Appeal

It's looking more like Chun made up his mind early and, quite possibly, circumvented the defined process and protocol for the university as a whole.

Have heard unsubstantiated rumors to the same. UNSUBSTANTIATED. Got it?

Legal discovery. It's fan-tastic!
Chun's letter is evidence of that. Given that the process was new, wide, high volume, etc., it would not be surprising if there were, lets say, procedural errors.

No discovery yet. This is just the evidence that Rolovich and his lawyer actually have.

Best case for Rolo he gets his money, worse case he doesn’t. At this point it is about the money, nothing else will change .
And during discovery out will come some of the other reasons aside from the religious exemption and we will see in the future how that will affect his future employment endeavors.

If this is Leach, future employers may look past this, Rolo is a sub 500 coach.
He'll find a job, and I think he'll be a HC somewhere again.

Whatever flaws he has, he seemed to genuinely connect with the players.

Sorry I should write he isn’t coming close to coach at the level of the job he chose to leave… and lots of coaches connect with the players . But players don’t make the hire . Arrogant AD’s and arrogant Presidents do.

Well, I disagree. I handled public records requests for a state agency for nearly 30 years. FOIA is an acronym for Freedom of Information Act and is defined as "..a federal freedom of information law that requires the full or partial disclosure of previously unreleased information and documents controlled by the United States government upon request."

My interpretation doesn't change the point you are making at all.....it's just a cranky old man pet peeve of mine from many years dealing with public records. Now get off my lawn!

Glad Cougar
I get seduced by a hot government employee once every six months if I'm lucky and she always references them as FOIA requests.

Hot pillow talk.

I don’t know that “we will see” anything. Discovery is between the litigants. Not the litigants and the public. If they settle (probable) we may never know more than we do at this today.
The response time for the records requests should be nearing their deadlines. There is an exception for litigation, but with some documents already in the public record, more ought to be coming out.

Do you think that Hawaii or Nevada would hire him? Either as an assistant or HC? I do. Desperate ADs and Presidents make hires too.

Yes they do… he brings baggage and headaches and he is a 500 coach. Hawaii can’t find a 500 coach without the headaches ?

Maybe, maybe not. Norm Chow was 10-36. Rolovich got the program out of the gutter.

Exactly.

And the further obvious question remains if Rolovich had been performing his job with a mask, testing, social distancing, etc., why was accommodation no longer possible after October 18?

October 18th was important because that was the date when the decision to be vaccinated was a mandate rather than a suggestion. I think it's pretty obvious that Chun (or others?) felt that the optics of having the state's highest paid employee defying the mandate was worth the risk of firing. One thing that may be going on that hasn't been discussed much is that the decision to get rid of Rolovich may have come from as high as Inslee and that Chun didn't have a choice but to carry out the orders.

I read a quote recently that applies to Rolovich. In 1997, Lou Holtz was speaking to players at UConn and said the following:

"You don't have rights and privileges when you're part of a team," Lou Holtz said. "You have obligations and responsibilities and when you're out there and on the team, the people count on you. Don't be an impersonator. Don't impersonate a football player. You can't worry about yourself or what your rights or privileges are. Every decision you make academically, socially, football-wise affects every man on that team and you have to understand that."

Rolovich completely failed as a member of the WSU football program when it comes to the above quote. All BS aside, he completely disregarded his obligation to the team, the university and the people that depended on him. He put himself above all others and made the very public decision to show defiance to the mandate. Where this become relevant is that you can bet that he would destroy a football player who refused to follow the rules that he has established because they felt that they didn't apply to them or that they were arbitrary. Curfew? Whatever.....I play better when I stay out partying? Smoking pot? Helps a guy relax and focus! Academics? I'm about the TD's coach! Whether you agree with the mandate or not, life is full of arbitrary rules that were put in place because of their impacts on others. He has no right to tell his players that they should work hard for the team even when they feel it isn't fair. Because Rolovich became a hypocrite the minute that he decided to stand in defiance, I don't believe that he has the proper standing to represent the university.

I wouldn't call failure to obtain an exemption by August 29 insubordinate. The exact opposite- Chun imposing improper conditions on Rolovich's employment. This was a university-wide program, with multiple departments involved. Was EHS even in position to accept requests by that time? August 29 was about three weeks after the mandate was announced. The governor set the deadline for October 18. Chun was out of his lane, and obviously toothless since nothing happened until October 18.
WSU employees were originally supposed to declare their vaccination status by August 23 - including whether they had already or were going to apply for a medical or religious exemption (personal exemptions were no longer accepted after that date). They were also supposed to apply for those exemptions by Sept. 10, in order to allow time to review them with time to still get vaccinated ahead of the Oct. 18 deadline (most didn't meet the Sept. 10 date).

Aug 29 is slightly arbitrary. My guess is that Rolo missed the Aug 23 date and Chun told him to get it done.

Everything was toothless until 10/18 - it didn't become a mandate until then. But it was well publicized that this was a hard date. There were dozens of WSU employees who had applied late and their exemptions hadn't been reviewed by the 18th. They stayed home on the 19th.

Besides...mandate or not, if your boss told you to get something wrapped up by a certain date, and you didn't even start the process until a month later, that seems pretty insubordinate.

The one undeniable reality about the anti vaxers is that by continuing to take a stand, they keep COVID rates high, and at the top of the political news feeds; all but ensuring the GOP takes back Congress next year.

Coincidence? I think not. You’re going to see union strikes, lawsuits and rising unemployment throughout 2022. The last thing the GOP wants now is for COVID to wain and the economy get back to normal. It’s like a sick political payback for the BLM riots and the race rhetoric that was fanned by the Left in 2020.

Ain’t politics He’ll?

I’m not being sarcastic, and I’m not in favor of it. Anti vaxing has turned into a political rallying cry, similar to how the democrats encouraged rioting and violence associated with the BLM marches in 2020.

Nothing energizes your voter base like anger.

It's not anti vaccines. 99% of the country is vaccinated with or for something or other. It's forcing it down your throat and the ultimatum involved. It's the totally ignoring herd immunity. It's totally ignoring the benefits of ivermectin and zinc etc even though it has been proven to work and now they're copying ivermectin. That's not anti Vax that's anti BS.

I agree with your last sentence though.

You have clearly never hired anyone.
Likely the most nightmare scenario for any manager, combined with below average job performance.
Plus he comes with literally millions of dollars in bad publicity, over an issue that is indefensible, and will be simply comical in the future.
When I see one red flag, I'm done with the interview. This is a massive forest of red flags.
Hard pass by anyone with one brain cell.

I think he was trying to run out the clock n a manner of speaking. Not believing he would get fired mid season, he called WSU's bluff and lost

Um, no. The democrats never, ever "encouraged RIOTING AND VIOLENCE". Protests, yes. However, if you can provide a quote I will eat that crow. Oh, and by "democrats" I mean either party establishment folk or elected officials. Taihtsat

That's kind of my thinking too. Thing he forgot was that it wasn't WSU's bluff, it was Inslee's.
