Are most Spokane-area Zags also WSU football fans?

Judging by TV ratings and the crowds for their home games, Gonzaga has developed a sizable fan base for basketball.

For our Spokane posters here, do most of those GU alums as well as local Zag “t-shirt fans”in your area cheer and support the Cougs during football season?

Seems like that’s something that could work into WSU’s favor if/when the Big 12 starts looking at both schools as possible future members.

I know Chun would have every base covered if he talks to Big 12 officials.

Pete’s a troll.

Ever notice his flame attempts on here?

Pretty sad really. Get a life & go back to UW’s board.

The ones I know are more likely to go to Eastern games. Spokane is weird. Too soon or did Cooper Kupp just score again?

Half of them or more of the grads and fans are from Western Washington, so they are mostly Husky Fans. I remember a few years back a Gonzaga fan said to me "well we beat you in football again this year". I reminded him that his school didn't have a football team. Needless to say he was a Husky fan. It's one of the many reasons I don't root for Gonzaga.

GU fans are far and wide in the Inland NW and now nationally I believe. GU fans don’t necessarily pull for the Cougs, except in football. As a Spokanite I’m fully behind the Cougs in all sports and when they meet head to head, it’s 100 percent Cougs. But I do like the style of basketball that GU provides and they are fun to watch and the hoops is high quality. Plus, they always now beat that other school in Seattle, which I enjoy. WSU will always be at a disadvantage due to its fan base living somewhere else besides in Pullman. It just makes going there & the school more unique. Go Cougs!

GU alums don't root for WSU, but WSU alums love to root for GU. Its incredibly stupid.
F F'ing Gonzaga. I hate those pious fake religious assholes.

I was at Beasley the night we beat them for the second straight time. The place was packed. And this little Gonzaga punk was on the concourse screaming profanities at the crowd. I got out of my seat and was going down to punch the little M-F'er. Luckily security go there first and threw him out.

A basketball team with a second rate university attached.

I’m a Coug through and through. I’ve lived in Spokane since I graduated WSU. Spokane’s crazy about the Zags and it actually makes for a lot of fun times when they’re doing well. One of their former assistants was a Coug (now at Boise State). When the two teams play each other, I’m true to the crimson and gray.

Although I personally can’t stomach organized religion, I’ve never understood the hate. They’re not our rivals.

"we don't play bottom feeders" - Mark Few on ending WSU games. Except the entire WCC outside of St. Mary's.

No, they do not. Spokanedalor is a strange place. Biggest bandwagoner fans I have ever seen. It's always funny to see the old decal outline on a car window of who the driver was rooting for while they were winning.

Bottom feeders... lol

I think one issue that WSU fans have with Gonzaga is they seem to have resorted to the same big-timing that UW has been guilty of with respect to WSU hoops. That said I have lots of friends who root for the Zags, Cougs and non Cougs alike, so I pull for them more often than not for that alone. But I get some of the irritation with them, I find some of the arrogance around the program to be similar to when Oregon was all of a sudden massively successful at FB after years of being irrelevant. Like their fan base didn’t know how to deal with that success gracefully, they just went from lovable losers to douchebags overnight.

I know this won’t be popular to a lot of you but I would hope gu is being considered by the PAC as a basketball only (and other non-revune) diminished revenue share member.

No it wouldn’t be the best thing for WSU outside 1 guaranteed sellout per year in bball but it could be good for the PAC, especially considering they are in survival mode. Arizona is intersted in the Big12 for BB. An addition of gu and SDSU would make the PAC an excellent basketball conference, arguably better than they were prior to LA schools leaving which could stabile the 4 corners. A SR review article this weekend said their Basketball brand was the 5th best in the nation for TV ratings.

I’m also still hopeful UCLA comes back. 11 football members is no big deal to play that schedule for 5 years or so.

For the record - I grew up in spokane and went to MANY zag games in the 70s and 80s along with about 500 other fans. I was a big fan when they were overachieving blue collar ballers making consistent runs until about 2007 ish when they became overrated and unbearable. Dropping WSU really pissed me off and I even told that too Few (good story over beers). The last 4-5 years I’ve come to respect them but not really like them. They run a mostly clean program with what for the most part is really good kids. And if you live in Spokane and you’re not on a fixed income they have had a HUGE economic impact on the area which has benefited most.

My dislike of Gonzaga goes back to the early 90's before they were good in basketball. They were one of the teams that we faced off against in a design competition that including some race events. Holier than thou attitude and they cheated in their first race. Once they were forced to compete the same as everyone else....they finished in last place.

It doesn't matter if we are rivals or not. We are in direct competition with them for attention and fan dollars. Our alumni choosing to spend their time, money, and effort to watch another school is a massive problem.

F Gonzaga. And somebody help me here on the Mark Few quote about WSU. "We don't play bottom feeders". I know he said it, but can't find in on the web. Somebody else has to remember that.

I barely knew Gonzaga existed before moving to CDA in 2012. As a longtime resident of King County, I was very familiar with the crappy treatment the Cougars received from the local media. As I lived here longer and longer it became obvious that the Spokesman Review treated the Cougars worse than the Seattle media did. They have their heads so far up Gonzaga's ass that it would take the jaws of life to get them out. It had gotten to the point that I was expecting the SR to do in depth coverage of which GU reserve had the most farts after eating three bean burritos at Taco Bell. It truly was ridiculous, disgusting. Then they jacked subscription prices way up and cancelled Saturday editions, thus doing away with the days I most wanted the paper-Game Day for Cougar football. Oh, sure, I could access stuff online on Saturday, but I prefer the actual paper for that, so they will have to carry on their failing business model without me now. Subscription cancelled!

Newspapers were never a truly successful business model. For years Their profit relied on their ability to steal money from the kids who did their deliveries. They started to fail as deliveries moved to mail, to larger routes/fewer carriers, more adults, and then further as things moved to the web.

Screw them all.

The "local" paper in Wichita moved it's publishing operation to Kansas City many years ago. It meant that anything that happened after 4 pm wouldn't show up until two days later. The epitome of yesterday's news today. I think they still print the newspaper but I don't know anyone who subscribes to it.

I think I recall reading that quote somewhere on Brand Y, but it may have only been referenced in the comments section ...

Not sure what would've motivated CMF to make that sort of comment — even if it was supposedly off the record

Because he is an arrogant prick - with bad teeth and frankly kind of ugly. Although to be fair, very few can match the prettiness of the Loyal one. :)

When I was carrying papers (for the Spokesman, actually) I dreaded Sundays and Wednesdays. Sunday papers were huge with all the weekly inserts, and there were more subscribers on Sunday. The bag I carried weighed as much as I did. Wednesdays weren’t quite as big, but had all the ads. Loved Mondays. They were so thin, I could fit them all in my backpack.

Today, the Sunday paper - if there even is one - isn’t much more than a regular Tuesday or Thursday edition used to be. Mondays are just a few pages. There’s no point in trying to read a paper over your breakfast, because there’s not enough content to last through your first cup of coffee. Besides, anything in the paper is at minimum 12 hours old. More likely at least a day. If it’s worth knowing, I saw it on the internet yesterday.

Yeah the local YakiVegas Herald reduced their print version down to I think 3-4 days a week from 7. I subscribe to the online version.

I think at one time a high % of the last 8-10 presidents had delivered the local newspaper as a kid so you’ve got that going for you.

95Coug in 2024 for President! You’ve got my vote over Biden or Trump.

Loyal, is ol' Jim Scoggins still the sports boss for the Herald Republic?

He was kind of the John Blanchette for the Yakima Valley as far as notoriety and longetivity

Still trying to figure out how to announce my candidacy.

As for a platform, forget social security & abortion. My cornerstone will be that a penny from every tax dollar goes to the WSU NIL fund. And Two pennies from every dollar collected from duck or husky fans.

If I ran I’d campaign on getting the Monday after Super Bowl a Holiday or move the damn game to Saturday.
