Walmart. Never once have I found a soiled diaper or rotted produce on a Yokes shelf. I’ve seen both at Walmart more than once…and wouldn’t be that surprised to find them at Winco. Honestly, I’m such a grocery snob that even a lot of Safeway and Albertsons stores seem a bit low-rent to me (plus there’s the Boise State problem that keeps me away from Albertsons).

My near-universal complaint though - as a former longtime grocery employee (who including a stint at Dissmores) - the ability to properly bag groceries is a skill that is completely lost on the current generation. Kids today clearly missed out on model building, basic physics, or at least some Tetris, and have no ability to perform the slightest spatial organization.

You mean you don't like your bread, eggs, and tomatoes on the bottom of the bag?! You monster...

I worked as a CCK after graduation for a handful of months, and I loved the challenge of playing Tetris with each bag and placing the items correctly in bag (plastic versus paper was another fun game).

I understand your point. Agree. The caliber of clientele at Winco is totally different than the Trophy Women at Whole Paycheck, (I mean Whole Foods).

I too don't pay great attention to prices, but also don't want to just trow away money. Winco savings is probably over $300 a month vs. non-Winco stores. Of course there's Costco. Minimum $ 420 a cart just to walk in there, and that's zero impulse buying.

I like to buy smarter, I guess. But totally agree. Winco's clientele is totally different than Met Market or Whole Paycheck, and I don't like the environment ether, although the N. Phoenix store is about 7 years old, so not so bad....but the neighborhood is definitely not the Ritz-Carlton, or the Four Seasons.
