Article: As Final Four looms, schools are scrambling to spend money on players: 'Everybody is playing beat the clock'

At some point, the interest in the sport is going to be significantly less. It's the parity of the sport that makes it fun to watch. The NFL learned this years ago.
Couldn't agree more. You could have convinced a lot of people that article was parody if it was published as a "projected future" piece even 10-20 years ago, by the way.

Wichita State made a public request for an additional million dollars in NIL donations last week.
There is an interesting parallel between what's happening in college sports and the government.

"GIVE US MORE, YOU'LL GET LESS! GIVE US MORE, YOU'LL GET LESS!"

Does Wichita State really think $1MM is going to move the needle for them? As long as they system is allowed to continue as it is, there will always be another school willing to offer more NIL money.

"additional" one million. I don't know how much they have....but they want a million more than they already have. BTW, this is for basketball only, so not as many mouths to feed.

Yeah, I kinda assumed all of that.

Quick research says that the collective grew 500% since its inception, which would be about $1.25MM. I'm not sure what the school is actually contributing, but lets say another $1MM, then asking for another $1MM. That's a lot of money, right?

Not enough.

"So far the WSU men’s basketball team has seen its top two eligible returners, Quincy Ballard and Corey Washington, hit the transfer portal where both are receiving power-conference interest with expected 7-figure pay days coming, sources told The Eagle.

College athletics needs strong mid-majors like WSU to lead the charge in quitting the NCAA structure and making their own thing. They'll never compete and the minute they do become competitive one or all of the "power-conference" schools will come and snipe their players and coaches. Its simply unsustainable.

The only thing I'll even consider giving donation money to for college athletics is for scholarships. Miss me with ever donating to a collective.

With how college athletics is going, I'd rather just go watch a pro league or not give a shi*t at all.

That's easy to say....but not paying players at all is accepting that they never have a shot at keeping any decent player....let alone good ones. Wichita State has the fanbase to support a robust NIL if they believe....something that's been gone since they fired Gregg Marshall for being an insane lunatic. Still, when the Shockers have been good, they consistently filled their roughly 10,000 seat arena.

According to collegeraptor.com, Wichita State had $12 million in revenue this past year. Washington State had about $8 million. The Shockers have no desire to be considered second tier in basketball.

That's not really their choice any more. The "power-conferences" are calling all the shots, and if you're not ordained then you are - Wichita State.
