Invited to walk-on by the staff. They can only have a total of 105 guys on the roster for fall camp. Then when school starts (I believe that’s the date) anyone can try out, and the 105 limit is lifted.
Preferred walk- on's have a guarantee from coaches that they will become part of the team (at least for that year). All other's walking on are only "trying out" for the team, with no guarantee they will become part of the team.
Back when teams could have a virtually unlimited number of non-scholarship players on the team, some teams (Nebraska during the Osborn era comes to mind) were famous for the number of non-scholarship walk-on's of good quality that were willing to be part of the team for their entire college career even without a scholarship.
This was a huge advantage for these top tier teams. This unfair advantage is partially why limits on numbers of both scholarships and non-scholarships players were lowered, spreading the talent around makes for more competitive football (and a better product for television).

That's an important benefit (assuming the weight room as well) especially for the linemen.
I "think" the PWOs need to purchase a standard meal plan - but the food in the Opns Bldg is out of this world and plentiful.
Definitely they have access to the S&C coaches and weight room.
Don’t think so, unless it’s changed. There’s no difference between a preferred walk on and a walk on other than you are on the team vs trying out. No money, no training table (it’s coming off of your own dining card).
No training table? They don't have access to sports trainers and physical therapists if they get injured?
